From the article:

"Shannon went 5-7 in his first season, then 7-6, then 9-4 last year. He never won a bowl game, and never got the Hurricanes past second place in the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division. Miami still has not won an ACC championship since leaving the Big East, and hasn't been part of the Bowl Championship Series since the 2003 season."

In todays environment, that is a huge indictment.

For all the talent he was able to bring in there, I think they did underachieve the past two seasons. But as always it's not all on him. The situation with all the QBs leaving hurt them. Having almost no choice but to stick with Jacory "The INT Machine" Harris helped seal his fate.

Maybe they can do the Terps a huge favor and hire James Franklin. :laughlol:

LOL... Somehow, I don't think they have James on the shortlist.

Stay away from Malzahn. You can't have him.

And the next head coach will be Jon Gruden maybe?

Looks like the 20 Miami fans in the whole world are excited! Maybe they can finally fill up 25% of their stadium!

We're talking about the Canes not the Heat or Marlins.

It will be interesting to see what happens next for Miami in terms of managing wins and conduct. If Shannon did something right, it's that he began cleaning up the conduct of the team and the public perception of the Hurricanes program. Than again, when you're not winning you're easier to ignore, but all in all, Shannon did what he was asked to, and needed to do. But that wasn't good enough, and it will be interesting to see what comes next given this.

If Harris didn't throw that interception, he would probably still be coach.

Just like Bob Davie at ND.

Butch Davis is credited for cleaning up the program's reputation starting in the probation years of the mid 90's. You are way off on this.

Huge rumors swirling re: Gruden to the U. I'll believe it when I see it.

I'm referring to the end of the Larry Coker tenure at Miami, which included the brawl in the Orange Bowl with Florida International, off the field issues, and lest we forget the infamous "No Guns Policy." Butch Davis did a great deal when he was head coach, without question. But by the time Shannon came in the program was back in the headlines for all of the wrong reasons.

Miami has a tough road back IMO. In the hay day the U, FSU, and UF were splitting up the biggest talent pool in the country and all three were loaded. UM took a ton of players from Miami Central, da west, killian, glades and the like. These guys had a very hard edge to them and that helped win a ton of games. Now every big time program in the country is in on this talent pool and the clean it up coach is not the type that is going to get some of these guys that don't have the greatest backgrounds. This on top of not having the greatest environment as far as it being a very small school and not the greatest facilities situation make it not an easy place anymore.

You were spot on up until this.

Looks alright to me. It's not Oregon by any means, but what really is?

Regardless, Miami won all those championships with facilities that looked like something out of a 70's blaxploitation film.

First, you forgot this:

That's like Maryland playing at a stadium on the UMBC campus.

Second, back then no one had "facilities". You had a practice field and a locker room/weight room.

I stand by what I said and apparently even the U knows it with the building program. You do understand that the student section at Comcast and the entire undergraduate student body at the U are about the same size. This does not lend itself to a lot of student excitement on campus. The stadium situation is the same story.

BTW the two pictures you provide, even knowing they are not all inclusive, show facilities that are on par with the top high school programs in the state of Florida. You have to remember there are high schools with Jumbotrons and what not in the state.

I forgot nothing. Miami has never had a stadium close to campus.

LOL. Loves seeing his name in (on) print. Clown.

I'm a fan of Leach and would like the hire. Don't see it happening.

Flosman: Yes, the small enrollment at UM makes it more difficult to fill out huge sections of a stadium with students like the state schools, but that doesn't affect student excitement on and around campus. I was there from 2000-2004. Campus was nuts, and the Orange Bowl was nuts. Unfortunately, South Florida is a fairweather fanbase. I can't help it, and neither can other alums and students. There's not enough of us to make up the difference. Put a winner on the field, and the environment is electric.

That's what makes this coaching hire so huge. We've been dealing with nothing but incompetence from the coaching staff since Butch left. Coker was a joke, Mike Tyson could have coached the '01 and '02 teams to the MNC. Bring in the right coach, and UM will be a force again.
