Brooks Robinson hospitalized; releases statement
Orioles Hall of Famer Brooks Robinson, 73, was hospitalized today and released a statement a few moments ago saying he was doing fine.
Here's the statement:
"Thank you for your outpouring of concern. I was originally scheduled for a routine outpatient procedure at Greater Baltimore Medical Center on Thursday, March 31, 2011. The evening before surgery, I developed a fever and infection. My doctors chose to admit me to aggressively treat the infection and I am responding well to antibiotics.
"I am pleased to say that I continue to remain cancer free after my successful treatment for prostate cancer in 2009. I ask that you give me privacy. I look forward to a full recovery and thank you for your prayers."

Thoughts and prayers Brooks!
When I first saw the thread, I was a bit apprehensive, Number Five is the first of many O's heroes from my first days of fandom.

The last few years have been quite a health challenge for Five. I truly appreciated that he has put any issues with the organization behind. I hope that we get to enjoy this wonderful human being for years to come.

From a SUN update (http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/orioles/bal-brooks-robinson-update-0401,0,2750520.story):
GBMC said in a separate news release Friday that it had received many phone calls and emails [about Brooks] from concerned people in Baltimore and across the region. The hospital has set up an email account, getwell@gbmc.org, where fans can send thoughts and well-wishes to be forwarded to the Robinson family.

I have not heard otherwise, so I assume that Five is still in the hospital recovering.

Hello OriolesHangout,
Thank you for sending a get well e-mail to Brooks Robinson. Fans of Mr. Robinson continue to share their memories and good wishes for the Baltimore Orioles legend as the Hall of Fame baseball player recuperates at GBMC. Since Friday, April 1 at 12 noon, more than 460 people have emailed getwell@gbmc.org – and each e-mail has been shared with Robinson. One binder was delivered to Mr. Robinson on Friday. Another binder was delivered to Mr. Robinson today.
Messages have been received from at least 21 states, including California, New Mexico, and Washington, and one fan – a Baltimore native now living in Australia - sent an e-mail from his iPhone. Messages have come from a brain cancer survivor who invited Brooks to a lunch where they could talk baseball, several patients undergoing cancer treatments for whom Brooks is an inspiration, and fellow prostate cancer survivors. One well-wisher invited Brooks to attend the Orioles June 3 game with her – “I have an extra ticket,” she said, and another with front-row tickets by the Orioles dugout invited Brooks to be his guest.
Dozens of messages have come from people who played ball alongside Robinson at Orioles Fantasy Camp, others who've met Brooks and had their photographs taken with him at festivals and community events, and from fans who shared stories about their autographed Brooks Robinson memorabilia that has been passed down to another generation. A husband and wife who wore their #5 Brooks Robinson jerseys to Opening Day vs the Rays in St. Petersburg last week shared well-wishes, as did the man who coached Brooks' two sons in Little League baseball! One fan even sent along a PDF copy of his typewritten research report from his 1971 high school English class titled simply, “Brooks Robinson.” (The student received an A).
Thanks again for sending a get well message.

P.S. We compiled a list of highlighted e-mails below. Please take a look when you get a chance. The messages are all very touching and inspiring.
At a time when heroes are hard to find, I’m proud to say you’ve been mine for about 40 years.
I am a 60 year old professional woman who remains dignified until someone mentions the Orioles---out comes an enthusiastic, sentimental fan! I can give you the starting line-up of the Birds for the first 40 years of my life. My fondest memories are of the early days when you played third and turned those not-to-be-believed double plays. The Orioles personified role models and you led by quiet example. All parents wanted their little boys to grow up to be just like Brooks Robinson.
You were an amazing ballplayer, but even more importantly, you are an excellent role model and a great man.
You are one of the best baseball players that ever was or ever will be. More impressive, is your humility, character and good will towards other people, we need more people like you Brooks.
You have been my favorite Oriole since I was a little girl and were my dad’s pride when he spoke of the Orioles. You are an inspiration to all athletes and should they give half as much as you, they will be a good person.
Get Well Brooks! Miss you and the 33rd Street House of Thrills!
Please know that the thoughts and prayers of all Orioles fans and baseball fans everywhere are with you. And we know you're in good hands at GBMC.
Your consistent excellence in the field taught this young guy to approach that standard the best he could, no matter what he did. You, consequently, will always be part of my life.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery. I can't begin to tell you all the thrills you provided while watching Orioles Baseball. You make us all proud that we have such a fine gentleman and baseball icon here in our hometown.
You were a little girl's hero back in her Junior Oriole days, & you're a wonderful role model to all. Speedy Recovery, lucky number 5!
You've continued to inspire and to remind us that not so very long ago, there truly were sports heroes: people young children like my son could idolize while parents like me could feel confident that my son's hero was the kind of man who would never disappoint him.
Nobody ever did it better than you. You inspired my love of baseball and the Orioles. You are a true gentleman and a class act. I wish you a speedy recovery.
I first saw you when I was in elementary school, many decades ago. I learned arithmetic by calculating all of your impressive stats. And even now, at the age of 59 and still playing in an adult hardball league, I proudly wear #5.

Very touching. Thanks for posting.
Unfortunately, the longer your stay in a hospital, the greater your chances are of picking up some nasty germs, too many to name.
I certainly hope he is responding to treatment(s).
I didn't realize that Brooks was still in the hospital. I'm very concerned by this, as we all are.
Get well soon #5.
