Harmon Killebrew, 73, 11th on the All-Time HR list may have only a short time left. He entered hospice care last night and all but conceded his battle with Esphogal cancer, a horrific form of cancer.
I just want to say, that along with Brooks, Harmon Killebrew is the nicest man Ive ever been around in baseball.
And he was the REAL deal when it came to HR's. He probably deserves a top 5 or 6 HR ranking with so many players on the juice.
We should honor these great players in public while we have the chance.
Time is running out.

Interestingly enough, one of my coworkers (who used to work card shows with her ex) met Killebrew once and said he acted like kinda a jerk. Must've been having a bad day. I guess autograph hounds can do that to you. ;)
Regardless, this is very sad news. Best of luck to you, slugger!!!

I met him once in a similar setting, except that it was All Star fanfest and not a paid autograph show. He was incredibly nice, one of the nicest people I have ever met.
I went to plenty of autograph shows when I was a kid and they honestly are just not very pleasant for anyone involved, and I saw several "nice guy" players in not very good moods.

Very sad news to hear we'll soon be losing another great ball player. It's going to be a say day for all of baseball.

I agree Roy, he was very personable the times that I have spent with him.
I haven't spent anytime with him, but he was always one of my favorites, when one of my uncles gave me a few Topps 65' baseball cards and he was one of the few "stars" left in his collection. Man, I loved spending hours flipping his card over and studying those same few years of stats....over and over...

I remember watching him play. As a kid then, I didn't root for the "other guys" even when they weren't playing the Orioles. But, I remember watching a "Game of the Week" and finding myself rooting for Killebrew.

Anybody with the mlb.com package should go check out the Killebrew tributes there including speeches from his funeral. Some great stuff there about a great person.

Probably a dumb question....but, does MLB ban players from using chew during games? I suspect not, I've seen Nick Markakis with what appears to be a large wad in his mouth. If not, they should.

They do in the minors. There's talk of trying to eliminate it at the ML level, but it isn't banned yet.
