He should be put on DL and even consider the surgery. This again has the Orioles in a weak position going into the last six weeks before the break. Now is the time to commit to Nolan and Felix, with Lee on 1B. Let's move on.

I think we have seen the best of Luke already. If he has the surgery this year he probably wont be real ready next season. It would be 2013 before he could be expected to be back to normal. And by then he will be pretty old.
This could be it.

should have traded him in the offseason, his value was never higher.

The O's are never proactive. It's easy to say shoulda woulda coulda, but I said this as have hundreds of others.. No one thought this team was going to win the AL East, Once Lee was signed, along with Vlad, it should have been clearance time for Luke. MacPhail drags things out. Net result, three left fielders, Scott being #3, and two DH's, Scott being #2. Not good. Swing and a miss for the FO. And we wonder why there is this pattern of losing.

So, what...you trade Luke Scott and hope Felix Pie doesn't get injured? And hope Pie is consistent enough through an entire season? Nolan Reimold stunk it up all of last season both in the majors and in the minors. He was not a viable option.

Well both of them are better than what Luke is giving us right now. He's taking up space at this point. Hindsight is 20/20 but a lot of people were in favor of trading Scott this past off-season.

That is just a negative nelly attitude. Bottom line, Scott became expendable the moment Vlad and Lee were signed. Period. Oh, unless you prefer to have Multiple one demensional players, who won't be here when and if this team ever smells .500 in a full year.

Well both of them are better than what Luke is giving us right now. He's taking up space at this point. Hindsight is 20/20 but a lot of people were in favor of trading Scott this past off-season.
But that's the problem. Prior to this season (and up until a fews ago, really):
2008: 807 OPS, 111 OPS+
2009: 828 OPS, 114 OPS+
2010: 902 OPS, 142 OPS+
In April/March this year he had an 806 OPS.
You don't trade Luke unless you get a solid return for him. Now, everyone is going to claim some sort of higher intelligence on this, but none of us know if/what/if any was offered for Luke Scott in the off-season. And if it isn't a solid piece, why should we do it when:
1. Felix Pie has been an injury liability and was inconsistent last year
2. Nolan Reimold was absolutely terrible last year both in the majors and the minors, and his defense in LF is incredibly subpar
I don't think it was out of the realm of possibility for Luke to sport an 825 OPS this year, possibly even more. He's traditionally a slow starter in April/March and really comes on in May/June.
So, people can claim until the cow's come home that they wanted Luke Scott traded prior to the season, but until we know what was dangled (if any), then these people are just speaking out of their you know what.

Lee can't play LF.
Vlad can't play LF.
Luke is a LF, not a 1B. Not a "RF".

The problem with trading Scott over the winter was his value wasn't that great in spite of his numbers. His age, the fact that he was a DH most odf the past 2 years, and his arbitration cost, made him less attractive to other clubs. Assumming he was healthy he was more valuable to us as a LF.

And Luke isn't much of a LFer anymore either. I don't claim that I wanted Luke gone this past off-season but if he were traded it wouldn't have bothered me much at all, especially considering AM's pretty good track record with trades.

I don't know, that's not my decision and it's not my area of expertise. Luckily I trust AM to make trades the benefit the team.

I'm sorry, but this statement contains far too much humility for the Orioles Hangout site. I'm kidding. Great post, great contribution, great attitude. :)

That comment is hilarious. Luke is far from a LF. He makes Benny Alyala look like Roberto Clemente

And you suggesting Nolan Reimold is even more hilarious, since he makes Pat Burrell look like Carl Crawford. Nice try.
As for some evidence, per FanGraphs:
2007 - 3.1 fielding value
2008 - 5.6 fielding value
2009 - -1.5 fielding value
2010 - -1.5 fielding value
2011 - -0.9 fielding value
His UZR over the last few years has been a bit under average. He's not great and not that good, but certainly not beyond awful.

When a good but not great player like Scott has a career high .902 OPS season at age 32, that to me is the definition of "sell high".
But yet again we hold onto players a year too long instead of trading them a year too soon.
Just another day in Birdland.

You can't demand analysis in one thread and bash it in another. That's hypocritical. It makes it look like you only want to see the facts that support your belief instead of ALL the facts.

Maybe....just maybe Luke has been going through one of those slumps that he frequently goes through and we should take his word that the shoulder really doesn't affect his swing. Did anyone consider this? This is a guy that lead us in OPS the last two years and good power bats are harder to find than ever right now in MLB. All this talk about forcing him to get surgery and end his season, why don't we just see this play out and remember what type of player Luke is and what he can do for us when he is healthy. That swing on the ball he sent to Eutaw St. looked pretty good to me.

I predict Luke leads us in OPS again by the end of season. Driving the ball in the gap against a Lefty shows that he is locked in again. It only takes one game for Luke to get going. And when he is going he is our best power threat. We need to look at sitting Lee, Guerrero, and Markakis (while he is slumping) at least once a week or so a piece so that we can have Reimold and Luke both getting regular at bats.

Trade Luke, don't trade him. DL him don't DL him. Bench him, don't bench him. I don't know. I do know one thing. His barber should be given his outright release, NOW.
