When Guthrie said "the pain worsened with each pitch in the fifth", it sounds like a trip to the DL. Even if its a precaution, Guthrie is likely to miss a start or two or three.
Who replaces him? Bergesen has done well in his time at AAA. 2-1, 1.64 ERA, 1.00 WHIP in 3 starts. He threw a complete game and went 7 innings in his last outing.
I would say welcome back to Brad.
The next question is how will Matusz do in his next start?

If only he could get people out at the ML level. We don't really have a better option, so I guess he gets the nod by default.

Bergy has shown he can get major league hitters out in 2009 and the second half of 2010. I think he lost confidence in his sinker. I haven't heard how much he used it at AAA but that is a key to him coming back to the O's and finishing the year strong.

I don't think he lost confidence in his sinker, I think he lost his sinker. Hopefully, he can get it back.

Roch is reporting the Viola will be recalled to replace Guthrie (if he goes on the DL). Viola to the pen. It will be interest to see who starts on Tuesday. Berken? or does Bergy get recalled? I would think the Rapada is a little nervous at the moment.

I think this is a no brainer.

He lost confidence in it because the other team kept hitting it over the fence.

After his great relief appearance the other day, I hesitate to want to bring him out of the pen. However, I'm also interested in seeing his ability of starting in the major leagues now that he has more experience at the big league level.

We only need a 5th starter once until the beginning of July. If Guthrie's back puts him on the DL and its not a bad injury, he may only miss one start He would be eligible to come off the DL on July 1, so he could start there.

This rotation needs a pitcher who can barely hit 90, and when he does it goes 400 feet the other direction.
Many times he can not control his stuff and hee barely can strike anyone out.
His ceiling is a right handed specialist.
A junk baller.

Why would Rapada be nervous? That homer he gave up was the first earned run he's allowed to a left handed batter all year and it only jumped his OPS to a measly .384.

Rapada value is very tied to getting lefties out. He has allow 9 earned runs in 10.1 inning. And that does not count the inherited runner that was on first when the homer was hit. He has a 1.55 WHIP. If Buck finds a lefthanded pitcher that can get lefties and righties out then I think Rapada is history.

So, the injury doesn't appear to be all that serious.
The Orioles could call up Bergy to make the start and send down a guy like Rapada, who is a one trick pony.
Then, since you don't need a 5th starter for a while, Bergy could act as a long man.
May not even be any need to put Guthrie on the DL..Just skip a start.
BTW, you don't have to call up Bergy but rather see him get the start than Berken.
