As predicted (it didn't take a genius), the Redskins have released kicker Shayne Graham (http://www.redskins.com/news-and-events/article-1/Redskins-Release-Graham/e9238419-c8ee-4f7a-ab27-929220ec90db), following his awful performance during Friday night's preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The worst is reading the Insider on the Post.com and seeing all the idiots upset about this move, talking about how he's the 3rd most accurate kicker in NFL history. OK, let's for a minute pretend that he doesn't have the leg strength of a 6 year old girl, and say if since he can't make anything over 40 yards he should be the most accurate kicker ever since his coaches know not to kick there. Then, let's pretend that he doesn't get rattled very easy and miss clutch kicks all the time (cause the Bengals hardly ever got in situations where it mattered). Now we can pretend that he wasn't missing every kick in practice all week last week, and went on to miss a gimme 29 yarder AND another kick for good measure later in the game in the preseason. Ok, yeah ignoring ALL OF THAT maybe it was too soon.

Oh wait, all that really happened? Then yeah maybe it's a better idea to get rid of him now and get Gano his reps to get ready for the season. The new rules favor strong legged kickers anyway, and Gano might have the 2nd or 3rd strongest leg in the NFL, the accuracy will improve with experience. Remember we cut Akers his rookie year because we were too impatient to let him kick through the learning curve.

Truth. I was hoping Shayne Graham would come through for us. He did the absolute complete opposite and deserved to be cut. On to the next.

I really like Gano actually. With most kickers you have to get through a rough year or two early, but the Skins have been a revolving door there and haven't been letting anyone develop into a long term answer.

I agree. I have supported Gano for the same reasons you stated above; however, I'm not completely sold. If Shayne Graham returned to his pinnacle form, then I'd take him over Gano. As it stands, I'm happy and encouraged by Gano's performance. Cheers on hoping it's another step on living up to his potential. HTTR!

One of the reasons the position has been a revolving door (besides often not landing the best talent) is the 'Skins perennial red zone inefficiency coupled with their general touchdown scoring deficiency. Thus, there is more of a pressure to have super-accurate, super-strong kickers who can't work through that learning curve because the team needs the points so badly. I hope Gano works out his accuracy soon, and the offense improves a little more in general to buy him time.
