View Full Version : Vladdy is hot.
He's been pretty disappointing for the year, but Vladdy right now and Derrek Lee right now are both looking like more than we hoped for at the start of the season. It's a shame they weren't playing anything like this earlier in the season.
Well, here's Vlad's stats over these last 12 games.
OBP = .435
SLG = .711
OPS = 1.146

Vlad is still a joy to watch. He's a pure professional hitter, always has been. It's sad he couldn't produce very much for us. He will probably go on to sign with another team for next year and have a productive season. Oh well, at least we got to watch him.

Vlad was a joy to watch. This season he's just been a sad reminder that even the most brilliant MLB careers have to end eventually.

Typical season for a veteran O's signee.

I am glad he is showing us a little glimpse of his former self, right at the end. Too little too late, but still fun to watch when he has it going on.

I hear Anna Nicole Smith looked really good right before the end too.

Wish he had shown a glimpse before either of the trade deadlines, like Lee did. :(

Nothing he does from here on out will change the fact he was a mistake, right from the get go, and always will be. He was pushed on us by a vocal minority as a name people could latch on to as an excuse to actually go to the ballpark, a middle of the order bat that was no more, and a necessary signing. On each and every front, it was a failed move, and nothing will change that.

He had a 10 game hot stretch in May too, when he had something like 10 multiple hit games is a row. Other than those two stretches he has been awful, as ShaneDawg says, a mistake. Hitting now when it means nothing can't take away the bitterness of the stupid mistake of signing him. I get no joy out of him hitting, every time he bats I just see the mistake, not the HOF player that he once was. I don't want to see him in the line up. I rooted for him thru much of the season despite my misgivings around his signing, I can't now.
What I don't understand right now is why Toronto is throwing him pitches in the strike zone. You don't need to to get Vlad out.

Throwing strikes is probably a habit for their guys.

While signing him was a mistake and a waste of money, I don't think the team would have done any better without him or that the younger players have lost much opportunity because of him. Due to Luke Scott's injury, there has been plenty of opportunity for Reimold and others. To me, all 162 games count, and if Vlad has a strong finish that raises his numbers a bit, good for him. He got a lot of heat last year for starting the year hot and finishing cold, so if he does the reverse this year, so be it.
You're also understating his hot streaks earlier in the season. He hit .896 OPS from April 19 to May 22. He had a very good July, interrupted by a stint on the DL, where he had an .894 OPS. His current streak has been going on since August 23 and he's hit .966 in that period. In the end, the overall numbers are what they are.

I take issue with your definitions of hot streaks, particularly when they start.
He had a 7 game stretch (not 10 game stretch, my mistake) ending on May 22 with multiple hits each game. That 7 games he was hot. The rest of the period from April 19 to May 14 his OPS was .722, hardly a hot streak. In starting the hot streak on April 19th, you included 21 consecutive games of .722 OPS in it at the start.
The hot streak was only from May 15 to May 22nd, it did not start in April.
As stated in the first post of this thread, over the last 12 games Vlad has an OPS of over 1, that is hot. Those 12 games started on August 30th. You extend his hot streak 6 more games back to August 23. In those 6 games Vlad had 26 plate appearances, 26 ABs, 7 singles and 1 double, no 3b, no HR, no BB, no HPB, a .307 OBP and a .346 SLG for a .653 OPS. His hot streak did not start back on the 23rd, it is not an 18 game hot streak, it started on the 30th and is a 12 game hot streak.
In July Vlad had all of 60 plate appearances in 17 games (14 that he started) he did have an .894 OPS over that very short month. He missed a lot of games in July.
So basically Vlad has had one 7 game hot streak in May, one 12 game hot streak now, and a good period in the month of July where he missed a lot of games due to the AS break and the DL.
In stating before that he had the late hot streak and the early one in May, is not understating his hot streaks by much (i left out July, but I also overstated the May hot streak saying it was 10 multiple hit games is row when it was only 7). You have over stretched the length of his streaks, stretching out the beginnings of his streaks with stretches of games where he was just not very good.
If Vlad finishes the year hot, it may do some good for him. It might help him get a ST invite next year someplace, but it won't do the Os any good. It would be much more useful to give those ABs to other players to see what they could do.

From May 8th to May 24th he hit 400/424/545 - .969. That's a hot streak. Not including May 24th, he had a 12 game streak from the 8th until the 22nd (12 games) where he hit 412/436/569 - 1.005.
From July 28th to August 9th (21 games), he hit 298/322/488 - 810. Not much in terms of raw power, but certainly for average.

Vlad had a 7 game streak in May when he had 2 or more hits in each game. He was hot then, his OPS was 1.066 over that 7 games. You can tack games on to end and beginning of it and keep his OPS high still, but the fact of the matter is Vlad was hot for 7 games and just so so on either end. He was not hot from May 8th to the 24th, he was only hot for 7 days in the middle of it.
From July 28th to August 9th is all of 13 days, I assume it is a typo you made when you stated that the Os played 21 games in that period. An OPS .810 over 13 days is hardly a hot streak for Vlad. Again you are adding bad days onto good to state a long hot streak. In the 5 games at the end of July (already discussed in this thread) Vlad was 9 for 20, in the first 9 days (8 games) in August he was 5 for 31 (4 singles and 1 double). The hot streak did not extend into August.
Vlad has had very few hot stretches this year and those have been pretty short.

Vlad's slash line is up to .293/.322/.424 after yesterday's performance. Over his last 19 games, Vlad is hitting .408/.427/.662 and has 11 XBH in that span. When he's hot, he's hot.

I just hope WE'RE not dumb and resign him next year! It was inferred on the broadcast the other day that he might be an option.

I was thinking the exact same thing. There must teams he definitely could have helped push a playoff run in September.

It would shock me if Vlad had any interest in playing a season of meaningless games for the O's again next season.

We won't sign him, and then he'll have a big comeback year somewhere else. That's our fate. Book it.
