My take on the Lackey contreversy...TMZ is cowardly..not necessarily John Lackey

Maybe John Lackey is a scum. Maybe he isnt. But the idea that TMZ runs a headline
that the Red Sox pitcher is divorcing his "cancer stricken wife" is typical of tabloid
journalism. Facts alone are NOT necessarily the whole truth.Facts are by themselves only COMPONENTS of the truth! No context is attempted.And on top of that they text HIM minutes before he is to take the mound trying to confront him. Horrible. This
isnt anything close to journalism. Its more cowardly than they attempt to make
Lackey appear.
The so called"publics' right to know" is shamelessly perverted daily by information
sources on the web like TMZ and Radar Online. No, the pubic doesnt have a right
or NEED to know everything. This creeping intrusion into people's personal lives
(Lackey is a public figure but his personal life isnt news in any way) is cheapening
our society and our humanity. Shame on TMZ!

While I wish all bad thing to befall Murdoch and his little "empire"...I don't for a second think he has the exclusive rights to today's Yellow Journalism. TMZ and many many others do the exact same things. I don't know this as fact, but I ASSUME it and have NO QUALMS in that assumption. ;)

He isn't the only one guilty of yellow journalism but as far as I know he's one of the few who is implicated in hacking a number of private phones. No matter which way you slice it, that goes beyond yellow journalism. Back to TMZ, I agree with Roy - pretty shameless of them to exploit someone else's pain and suffering. That's par for the course with TMZ though.

On the periphery the Lackey story makes him sound like a horrible human being, but without knowing the full story (which I don't care to) I'm not going to express an opinion.
That being said, TMZ is nothing but human garbage. They have taken a tragedy and turned it into a monstrosity. I would never advocate restrictions on the press but this sort of irresponsible journalism makes me sick to my stomach and leaves me wondering if something should be done.

I call it the Tyson button.

Everyone watching a show can press a button on their remote voting for a particular reality TV personality currently on screen to be punched in the face. When voting reaches a nationwide critical mass, the show stops, and the puncher (preferably by Mike Tyson) appears out of cloud of smoke (for dramatic effect).

There is a logistical issue of having Tyson on set in Hollywood and wherever the real housewives of New Jersey happen to be.

Unfortunately nothing can be done. If you make limits on organizations like TMZ, others will apply those same limits to legitimate media doing legitimate journalism.

Its like any other freedom: there will always be someone willing to take advantage of the opportunity for their own nefarious or greedy purposes. You just have to focus on the good that is allowed to happen and avoid giving the bad ones the attention they want and need.

That's why you'll never see me on that site or watching that show.
