Anybody watch their 95 minute conference yesterday? I thought it was interesting that after 16 months, they didn't make any changes to the appearance of the iPhone. As someone that just recently purchased the iPhone 4, I'm somewhat satisfied that the only meaningful upgrade (that and the camera). I don't play a lot of games on my iPhone or iPad2 (which already has the A5 processor), so I don't need that upgrade in the phone.
However, I'm slightly annoyed at the Siri feature. First of all, why is that only going to be available on the 4S? Doesn't seem to make sense to me considering it's just software. I doubt it's so powerful that it can't run on the iPhone 4 processor. I say that because, as you may know, Siri has been around as a personal assistant app in the app store forver. Until now, of course. It's vanished like a fart in the wind.
Siri is going to be released as a beta application. I suspect that when it's fully complete, it will be available to all iOS devices. If not, oh well... doesn't look like something I'd take full advantage of, but I hate having things kept from me. I'm much more excited about iOS 5 (coming next Wednesday October 12) than Siri, but it would still be nice to have both.

As someone who likes apple stuff I was thoroughly underwhelmed by their latest offering. What a non-story. I think it would be awesome if everyone they expected to run out and buy one of their over-hyped new phones went and bought a Galaxy S2 (which is what I'm considering). Maybe they'd try to do something that is somewhat worthy of the non-stop fanboy panty wringing next time.
I totally agree with you on Siri as well.

Some jerk stole my iPhone 4. I need a 4S desperately. The old 3G is painfully slow.
Did you see the video in the article? It's an old Apple video predicting using something like this.

I can't see the video you posted at work, but I saw the conference yesterday when I got home. Was it part of that?
My fiance has a Blackberry Torch from AT&T, and I'm trying to get her to switch over to Verizon soon. If she does, I'll probably *ask* her to trade iPhones with me so I can use the 4S. She's not nearly the nerd that I am, so it probably won't make a difference to her which version she uses.

Mine sure is!
I got an email today about it. I checked and my two year contract is up and I should have some credit toward a new phone. Been thinking about this for a while and now I have the money too. I'm getting one!
but I hate having things kept from me.
Apple? Trying to keep things from the public???
The HELL you say!

I literally just got an iPhone 4. I had a BlackBerry through work, but the contract expired so I decided to go with the iPhone.
I kind of figured the new release would be much better than the phone I got, but I have to say I didn't see a whole lot I cared about. So I'm still happy.

Which carrier do you recommend and why between AT&T and Verizon?

I've had AT&T for 4 years prior to converting back to Verizon back in August. It was solely based on coverage and AT&T was horrible up here in Harford County.
I could only make calls in certain areas and dropped a call on about 30% of my calls. I've yet to lose one yet on Verizon.

Yeah, Verizon will win this 8 days a week. It's pricier, but the service is hands-down the best you can get.

How much pricier? What do you pay a month?

I pay about $110 a month for 900 minutes, unlimited texting, and whatever the minimum data plan is. I know I can do better, but for some reason, I don't change my plan.

Verizon is a much worse deal now that the unlimited data plan is gone (I'm grandfathered in for now, but it's not an option for new customers).

I think the new cheap plan is 2gb of data, which, from what I understand, is pretty hard to surpass with normal usage. If you stream a LOT of audio or video on your phone, which some people do, you might go over. But if you just want to check email and surf occasionally, you'll be fine.

I pay $94 for the least amount of minutes, unlimited data and unlimited text with ATT.

I'm considering going back to Sprint. They have unlimited text/data with 450 min and unlimited mobile to mobile for 69.99. The same plan on ATT costs me 94 after taxes and fees. That's with an 8 dollar discount.

That's about what I pay on AT&T.

I have 3 phones on Sprint, all smartphones with 1500 minutes shared and free mobile to mobile, and unlimited, yes its really unlimited data (my 19 year old used over 20gigs last month alone streaming netflix and pandora) and unlimited text, etc and I pay 158 dollars a month. I don't care that someone can open a web page 9/10ths of a second faster than me, I'm about value and I get great service where I live, work and play. Sprint's Apple iPhone 4S has been included in the 69.99 unlimited plan, no data caps, ftw.

Does anybody think that with Steve Jobs' passing that we'll see some changes in Apple's philosophy? For instance, they've ignored Flash forever. Think that will change now? Do you think that iOS software will ever support widgets?
It's been said that the worst leaders are those that try to emulate their predecessor. We'll see how this changes Apple in the next few years.

So am I better off buying a deeply discounted iPhone 4 instead of springing for the new 4s?

I would say yes. Go to Verizon or AT&T and get the iPhone 4 for $99 before all of the old models are gone.
