I think this will be interesting. I would like to see the OH rank the 21 pitchers on the O's 40 man roster by their ceiling from here forward. From best to worst. Is Bundy the highest? How about Britton. Where do Matusz, Arrieta and Chen rank? Doe Johnson have a high ceiling as a closer?

This is not a particularly well informed opinion, but:
1. Dylan Bundy
2. Zach Britton
3. Jake Arrieta
4. Brian Matusz
5. Wei-Yin Chen
6. Jim Johnson (bullpen- though I think his value would be comparable in the rotation)
7. Oliver Drake
8. Tommy Hunter
9. Tsuyoshi Wada
10. Jason Hammel
11. Chris Tillman
12. Pedro Strop
13. Brad Bergesen
14. Darren O’Day
15. Matt Lindstrom
16. Troy Patton
17. Dana Eveland
18. Zach Phillips
19. Jason Berken
20. Alfredo Simon
21. Kevin Gregg

As you can tell there is bias against Gregg (who in reality should probably move up a few spots). I also am valuing rotation and the ability to stay there and contribute long term far above bullpen arms.

I'd start with Bundy, Matusz, Britton, Arrieta and Hunter. I really don't have a good sense of where Chen fits in. He could have a higher ceiling than a couple of those, or maybe not.

I'll do the guys who are starters or most likely starters

Bundy
Matusz
Britton
Hunter
Arrieta
Chen
Hammel
Tillman
Drake
Eveland
Bergy
Wada

Really interested to get a look at Chen. He could potentially move ahead of Hunter and Arrieta on my list. I just don;t think Wada is going to make it as a starter. However, after I get a look at him he could move up as well if he surprises me.

My problem is I've never seen Bundy or Chen pitch, so I can't answer the question. I do believe that Johnson can be a very successful closer if the defense behind him does its job.

If we are going on just 'ceilings'...

1. Dylan Bundy
2. Jake Arrieta (And no, I don't think he will ever reach his 'ceiling')
3. Brian Matusz
4. Zach Britton
5. Wei-Yin Chen
6. Chris Tillman (Again, I don't think he reaches his 'ceiling'... would be #4 if he got his velocity back)
7. Jim Johnson
8. Pedro Strop
9. Matt Lindstrom
10. Alfredo Simon (When his stuff is on, it's ON)
11. Tommy Hunter
12. Jason Hammel

I'm surprised so many people think Britton has a higher 'ceiling' than Matusz...what a difference a year makes. I'll go with this as my top 5 based on ceiling alone:
1. Bundy
2. Matusz
3. Arrieta
4. Britton
5. Tillman

If the OH is right it is hard to see someone with potential as low as Hammel making the rotation when there are other higher potential guys on the team. Hammel score is probably the most surprising to me.

This. I don't thing other names matter much. I think Tillman belongs here and if we're talking about ceilings, I'd have him higher than Hunter. Can't decide if i'd have him higher than Arrieta.
The companion poll would be list the players in order of most likely to reach their ceiling. I'd have Tillman and Matusz at the bottom but I'm hoping like crazy that Matusz is the surprise of the year -- a good one this time. If the team stinks -- as most expect -- but say Matusz and Britton take big steps and maybe Bundy pitches to his potential in the minors.....it would go a long way towards a brighter future.

I don;t see how anyone could have Hammel below Wada or Drake.

From this list I am most surprised...

1) How many people are confusing 'ceiling' with 'not wanting a $6M middle reliever.' I want Kevin Gregg gone as much as anybody, but he isn't #21 when talking about 'ceiling'.
2) Wada at #10?!?!? I feel way too many people are a little too excited with this signing.
3) Simon at #16. He may never really put it all together, but their are times when he flashed brilliance. 94-95 fastball velocity that can touch 97, with a curve that can be a very good pitch. And the ability to start...
4) Drake is too high...

Overall though, the 'summary' is pretty solid...
