ESPN released a simple innocent pic gallery of each team's "Face of the Franchise" with a quick sentence on each person.

Orioles: Adam Jones
Orioles center fielders Adam Jones had career highs in home runs (25) and RBI's (83) last season.

Personally, I disagree. I think Wieters should be the face of the franchise and will be by the end of this season.

I thought it was Kevin Gregg.

I concur. Nothing against Adam Jones, but he will be a free agent after 2013 and I think the odds are better than 50/50 that he is gone by then (only because I think they will trade him or extend him, and the odds are less than 50/50 that he wants to stay). Wieters is the cornerstone the team must build around for the future.

It's Jones because he's the most prominent and outgoing. It's no contest IMO.

Matt Wieters is a better player, but Adam Jones is the fan favorite.

I think you could make an argument for Jones or Markakis. Wieters also, but since Adam has been here longer, and Markakis 2 years before Adam, I would go with one of those 2. Also, since we have been a bad team for such a long time, the standards for the "face of our franchise" aren't particularly high right now, so Adam or Nick would be fine with me. Maybe if we can put together a couple of winning seasons in a row in the toughest division in baseball, we can be more stern in our critique of our "franchise face." :)

Wieters will earn it this year. We'll have two (three) faces.

Don't forget 2110 Eutaw St.

Woah..really? I think Jones is the better player and not even close. Now, that could change but right now Jones is the better player hands down.

Regardless, we definitely lost our "face" with Nick's down year last year. I am pulling for Nick to rebound strong!

Talent aside, Adam Jones is the face of the franchise, if we even have one. Barring injury Roberts would still fill that role but Jones is the most known when it comes to the local community and the national scene. Next would be Markakis and then Wieters. We have some great talent at pitcher, but they just aren't known yet.

I look forward to the days when Britton and Machado are the faces of this franchise.

Why do you think this?

From a straight ESPN stance, Jones makes stellar plays once a week and is a good hitter. Wieters throws people out and is an above average hitter for his position, not really for power. Between the two, its "easy" to say that Jones is more talented.

I love Jones, but I'd take Wieters as the "face of the franchise". Wieters is still improving his bat and is a gold glover defensively at catcher, one of the best Catchers in the game.

2011:

Player A: .262/.328/.778

Player B: .280/.319/.785

Now, the batting average kind of gives away who's who, but I don't think you can really say that Jones is a clearly the better hitter. Once you factor in defense, it's pretty clear who's more valuable.

Adam Jones is my favorite Oriole--but Matt Wieters is easily their best player.

EDIT: I say this understanding that "Face of the Franchise" isn't necessarily synonymous with "best player."

I cannot disagree with you but we aren't the typical fan who goes to one or two games a year.

Yeah, very true--check my edit. I really like Jones, but I'm never quite sure what to say to people who think he's better than Wieters.

This should pretty much begin/end the thread. AJ's got the highlights and the outgoing/outspoken personality. It's very, very clear why he beats out Wieters in a "face of the franchise" contest, and it has little to do with talent/overall value.

Woah..really? I think Jones is the better player and not even close. Now, that could change but right now Jones is the better player hands down.

I think once you factor in that Wieters plays the hardest defensive position on the field and is one of, if not the, best defensive catchers in the game, it's hard to rate Jones as a better or more valuable player. The only thing I see going for Jones is his longer track record of hitting well.

If you take defensive metrics and reputation at face value Jones would have to be hugely better with the bat to be Wieter's equal.

Regardless, we definitely lost our "face" with Nick's down year last year. I am pulling for Nick to rebound strong!

I think we all hope that.

I thought it was Kevin Gregg.

I could not agree more. If it is Adam Jones, he is no more than a "mask" of the franchise. And he doesn't even do a good job masking the failures of the franchise, because the failures are so obvious to most.

Gregg truly represents what this franchise has been all about. The franchise has been one of the biggest failures in baseball for over a decade. Gregg represents that status very well. Also, instead of Gregg admitting that he had a bad year last year and needs to improve and get better so he can earn the closer role back, he seems confused as to why the media is saying that he was awful and should not be the closer this year. Wow. That sounds exactly like the Orioles.

:puke:

Wieters is one of the best catchers in MLB, where does AJ rank in his position?

You're probably right.

Though it should be Wieters. Not because AJ isn't a great player and/or a fan favorite. But, do we know how much long he'll be in Baltimore after this season?

Unfortunately, Peter Angelos is the face of our franchise.

To me the face of the franchise isn't defined by the fans of the team and certainly not the die hards like us OHers. I took a quick poll around my office (mostly sox fans) and it was clearly wieters or Angelos.

3 of those 4 descriptions fit Matt Wieters as well. I guess it's the lack of charisma that costs him.

The charisma IS the thing. Being the face of the franchise is partly being a visible positive, entertaining presence. Mauer is charismatic, Jeter is, Jones is. Wieters is not, at least not as much. Markakis and Wieters are a lot alike.

I agree that Jones is the face of the franchise. At least at this point. I think Wieters is already the heart of the franchise with a good chance to earn more of a superstar reputation with average fans on the national scale. I think we should all hope that Wieters becomes the face as well. No offense to Jones at all.
