View Full Version : Did we just see the worst pitch ever thrown by a major league pitcher?

That grand slam pitch to Wieters is the definition of a meat ball IMO. I'd love to see VaTech break THAT one down!

Well sometimes you just throw it right down the middle and hope for good things.

Benitez.
I've used that as a verb for the last 15 years. Stewart Benitezed that pitched to Wieters, for sure.

In my day, we called that the "Pennington" which replaced the "Dixon".

I believe Hugh "Losing Pitcher" Mulcahy said that.

Kenny Dixon?
Yes, he of the 95 mph belt high fastball with no movement.

I believe that ball Griffey hit off Pennington is still going.

I literally hadn't heard of him before this weekend when I helped out at a corporate field day where he was one of the former Orioles. He was actually throwing at a bunch of the people during batting practice :p

When I was a kid they were calling him "the next Jim Palmer". He only fell 242 wins short.

Probably won't either. I think it's currently orbiting Jupiter, acting as one of it's moons.

We should also talk about one of the worst misses by a CF by De Aza. Wow that was terrible.

At?
How was his command?
Looked like a changeup on 3-2 which isn't a bad choice. However, when you throw it up in the zone and over the middle it does look like a meatball.

Agreed. If you're gonna throw 84, don't put it there.

When its extra innings the bases are loaded and there are 3 balls, what choice does he have?
Sure it was a bad pitch, but kudos to the orioles for putting him in that position

Is that a cricket bat? I'd love to see a Major League locker room trashed with a cricket bat.

I would rather have my pitcher give up a homer in that spot than to walk in a run.

So you would rather give up 4 runs than 1 run?
I think I see why your managerial career never got off the ground.

That sounds OldFan-esque.
Only, he hated walks. Even when it was hitters on his team getting them.

Kenny Dixon?
Dixon wasn't a bad prospect, or even a bad pitcher for a while. His 1986 strikeout rate has only been bettered (among starters) by Mussina, Phoebus, and Bedard in O's history.
But when he went south in '87 he really went south. His HR rate was almost as high as Brian Matusz' last year, but he kept it up for 105 innings. He still holds the All Time Record for highest HR/9, min 100 innings in a season. #4 on the list is David Hernandez in 2009. #12 is Sid Fernandez in '94.
'87 was a weird year. Five of the top ten HR/9 rates (min 100 IP) from 1900-1993 were in 1987. It was MLB's test case for the jackrabbit ball they reintroduced in '94.

Well team is already down two runs I don't want my pitcher walking in another run. Make the batter earn it.
