That's what I'm afraid of. Because it MAY be true, it's very easy to come in here and state it cryptically and watch everyone flip out.
It'd be like getting on a Yankees board in May and posting that Torre was fired.

All the other coaches better be gone too, Crowley should be responsible for the anemic hitting, Trebelhorn needs to be gone for his terrible 3rd base coaching and Dempsey for his difficulty and meddling. All of them except Elrod and Perlozzo if he's going to be the interim manager.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- With the Orioles having lost 16 of their last 18 games, manager Lee Mazzilli was fired Thursday morning and replaced on an interim basis by bench coach Sam Perlozzo.
Mazzilli was hired before the 2004 season to replace Mike Hargrove. He went 129-139 in his first stint as a major league manager, including 51-55 this year.
The Orioles are 4-16 since the All-Star break and have fallen 10 1/2 games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. They spent 62 straight days in first place, but currently are in fourth. They're closer to last place than first.
This is the first time majority owner Peter Angelos has fired a manager during the season.
Perlozzo never has managed in the majors, but he was runner-up to Mazzilli during the most recent search.

from Baltimoresun.com
Interesting details on Burnett deal.
Angelos looked at the proposed A.J. Burnett/Mike Lowell package from the Florida Marlins and found about 60 million reasons not to like it. That's how many dollars it would have cost to sign Burnett and pay the remainder of Lowell's contract.
It also may have been the only way for the Orioles to stay in the hunt for a playoff berth ... but they passed.
Mazzilli didn't say a word, though he is believed to have been strongly in favor of the deal. He has never publicly aired any discontent over the way this flawed team has been put together.

I don't think Mazz was to blame, but firing him is an immediate way to announce to everyone that there is extreme disappointment with the way the team is playing. The O's got everyone healthy, and things didnt improve... in fact the team seems to be playing its worse baseball in years.

Well, sometimes all you hear are rumors and maybe that is all he had. But, once again, OH breaks the news before the big guys. Next post Wild Bill makes I imagine will get less scrutiny.
Very true; however, he might have been better received if he at least said that it is only a rumor or if it is true where he heard it from, even if he couldn't provide a link to the source. It was done in a sort of hit-and-run style that tends to make people suspicious.

You and Max. So easy to accuse, now. Guy comes on and offers NO proof and we're just supposed to swallow it? I don't know about you, but I like even a RUMOR of truth first... even just an "I know a guy in the organization." Something.
I'm not saying anyone needed to believe anything he said but you should at least give the rumor some time. Throwaway comments and jokes were fine because he was rather cryptic but I thought bashing the poster as a troll and the other personal nonsense was completely out of line.
Hopefully this teaches some of you smug old-timers that new-timers sometimes know what they are talking about. Put otherwise, don't judge posters by the quantity of their posts.

Yes, but you do realize just how fishy it looks if somebody who doesn't post just breaks HUGE news like this with absolutely no back up at all? Even saying 'I'm sorry, I can't cite my source, just trust me' would have went a long way instead of the intentionally cryptic comments.

I still think Beattie goes and Flanagan stays.........but since they both were the ones who convinced PA to hire Maz, maybe Pete dumps them both and begins yet another 5-year plan.
...or sells it. I have generally been of the opinion that while Angelos has many flaws he does have a few good qualities (like a clear loyalty to B'more)….and he didn't seem that egregiously bad relative to most of the other egomaniacal freaks who own professional sports teams. But I now think that new ownership is the only way to fix this creaky organization. .....errr no offense Earl or WIld Bill...in case you are Mr. Angelos.

This was inevitable. With all the bad press the Orioles have been getting, they needed to do something big to turn attention away from Raffy and the losing streak. Maybe what happened to the Marlins in 2003 will happen to us, this is almost exactly what happened to them and the won the World Series. Plus, I've wanted Perlozzo as the manager the whole time, he's finally getting his chance and well, he can't do much worse than what's been happening. GO O'S!

First off, kudos to Wild Bill. Who's your source (I'm sure you can't tell us that...but it's worth a try :) ).
Anyway, I don't like this move. I'll admit that I was never enamored with Maz as a tactician. I thought that he had little clue how to manage a bullpen and was very reluctant to play small ball sespite the team's recent struggles. However, I thought that he should have been, at the very least, allowed to complete the season. If they didn't want to bring him back in '06, I'd understand that. But this just adds to the turmoil for the rest of the season. I have no false notions that we're still in contention, but I'm afraid that this move will send us into a death spiral. I hope I'm wrong.

Only one other aspiration
In attendance that day in Baltimore was Mazzone's best friend, Cumberland's Sam Perlozzo, the Orioles bench coach. Because of the friendship the two share, Mazzone keeps a close eye on the Orioles, who finished third in the American League East last year, marking the first time since 1997 they finished higher than fourth. The Orioles, however, have not had a winning season since 1997.
"If they get any kind of pitching at all," Mazzone said, "they are a team to be reckoned with, no question about it."
With Camp Leo XV, the pre-spring training camp Mazzone conducts for Braves pitchers set for the first week of February, the former Bruce High School lefthander will follow the Hot Stove league closely in anticipation of what the 2005 season holds for the Braves. Widely recognized as the best pitching coach in baseball, Mazzone, who last year authored a book, "Tales from the Braves Mound," says he's content with his station in life coaching the Braves' pitchers.
"Absolutely," he said. "What would I do if I wasn't going to the ballpark every day? I love it as much now as I did when I was nine-years-old. Maybe more."
A successful manager in the minor leagues, Mazzone says he has no aspirations to manage in the big leagues.
"No way," he said. "My only other aspiration is to be Sam's pitching coach. After that, we'll be done."
The time for Perlozzo, who has interviewed for the Seattle Mariners job as well as the Orioles' position twice, to manage in the big leagues is drawing near, according to Mazzone.
"It's going to happen," he said. "There is no doubt in my mind or the minds of anybody in the big leagues. Sam is going to be a manager, and a (darn) good one at that. And like I said, I'll be his pitching coach, and after that? We'll be done."

Could be, but according to a JFK interview with Bill Stetka, they informed Perlozzo last night, or at least told him to "be prepared."

Look, this is a community. What happened amounts to a bunch of us who know each to varying degrees sitting in a room, and a complete stranger walking in, and saying "Mazillis fired." Then just standing there. When we ask him how he knows, or who he is, or any of that, he just stands there and says "just watch the news."

Maybe that was the problem. Some turned this into a prank and everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Even if it was untrue, there could have been some debate about the pros/cons of such a move by the O's rather than tearing down someone because they didn't have a web source, which was probably because they didn't have one. They were either right there or linked to someone who was, and couldn't give much more info due to risk of losing this link.

Questioning is one thing and that was fine given his limited history and vague comments. If he was full of crap John would have checked with his sources and the post deleted and the issue would have been dead. However, calling the poster a douche-monger and troll while threatening to spit on, beat up, or ban him even if correct was way over the line and totally indefensible.

Well, I'm guilty in my very first post of calling "troll," however, I'd like to point out that I also said I'd eat crow if that wasn't the case. And I did apologize. I said this elsewhere, but here it is again: We are a community. Just because it's an internet community doesn't make it any less viable. What happened today was essentially if a bunch of us were sitting in a room. We all know each other to varying degrees. Then, a complete stranger comes in, shouts that Mazilli is fired, then refuses to answer any questions we all have, including "who are you, how do you know this, where'd you find out," etc. Then some other complete stranger comes in and backs it up, and also doesn't answer said questions. You see how frustrating that could be to people in this community?
You know, I think there's a reason why Tony has the "new posters, introduce yourself" rule.

Unless the person gives out names, I doubt they'd be caught. Heck, I would have probably backed off if they had said "I can't say who I am or how i know, but within the hour the story will break, stay tuned." It would have been cryptic but it least acknowledges the fact that we really have no reason to trust them right out of the gate.

However, calling the poster a douche-monger and troll while threatening to spit on, beat up, or ban him even if correct was way over the line and totally indefensible.
I'm the one who clled him a douche-monger. It was not meant to injure or offend--it was a joke. I apologized for doubting the poster, but it was pretty clear to me that he was trying to rile people up by being vague and then saying an hour later, "I told you so."
You can't bring news like that and say, "I heard it on the wire" and then disappear. Even if the post was innocent and not intended to get posters (who are very sensitive during a very trying time for the O's right now) fired up, it is still excusable for peopel to question him. We questioned him, he gave us more cryptic posts and we called him out for it.
This thread has gone on too long with back and forth. The people who called out the poster have apologized. What else should we do?
I've said this already, but all he would have had to do was say, "I heard it from a solid source, but I can't reveal it." That's it. And none of this would have happened.

OMG someone with a few posts knows something we dont, lets bash him and ban him. Grow up. And who really cares about trolls. Do they hurt your feelings or something
YOu are kidding, right? Thats exactly what we wanted by being cryptic and that is to be not believed to be thrashed and then for everyone to apologize. He got exactly what he wanted.
Tony has banned dozens of trolls since the trading deadline thing so dont think everyone is so innocent.

He was a senators fan as a kid, and an O's fan since they left DC, so he was an O's fan for quite some time. I think the O's poor showing for the last 10 years or so had an impact on him. Being Redskins and O's fans the last 10 years hasn't been easy.

Questioning is one thing and that was fine given his limited history and vague comments. However, calling the poster a douche-monger and troll while threatening to spit on, beat up, or ban him even if correct was way over the line and totally indefensible.
I am the one that said I will beat him up and it was clearly a joke. I am also the one that said give him a chance it could be real. And I am the one that said to have him banned either way. For the latter I apologize. ;)

A Jib is the Forward sail on a Sloop rigged sailboat. It is attached to the forestay and is called a Genoa if it extends past the mast and a Jib if it stops forward of the mast. Could be the name of an old ship, but the common use of Jib is the forward sail. It's the gas pedal, where the main sail controls stead movement and the heal of the ship.

Players recently voiced displeasure with Mazzilli in private, and according to a club source, shortstop Miguel Tejada, once a big Mazzilli supporter, called a team meeting and said the team would have to win despite Mazzilli.

If you don't like cryptic posts never go to a college sports forum. Thats all I ever see at my chosen site (look at my name and guess which one it is :) ) But when I get that info on a recruit or players a few hours before it hits the major news sites, I feel some sort of satisfaction.

I would have been in favor of retaining Mazz due to the Ray Miller and continuity argument. But with the tailspin and the total inability to inspire the team, something had to be done.

Firing a manager is the last, most desperate move you can make. I now say we finish fourth. And our suffering continues into the next couple of years. I would have been happier if the front office had been extended at the same time. If we have a new GM come November, there will be noy joy in Camden Yards for quite a few years.
I'm not happy about this. And I won't hesitate to blame all the OH people who have questioned every single move the poor guy made in his brief tenure as Orioles manager. As Roberts pointed out, his players let him down, but you jackals never stopped baying for his blood. I hope you're proud of yourselves now.
And it's too bad that Mazz and people who think he's a decent guy can't watch you do your jobs and militate for you to get fired when you screw up.

Let me make this very clear, there are a lot or lurkers on this board that are very "in the know". Your behavior and the behavior of a few others on here was pretty bad in this thread. I can understand you guys being a little skeptical, but you need to realize who reads this board and who posts early inside information just might be the guy with 1 or two posts.
By all means question it, but some of you went as far to call the guy names before it came out to be true. Ridiculous.
Do not chase away people with a few posts but you never know who they really may be. Obviously false rumors is banable offense so let it run it's course without getting personal.
BTW, this thread is not just at Wedge but a few others who acted disrespectful. I'm not sure why some of you don't seem to realize why this type of information hits this board first. It's not by accident.

I cannot believe how we're being attacked for questioning the initial post. The guy wouldn't give any basis for what he was saying and sounded like a complete troll. We don't allow trolls here, and thank goodness for that, or we'd have 20+ false rumors posted a day by pranksters. So we're not supposed to get mad if a rumor sounds/looks false? I'm sorry, but this thread began like a prank and many people reacted appropriately. Only when John posted did it sound like this firing might happen. Come to find out, it wasn't a prank, which makes it an interesting case study of "pie on your face."
I'm not attacking, but I have to say it definitely went overboard. Some have said if he would have told them he had inside info, it would have been better. But then, they would have badgered him about what kind of inside info. Then, if he would have said he had an inside source, he would have been badgered about what kind of inside source....it would have just went on and on no matter what he said...until it was confirmed.
He definitely went about it the wrong way, but I honestly don't think there would have been a way to go about it without the same thing happening unless he flat out named his source. It all comes down to the number of posts he had...which is fine to take into consideration, but pretty shameful to continuously blast him for it.
We almost chased away another source by the same behavior, I'm sorry, I can't even remember his name unless I see it, then I recognize it. You would think we would learn to back off at least a little and let it play out before totally condemning someone.
If I'm out of line, I apologize, but I felt it necessary to get that off my chest.

Wedge, that's why I said it's fine to be skeptical. I probably would not have believed it right away either but I would have strted checking my sources to see if there was validity. I agree that it was strange, but the name calling and pack mentality that a few of you showed is not in the spirit of the Hangout community.

Thats an interesting comment. I'm going to speak my mind a little on Mazz, after keeping mum for a long time because I wasn't compltely sure I wasn't mistaken and I wanted him to succeed.
I kind of got that impression a little bit last year. Sometimes it felt like that was the case - that they were stuck with him and had to play through it. I think the rumored widespread discontent with Mazz among the players was real last year - because there have been rumors to that effect for a long time now. I thought it might be true, but didn't weant to undercut him on here.
So I supported him, but had come to the conclusion in the last few months that right or wrong, he was going to have to go at seasons end, whether because he was not up to it or because its just baseball and a move had to be made. I think there will be a change in the way the GM structure works too, somehow, in the offseason.
Maybe he really was in over his head as a MLB manager. Thats something I never wanted to say, but I did wonder it sometimes. I sound like I'm piling on, but there was always something a little uncomfortable about the guy that seemed odd, I don't know. Did anyone else feel that way. I wish him well, but I'm kind of glad the experiment is over for us.

I think what some of the members of this board need to realize is that some of us have actual jobs and families, which means that we can't stay glued to the board 24/7. That means, we post sporadically and can't rack up 1000's of post in a short period of time (thus, justifying our presence on this board). There are many who read the board to gain a pulse of the O's fandom and to contribute periodically. That may mean that a cryptic or short response gets posted. I can imagine that Wild Bill had a few seconds to put up a quick post and maybe didn't have too much time to elaborate (he had something on the stove, he was at work, he was calling his source, etc., etc.).
Sorry to beat a dead horse, but as I read through the entire post, I was very saddened by the name calling and threats (even if it was in jest). I remember a similar scenario a few years back when a source revealed that Javy had been signed. (Has that poster been back?). This board is a great source for O's news, info, and opinion. Thanks Wild Bill for your insiders info and please come back with more info and insight.

How about we all try taking a bit more time saying thank you for what he did tell us, rather then getting grumpy by trying to figure out who it is, or pressuring him for more information. There's too much whining like 5-year-olds going on, "But, I waaaaaana know who he is."

I am curious about the Dempsey/Perlozzo relationship. I remember a post a few weeks ago about someone overhearing a dinner conversation of Dempsey bashing Mazzilli. This just makes me wonder where he stands in the organization. This coaching staff must have had some tension at times due to Perlozzo and Dempsey being beaten out by Mazzilli and then having to work for him... Just makes me wonder.

I would be very surprised if senior management in the O's front office get their jollies by posting leaks on internet forums. It would be very unprofessional and would probably incur Peter's wrath if it got out. It's my impression that junior employees in the Warehouse have been fired for posting here in the past.
"Wild Bill" registered in December 2003. I don't recall; was that about the time of the Mazzilli hiring?
Anyhow, the families of players and coaches and managers are among those who read team forums for information about their family members, but rarely post. I recall several years ago when I used to have my e-mail address posted in my sig; I once got an e-mail from an older brother of a Cardinals pitcher. He never registered or posted in the forum, but he had a virus on his computer that parsed his browser cache for e-mail addresses, then mailed itself to me. I e-mailed him back and recommended he do an A-V scan of his computer. He responded, thanked me, told me who he was, and that was the only time we communicated.
So, assuming that "Wild Bill" was really living in North Ohio in December 2003, my guess is that he's someone with a close relative in the O's organization who would have had knowledge of the firing shortly after the decision was made. Remember, he didn't just predict the firing; he named both the replacement and the approximate time of the public announcement. That suggests that "Wild Bill" might be a close relative of Mazzilli, Perlozzo, someone in the O's HR office, or someone in the O's publicity office.
Anyone working in the publicity office ought to have been pretty busy yesterday. It's difficult to imagine they would have a window open on their computer and pop in here to read this thread and make a half dozen posts during that critical couple of hours before the formal announcement. Too many things to do and too much chance of getting caught.
The close timing of Wild Bill's registration with Mazzilli's hiring is intriguing, but I have a hard time believing that someone close enough to Mazzilli to have shared the information would have been excited enough about the scoop to have posted it here. His family and friends should still be grieving. If it were a family member or acquaintance who didn't particularly like Mazzilli, I have a hard time believing they'd have enough interest in the O's to register here.
The prompt appearance of "earl" confirming Wild Bill's story only 1 hour and 8 miinutes after the thread began strongly implies that, despite what Wild Bill said, earl is either Wild Bill or another close friend/family member. It would be a remarkable coincidence for another "lurker" to both have the inside information and to feel compelled to confirm it within such a short span of time, before the news was widely enough spread to make it difficult or impossible to get into the site. (I was never able to get page 4 or any subsequent page to load yesterday.)
My guess? Perlozzo called his parents or another close family member either last night or early this morning with the news, and they shared it with other close family members or friends. Wild Bill and earl are probably close cousins of Perlazzo, in their teens, and sufficiently baseball fans to check occasionally on how their famous cousin's team is doing. Earl probably signed up last month when speculation about Mazzilli's fate escalated, in the hope that Perlozzo would get the job and the desire to keep track of the "buzz".
Any speculation? Wild Bill would you be willing to give us that name?
Not likely. I doubt if Sam would be very happy if it were a member of his family who violated his confidence.

Migrant Redbird, where were you when they were trying to figure out the identity of Deep Throat?
Well though out, my friend.

I shuddered when this thought occured to me...the guy who was hired to replace Maz last year could have been Ray Miller...
No, but it was one of the other four manager candidates mentioned.
