I like those picks Mackus, especially Carolina winning and dook going out in the first round.
I will differ with you on only one minor point: I think GT will beat UVA in the semis.
As much as I'd love to avenge the 2 losses to VT at some point in the tournament, I'd be content to avenge both the Maryland and GT losses en route to the title.
And as much as I'd love to roll the trifecta against dook this year, I'd be just as happy tp see them go down in flames to State.

I'm not even going to attempt any predictions, but I will say this to UNC fans: Look out for FSU in round 2. They're on the bubble, and they have the best player in the league (if not much else). Just like Tech last week, talent + desperation can make a decent team better.

I agree, I really, really wanted to pick FSU over UNC, and I think if either Clemson or FSU can put beat UNC that they'll get into the tournament. With the way Thornton played this weekend, it looks like he knows the only way FSU gets to the dance is if he carries them. This is the reason he came back to school, and I think he's gonna have a great game against both Clemson and UNC. I'd love to see them win and the ACC to get 8 teams.

I am literally too frightened to make picks right now. Seriously. I feel like I need to wait until Wednesday afternoon when I'm down in Tampa to do it, because that will have meant I've waited as long as possible to try and forget what happened on Saturday.
Until then, I'll be trying to come up with some rational explanation to pick Virginia to even win one game so you guys don't call me a homer.

Is there anyone, anyone, that thinks that UVa can beat Duke (assuming Duke beats State)?
I'm pretty sure I'm the only UVa fan on the board, and I might have to get drunk to convince myself we can beat them.

Ga Tech over Wake

Ga Tech over Va Tech
UNC over Clemson
RD 3
UNC over MD-very close hard fought game.
Ga Tech over VA

UNC over Ga Tech
Maryland loses a great game mainly due to being tired and UNC having relative fresh legs. Ga Tech is playing really good ball right now. Maryland gets a much needed extra day off and it is no great dissapointment losing to a rested UNC team.

Why can't you beat Duke. UVA had super quick guards and Duke's guards are too slow to stick with the Terps guards. If Cain can hold his own and either Diane or Joseph get hot down go the Dukies...You've seen the sign..."Beating Duke is so easy that even a caveman could do it!"

Perhaps but Duke has a favorable road to the final game IMO.
IMO, GT, MD or Duke will win the tourney. If GT beats Duke, i wouldn't be surprised.

Their path really is the reason. If they have to go through MD AND UNC, i would not pick them to win it.
Only 3 teams in the ACC worry me...GT, MD and UNC.
Now, this is taking nothing away from VT, who has played Duke well since they came into the conference or UVA, who did barely beat Duke this year but i still like our chances in this type of environment(remember, alot of these Duke guys have a tourney win under their belts...They do have some experience in that regards).
I actually did almost pick Duke to lose to GT.

Yea, Adrian Joseph is the guy you're forgetting.
Yea, I guess I just saw everyone picking Duke over UVa and thought, geeze, I'm a UVa fan, and I'm really having a hard time convincing myself we can win, what does everyone else think?
Anyways, you are right, I have said numerous times that the difference in our team this year is the play of Diane/Joseph. They usually play well at home, and crappy on the road.
I thought it was interesting, though, I went back and looked at our 3 road wins this year (Clemson, NC State, and Maryland) and looked at waht Joseph and Diane did.
In the game at Clemson, we trailed by liek 15 with 5 minutes to go. Joseph hit 3 3's in our run to come back and win the game. He had 11 points in the game and Diane had 10.
In the MD game, Joseph had 13 points (3 3's again) and Diane had 8 (although he struggled).
And the game at NC State, we won easily, simply because SS and JR played like Superman and Batman. JR had 29 and SS had 27.
For a bad example, against Wake on Saturday they combined for 4 points. Against Miami, they combined for 8 points.
Basically, unless we get an unreal effort from JR AND SS, we need Joseph and Diane to combine for around 20 points to be able to win.
So, while all this week anytime anyone talks about UVa in the media, all you are gonna hear about is SS and JR, remember that Diane and Joseph are the keys.
Their path really is the reason. If they have to go through MD AND UNC, i would not pick them to win it.

Well you weren't worried about MD going into Cameron and winning either. And I'm not sure you can so easily dismiss UVA, VATECH, and FSU considering they are a combined 3-0 against Duke, 2 of those games being at Duke.

I think this Henderson thing will actually be a blessing in disguise for both Duke and North Carolina. People have been questioning Duke's heart all year, and we all know that K likes a challenge. It's been specualted that during those late time outs, K was just challenging them just to keep playing hard, and to allow nothing easy for the Heels. Not to suggest he told them to foul hard but there could have been a message sent.
As for the Heels, hopefully we play with intensity for 40 minutes every game from here on out. We'll see.

I've gotta say, I like Duke's draw much better than Maryland. Obviously the UNC game is difficult for us. I expect Duke to lose to Virginia. I just think Singletary and Reynolds will run Scheyer and Paulus to death. That said, I like Duke's chances of advancing at least as much as Maryland's if not more.

So tonight we got our tickets for this week, and I am super stoked. For the first time at the ACC Tournament, I'm sitting in the lower level!! To make it even sweeter, I'm in the Virginia section!!!! Can't remember the number off the top of my head, but I believe my family and I will be in section 110. Sort of in the corner. Hopefully close enough where I can get some solid Paulus-directed heckling in on Thursday night (and probably to him on Friday night as well).
Hopefully the Dukies don't ruin my fun and knock us out on Friday, because being in the UVa section in a Semi-Final game on Saturday would be freaking sweet!
31 hours till my flight to Tampa leaves!!!!

The first year (in Charlotte) I went because my Dad got tickets through a business connection (he works in the beer business and knows tons of people involved in all different types of sports, which means I end up getting to all sorts of cool things, like Cal's 2131 game, his last game, Wiz playoff tickets, went to the Mason-UCONN game last year, stuff like that)
Anyways, it was so cool that first year, since both my parents are Terp fans and my brother is a Heel fan, we decided to make the ACC Tournament like our annual family vacation. So, my Dad tries to get hook-ups with tickets, but when it doesn't work out, we pony up the money and buy them off of e-bay (and since it is our one big vacation of the year, the money isn't that big of a deal).

I don't see any team winning 4 in 4 days. That eliminates Duke,MD and GT.
That leaves UNC, UVA, BC, and VT.
BC- Forget about it. They have a chance to beat MD but that is it. They just aren't the same team since they lost Williams.
UVA- No reason to believe they can win 3 away from home. Just a horrible road team. I mean the resident UVA fan here knows deep down they got no shot of winning three in a row.
VT-I think VT could be the sleeper here. I know they have struggled down the stretch a little but they have proven they can beat good teams on the road and Greenberg is a good coach. I think they will be ready to go.
UNC- The team to beat. I think they have something to prove and possibly are still playing for a 1 seed. I expect them to show up and play some ball this weekend.
Finals - UNC over VT

Theres always a chance of victory when you have the best player in the conference on your team. Other things need to go right, but one guy can will you to a conference tournament championship. Recent examples include John Gilchrist, Gerry McNamara, and Lamar Odom.

Technically, Wake wasn't Chris Paul led, because he was suspended for their first round game against NC State, and they lost without him.

Starting with their game against Miami last weekend, it looks like Thornton has decided to be the guy the rest of the way this season. He really wants to get them to the tournament. Should be a great finish to today's game and hopefully if FSU wins they can give UNC a tough game.

If FSU doesn't win today (which I think they will) it will be because they play stupid. Hamilton is a very good coach, but why he doesn't give the ball to Thornton every single play is beyond me. He should at least touch the ball every set. Its been 4 minutes in the 2nd half and he hasn't taken a shot yet (at least according to the gamecast I'm following online).

Again, they'll be lucky to beat Clemson. Why everyone loves FSU is beyond me.
Like Rob said, they have without a doubt the best player in the conference and are the best FT shooting team in the conference. They're definitely a dangerous team. They've got their weaknesses, which is why they can play tight with a team like Clemson, but they've also got their strengths, which is why they could shock a team like UNC.

There is one thing that keeps FSU from being a top20 team IMO...Stupidity.
They just play dumb. The second half of this game is a good example..Not going to Thorton and stupid shot selection.
BTW, FSU ball with 8 seconds left..Clemson just committed a backcourt. Tie game.

FSU advances.....Tough to end the game on a foul call and may not have even been a foul...Of course, the refs did a poor job of not calling the foul on Douglas when he was shooting a 3.
Does this make FSU a lock???

That's if UNC plays well and actually decides to play defense.

Not even close. They'd be a lock with a win over UNC.
They're probably one of the last 4 out at this point. If other conference tournaments go as expected and other bubble teams lose, theres a good chance they get in. GT isn't even definitely a lock at this point even though they'll still likely get in even with a 1st round loss.

I don't think they're a stone cold lock. If they lose by 20+ and theres some other bubble teams that play really well, they could get bumped out.
I don't think that will happen, but a scenario exists in which they could be NIT bound, so they aren't a complete lock. I think they have about a 90% chance of making the tournament though, if not higher.
FSU is still probably about 50/50 at this point.

Thorton is indeed a beast. Foul call at the end was horrible. Thorton was out of control on the drive. You can't make that call and at the end of a game between two teams fighting for their NCAA tourny lives. You got to let them play 5 more min.
FSU isn't a lock by any means. I think they are in the same boat MD was last year against BC. If they win they are in, if they play UNC close I think they have a good shot, but if they get blown out I think it severly hurts their chances.

They finished 8-8 in the best conference in the country(even by RPI)..They have wins over BC, UNC, Duke and Memphis..They have 8 top 50 rpi wins and they have won 7 of their last 10.
Now, if they lose to Wake and alot of other bubble teams win their tourneys or win alot of big games, MAYBE they could get in trouble but i just don't think it will happen. I think you can pencil them in.

1st Round:
Maryland over Miami
Georgia Tech over Wake
Duke over NCST

Virginia over Duke
Georgia Tech over Viginia Tech
Maryland over Boston College
3rd Round:
Maryland over UNC
Virginia over Georgia Tech
Final:

Ha ha, not quite...still one more game too. It would be funny if FSU beat UNC (to get into the NCAA tourny), then lost to Miami in the semi finals. Then Miami faces and beats GT giving the ACC 9 bids.

Wow. Simply unreal. Just walked back into the hotel room. What an unbelievable day of basketball. That might be the best round of games I've ever seen. All 4 games came down to the last posession. Anyways, some thoughts:
Florida State over Clemson. Great start to the day, again looked like Thornton simply wasn't going to let them lose. After Hammonds turned the ball over, Thornton walked right up to Leonard Hamilton and was pointing at himself, like "This is my shot". Live, I thought the foul was legit, but after seeing it on TV it was definitely a bad call. But Thornton was huge, and i cant wait to see him against the Heels tomorrow.
Miami over Maryland. Haven't looked at the thread on this game, but I'm guessing you guys are pissed. They looked really flat in the first half. Gist played his worst half of the year. They made a nice run to make it close, but just couldn't get it done. Miami dominated the boards, and Ibekwe was AWFUL. He took about 5 jump shots from outside the paint that he had no business taking, and just all-around played terribly. Tough loss for the Terps, I think they will still be a 5 seed though.
NC State over Duke. Unreal game. Costner was sensational. Paulus played really well for Duke. Atsur, Scheyer, Grant, McRoberts, McCauley, Nelson. Just a lot of players stepping up and making plays. Great end of regulation and overtime was great with both teams scoring back and forth. Great atmosphere as everyone in there was rooting against Duke.

Good points, and it's not like Virginia Tech had a tough game tonight. I'm very impressed with both of State's wins this weekend, but it ends for them on Saturday.

Well, first of all, let;s say I had a little less fun today than yesterday.
Carolina looked awesome in the first game, and BC looked really sluggish in the first 30 minutes against Miami. Nice job to come back and get an OT win.
Then comes the Virginia-State game. We are up 14 at halftime. We were rolling. Sean was hitting everything. We were gettting turnovers and running. God. 14. 14. 14. 14. 14. at the half.
Everything fell apart in the second half. NC State ran that pick-back screen-back cut that got them open lay ups. When they didnt have the open lay-up, they drained 3's. They shot 74 percent from the field in the second half. 74 percent. Good god.
Anyways, even with all of that, with 2 minutes left, we are down 2, and Mamadi Diane gets an offensive rebound and hits the jumper in the lane and gets fouled to tie it up! He goes to the line to go for the lead!! We are going bonkers in our section. Then. We see the refs walking the other way. And we finally realize. They called an offensive foul on Diane. Absolute horst *****. I hate when people complain about refs in games. I hate it. There were a ton of reasons for us to have not won tonight, but even with all of that, we should have had Diane at the line to go up 1 with under two minutes to go. Absolutely crushing. Then Grant came down and scored and it was over after that. God. I'm still hurting from this one. Up 14 at the half.
Anyways, we are probably gonna be a 7 seed now, a 6 if we are lucky. Semis tomorrow, Carolina-BC and State-Tech. At this point, I'm rooting for State to go ahead and take the whole thing and get the ACC another team in the tournament.
Somebody give me a reason not to absolutely expect to lose our first round NCAA game. Please. Cuz I can't find one.

The announcers didn't expect that call either, and Leitao was furious. I think you guys will win at least one in the Tourney. We'll re analyze when the brackets come out and we know where everybody is.
What I really wanted to ask you was how have the crowds been. I can only assume that Carolina brought a ton of people, as did State because they usually do as well. Any other teams well represented down there?

When I watched the play live, I thought it was a foul on Diane. Even said it to my roommate. Watching the one replay they showed in slo mo, I was a little less certain. But my first reaction was that it was an offensive foul.
Besides, they more than made up for it with a gift and a half given to Singletary on one of his three-point field goals that didn't go shortly after. He flopped like new coke and still ended up at the line for 3.

As much as I think Virginia had a great year...I am picking them to lose in the first round. One of the worst road teams in the nation. Could they surprise, sure. Will they? Common sense says no

I also thought it ws an offensive foul. If I were a UVA fan, I'd probably see it differently. But, as a fan of neither team, I thought the right call was made.

I EXPECT UVA to win. All of the haters will be piling on them for not winning on the road all year, losing in the ACC tourney, yada yada. Leitao is a good coach, and they will have finally learned from the experience of losing and how bad it feels. Convincing? :002_ssmile:

Carolina has, as expected, been the most represented team. They have a ton of fans down here. Duke did as well, but they seemed to have disappeared for some reason;)
State has a good amount, and Florida State had a good turnout seeing as they are the defacto home team. We had a really good turnout as well. Our section was rocking in the first half. Maryland also had a really loud section as well, but again, they were gone by Thursday night.
Miami was pathetic. The tournament was in Florida, and they had maybe 50 fans there. I guess they care more about spring football practice, but to have the tournament in Florida and have that kind of showing was embarrasing.
Georgia Tech, Wake, and Virginia Tech had decent showings. Clemson not so much. BC, considering they still don't get the full allotment of tickets until next year, had a surprisingly strong turnout. They had a group of students in the 300 section (maybe 50 or 60 of them) that stood and cheered and chanted the whole game. Louder than the entire rest of their section.
Anyways, I expect it to be about 50 percent Carolina fans, and 50 percent other fans today. So, everyone will be rooting against the favorite Heels today, and rooting for the underdog WolfPack in the later game.
I'm rooting for a Carolina-State final, because a) it'll get rid of the new ACC teams, b) that would give State a chance to get in the NCAA's and give the ACC 8 bids and c) my brother is a Heels fan and seeing as MD and UVa are out, one of the teams we came down here to see might as well be playing on Sunday.

They just need two wins over creampuffs to earn the Sweet 16 and validate the season (as do the Twerps)! :)

No doubt about it. They've really played well these two days, and I know everyone is noticing the defense. 7 more!

I'm rooting for State, because I'd love to see the ACC get 8 teams in the Dance.
Glad to see VaTech and BC go out today, we got some real ACC teams in the final this year.

No worries Beaner.... Like some of us have been saying, UNC has had this tourny locked down from the start.
It would be a shame if they got all cocky and bowed out early in the big dance now.;)

Yea, hopefully State gives us a game today, BC and FSU offered nothing...I'm looking forward to the selection show and still am holding out some small hope for a #1 seed.

If they win, I certainly think they deserve a 1 seed, but I think it might be better off for you guys to get a 2 seed. I feel like by getting a 2 seed, it could give them a little chip on their shoulder to help them cruise through the tourney.
Anyways, about to leave for the arena. Gotta root for State, get that 8th ACC team in the dance!

Wow. What a great game. NC State played fantastic, but Carolina just has too much firepower.
Congrats beaner, and ND. You guys deserve a Number 1 seed.
