I hope the best for Jack Cust.
After looking at their roster changes in the last couple of days, I am really really impressed with the Athletics and slowly starting to become a fan.
Acquiring Denorfia, Langerhans (sans), Snelling, and Cust in a matter of a few days to help the team is pretty impressive.

Should be interesting to see how he does. The main reason I soured on him was due to his mediocre year at Ottawa in 2004. He was a little better in 2005, but he still only had a .438 slugging percentage. He really came back strong last year, for whatever reason. The funny thing is that if he hit like he did in his 73 at bats with us in 2003, he'd be our best hitter...

Would that be the home run every 19 at bats or the .429 OBP you're confused about?

He hits bombs, walks a ton and collects a minimum salary. .429 career minor league OBP, 500+ slugging (albeit in some good hitting environments).

Those are Minor league numbers though, right? why is he a career minor leaguer? If he's so valuable then why have so many teams given up on him. There has to be a reason, it can't just be that every poster on here is smarter than the GM's all over the league. I don't wish the man any ill will, and do appreciate that he has impressive minor league stats. I just don't understand all the attention he's gotten over the years.

Because his defense is indifferent, and being labeled a "career minor leaguer" is kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Yea, no doubt about that. The problem in Oakland is that Swisher will have to DH for now because he's still hurt. When he gets back to the OF, maybe Cust can play until Piazza returns.

This should be good. I've heard legendary stories about the Cust's first go-round...glad I'm here for round 2.
Ah yes... the one they call "Cust" goes to Oakland... and the one called "Knott" comes back for his revenge... I foresaw this... it is DESTINY.
The two dejected AAAAers will lead their respective teams in OPS, HR, and RBI. In the ALCS, they will meet upon the pitching mound at Oriole Park, whereupon they will kung fu fight for 40 days and 40 nights to determine who is the better of the all-hit no-field semi-major leaguers. Only after Cust trips over his own shoelaces will Knott vanquish him with his Splintered Bat of a Thousand Doubles. Orioles win the Series 3-2.

Ya, I don't know about you guys, but Orioles' fans fascination with the guy never made sense to me. I mean, he only had an .878 OPS when he was with us. So what if his minor league line is .285/.429/.514. It's not like we're paying millions of dollars for a guy to do what Cust could do, have an .800 OPS and not run or play defense.

For many, baseball has become a world of numbers. A world filled with useless letters like OPS, ERA, WHIP or XGTSZQY. To those that clutch their decimal filled spreadsheets and calculators with the religious fervor or a born again accountant, the game of baseball has become a never ending duel of meaningless statistics. And with each equation, loudly and arrogantly proclaimed to have the ability to predict the future, baseball becomes a heartless and confusing exercise with loyalty to only the almighty numeral. For the apostles that pray at the altar of the decimal, baseball is a vain attempt to measure the human spirit. Unless your name is Jesus, you do not have the ability to use numbers to predict what a player will do in the future. And if you can, call me, and I will pay your way to Las Vegas.
Soon the journey will begin……… for the hyenas of hate, the time has come to whimper in the corner. Sweet Destiny is approaching……
And on a cool October evening, on a green pasture of competition, a long suffering franchise will again walk down its chosen path. And on that night, in a final irony, the chosen one will again wear an Orioles uniform and the final appointment with fate will be fulfilled. The Mighty Cust will be the fulfillment of all the hope, faith, and prayers of those that still believe baseball is a game that is decided not by numbers but by that which is not measurable…………the human heart.
I have just as much chance of getting it right as someone who says they can see the future based on a bunch of stats of The Mighty Cust from the minor leagues. But I have one big advantage……… I know that baseball is not a game played by calculators, but is played by humans and the HEART of The Mighty Cust will take him to his final destiny.
Behold the birth of a legend.

I sound derisive because I am. It is the height of arrogance to use numbers to justify the ability to usefully predict the future of human activity. Many, many people have used billions and billions of dollars and an untold number of Cray Supercomputers engaged in sophisticated equations and various offshoots of Chaos Theory to try to predict the future. Imagine the incredible savings in energy, time, resources and money if Wal-Mart could predict how many batteries will be sold in Tampa, Florida Store #23123 each hour. Imagine how much money could be made if such theories could predict stock market prices, the outcome of a war between Greece and Turkey or any other human endeavor.
Bill James and others have provided a great, possibly revolutionary, impact on baseball. It is great and often enlightening to use numbers to examine the past. They provide a unique look into past performance. But too often, I see those same numbers being used to justify future claims of success or failure. You, nor anyone else, can do that.

No one tries to use stats to "predict the future." We use them to get a general idea of what could likely happen given a lot of evidence. And that's as good as "predicting the future" is gonna get in this case.
What you're saying is that we should all basically stop discussing the possibilities of the future because there's no way to truly know it. I don't know why, but you turned a thread almost completely supporting the one player you seem to care about at all into a pointless rant that has nothing to do with Jack Cust.

Did not mean to sound like a rant. I do not understand why it is called a rant if a disagree. I am trying to say that for many people like me, baseball is not about stats. Jack Cust hit a three-run homer off Fernando Cabrera with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give the A's a 10-7 win over the Indians on Sunday.
Barry Bonds, David Ortiz, Vladimir Guerrero... There are some major league hitters you just can't let beat you in the late innings of a close game. Chief among them all, however, is almost certainly Jack Cust. Cust would have gotten his chance years ago, but every GM in baseball knew that to use him was to risk shaking the very foundation of the game. That Cust has had to wait until 28 for regular playing time will probably prevent him from reaching 1,000 career homers, which is a shame. Still, 500 is very much in reach, perhaps by the end of the season.
Haha. I nearly choked on the the beefaroni I was eating when I read this. Classy stuff:)

But to be fair let's look at some teams we'd all agree are better run that the O's...
all the A's got for him was nothing.
all the Padres got for him was nothing.
The A's got a second chance and it worked out, but much like the Orioles before this year both the Athletic and Padre organizations didn't think he was worth holding on to.

I think I might change my opinion on Jack Cust. He may actually have a chance at some staying power.
I was listening to ESPN Radio about Cust and for the first time heard about him suffering from carpal tunnel problems in *both* wrists. He had surgery before the 2006 season which goes a long way towards explaining a resurgence in power. With the carpal tunnel injury Cust was powerless and not a very useful piece to a major league team. With the injury "fixed" and his power back he could be a useful piece. This makes a lot more sense about the lack of power Cust showed in the O's organization than the bogus excuses I've seen made for him like it's cold in Ottawa or we screwed up his approach etc...
Makes one wonder why the Orioles failed to diagnose the problem and get it fixed. This is one situation where the O's medical personnel should be the one's being second guessed instead of the front office.

The funny thing is that we could have a guy like that. 3, actually, but they are all rotting in Norfolk... and some are injured... but still.

The cost wasn't exactly steep -- a modest sum of cash -- because Cust had a clause in his contract allowing him to leave if another team offered him a chance to play in the majors. A deal was struck the next day.
"He does what we like hitters to do," Beane said.
The Orioles would have liked Cust a lot more if he had been more aggressive. His patience allowed him to work deep into counts, but he often fell behind in them and would strike out. The bat needed to leave his shoulder more, something the Orioles kept stressing until they finally gave up on him.
So, we could have had Cust back at no cost. Also, I like how the Orioles claim they like patient hitters but then kick them to the curb when they take to many walks

I think it all goes back to health. He supposedly was a power hitter when he was acquired but he put up a couple of powerless years in Ottawa. I believe that because they failed to diagnose the wrist problems they wrongly blamed an extremly patient approach on the lack of power production. If he was hitting 30 HR a year at Ottawa I suspect noone would have been questioning his approach.

It does go to show you that it seems as if the Orioles do not value the walk as much as they should.
I would bet the Orioles would prefer a 300 hitter with a 340 OBP than a 260 hitter with a 380 OBP.

You could be right, but when it comes to Cust, rightly or wrongly I think they'd of preferred the extra .100 on his SLG pct over that extra .040 on his OBP. I believe that they were reaching to come up for reasons for the pathetic .425ish SLG percentages and because they failed to recognize the wrist problem they blamed approach as the reason for the power outage.

Cust has 16 walks in 42 at bats by the way.
He could go 0-50 in his next 50 plate appearances and still have a .315 OBP

I can't wait for the Oakland series. I predict he hits game winning homeruns against us on 3 consecutive nights, but falls on the basepath during his trots and never scores the winning runs. We literally split the series with three tie games.

Why care about hitting 30 at Ottawa when he could hit 30 this year in Oakland? ;)
Hit his 8th last night....unreal. It'll be interesting to see how he adjusts once the league figures him out...

When he was in the Orioles system with bad wrists he was a powerless shell of the hitter he is today. Until he got to the organization / doctors that determined he needed surgery he had no chance of being a contributor at the major league level. Wouldn't you agree that it is a shame that the problem with his wrists wasn't discovered while he was still property of the Orioles?

But yeah, it is a shame....however something tells me we'd have screwed it up with him anyway.
Wrists aside, in the short stint he was here, he still got on base at a good clip...
