The Sun has a story up that says Jared Gaither was declared academically ineligible for the upcoming season. Wonderful news, huh?

And that was today's breaking news from www.NotAtAllAShock.com...:p

Wonder if someone will forfeit a 2008 pick for him in the supplemental draft?

Wonder if someone will forfeit a 2008 pick for him in the supplemental draft? What are the rules about picking someone in the supp. draft? Do you lose your first rounder or something? Man this is a huge loss with Woods leaving early too to join the Army. The OL depth just got really thin...

As I understand it, they do rounds like the real draft. You can either skip your pick (like most teams do) or pick a player. So, they would go through round one, and if no one wanted to make a pick, they would go to round two, and so forth. However, whatever round you pick someone in is the round you forfeit in next year's draft (at least your regular pick).

So, if the Ravens drafted him in the fourth round of the supplemental draft, they would lose their 2008 fourth-round pick.

Great.

Like B-Terp alluded, this comes as no surprise to anyone, especially those within the program who have pretty much prepared to go without Gaither since the end of last season. That said, the OT depth chart now consists of 2part-time players from 2006, a converted DT backing them up, followed by a bunch of walk-ons and true freshmen. Steffy/Portis/Turner and Co. might want to take out insurance policies.

BTW, you're correct on how the NFL supplemental draft works.

Is he close enough to fix the problem over the summer?

Is he close enough to fix the problem over the summer?

Apparently Keith Cavanaugh of the Terrapin Times is reporting that this is indeed the case. If he passes all of his summer courses, he will be eligible and Gaither is feeling confident that he can do it. We'll see what happens, I really hope he does re-qualify since our O-line depth is so thin.

I don't get it. What is so hard about going to class? Show up for class, make an honest effort and you'll at least get a "C". C'mon, its not that hard.

C'mon, its not that hard. From what I've heard, he thought he was a lock 1st round pick in the draft based on what some were tellling him early in the season. When his pre draft reports came back from the league after he officially entered his name in the mix, they pegged him much lower on the board.

It still doesn't excuse going to class (especially when you have been given a full ride), but I guess I can kind of imagine what he was thinking seeing all those $$$ signs.

Actually, it was more before the season that people were feeding him that stuff. Everyone was assuming he would continue the development he showed during 2005 when he didn't give up a single sack as the LT for most of the season. But then he started having some issues. First, he lost the LT job when Heyer returned from the ACL injury and didn't exactly embrace the idea of switching to RT. Then Fridge suspended him for the first game for violating a team rule. He never really worked his way out of Fridge's doghouse all season and split a lot of the RT reps with Dane Randolph........Randolph even started the Champs Bowl game. All of that together really lowered his draft stock.

Smart move on his part. Sitting out an entire year hoping to regain his form in 2008 and waiting until the 2009 NFL draft probably would not have improved his stock. Now the question becomes, does anyone take him and what round pick do they use? I wouldn't mind seeing the Ravens take a late round chance on him........especially since they're likely to get a decent compensation pick for losing Adalius to make up for it.

Here's a name from the Terps' past that will also be in the supplemental draft.

Anyways, here is some info on Gaither and the rest of the candidates for the Supplemental Draft.

Apparently, he will easily be the first pick though it is still unclear exactly what round he will go in. Good luck Jared! We could have used you one more year in CP though!!!

Picked by the Ravens in the 5th round per PDog!!!!!

The Sun confirms it. (http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/football/bal-ravens712,0,615176.story?coll=bal-home-headlines)

I like the pick. They used what we all hope will be a very late pick in the 5th round next year for a high ceiling player at a premium position who needs development time. Worst case scenario, we used a late 5th rounder on a bust in a draft where we figure to make up for the loss with a high compensatory pick for losing Adailus. Best case scenario.........we just drafted J.O.'s replacement!

On rivals, it says Maryland signed their 7th football recruit for 2008. I can't figure out who it is though. Anyone got any info?

Anyone got any info?Kerry Boykins (http://maryland.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?sport=1&pr_key=49962) - A WR out of the Tidewater area. I believe he went to the same HS as current Terp Brian Whitmore who helped recruit him as well.

Another very good commit for Fridge. He gives us 2 good looking WR prospects in this class already with Dorsey also on board.

Make it 8. They also got RJ Dill (http://maryland.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?sport=1&pr_key=58733) - a 3 star OL from PA.

Wow, 3 pops in less than 24 hours for Fridge and staff.

Verbal #9 is a real sleeper RB whose numbers from last year are ridiculous considering he shared the spotlight with one of the most highly sought after players in the nation in Greg Little.

Nice, Friegen is really hitting the recruiting trail. On Terps Sports Report, it says there is even more good news to come this week. Im not a member so i can't read what it says. Anyone who is a member, post what it says on this site. Thx
