Saw this last night, and it definitely exceeded my expectations. I'm not sure where I put it in the Die Hard pantheon, I'd have to see the second one again to make that judgment. However, for what it is, its fantastic. It was one of the best pure action movies I've seen. If you are able to suspend your disbelief a little bit and just enjoy the ride, you'll have a fantastic time too. Lots of intense scenes and great one liners.
Ranking it was harder for me to do, because for a "popcorn" movie or whatever its awesome, but obviously not comparable to a truly great movie. I settled on 3 stars.

Question:
In the trailers and TV spots, it seems like John McClane has become something of an "extrodinary man," a la the action heroes of the bulk of the 80s. Is this a result of editing? The major appeal of the original, and one of the reasons it has gained recognition as one of the best (if not THE best) action film of all time, is that John McClane is an everyman. A guy who, if given the choice, would rather sit out the action but is put in to situations where he has to step up. The trailers are full of crazy stunts, and if you think about it, the only really crazy stunt he pulls in the original is the firehose jump. Well, maybe the duct thing, where he tries to hide by dangling from the strap of the machine gun he's got on him. But of course, the sequels keep getting more over the top crazy stunts, that's the rules of sequels.

I am very, very happy that this movie is getting good reviews. I was worried about the PG-13 rating and the director, but it seems like my worries are moot. I am going to see this Sunday. Can't wait.

I saw it yesterday and I loved it. Non-stop action. From five minutes into the movie until the credits roll there is so much action I don't know how they fit it all in 2 hours. The Kevin Smith cameo was very funny. The plot was decent and somewhat believable. The acting was great (Tim Olyphant is an awesome bad guy). The script was good but not great. 3.5 Stars from me. It was definitely the best movie I've seen this summer so far. I am probably going to go see it again this weekend with a few friends.

I saw it tonight. I thought it was very good. John McClane really reminded me of Jack Bauer in this movie. I also thought that Justin Long was very good in this movie.

I saw it today. Wasn't too impressed. For one, it was freaking PG-13. The Die Hard movies are not PG-13 films. Second, I found the plot to be all over the place. They were running around and doing things but nothing ever seemed to connect together smoothly, unlike all the other Die Hard movies. The villain was lame, a computer hacker. Oooooo. Justin Long wasn't as annoying as I thought he'd be, but I'd much rather have McClane partnered with someone like Samuel L. Jackson, someone who can give it back to him a bit. Finally, I thought the action was too over the top. Yeah fighting on the airplane wing in Part 2 was a little crazy but everything in this film was just too much. I like my action movies grounded in reality (like the Die Hard movies are) and this had its head in the summer movie popcorn clouds.
Also, I hated the government parts. They were meaningless. They showed the FBI talking about stuff and none of it seemed to go anywhere. At least in Part I they were all a-holes and they lended something to the plot. I did like the Agent Johnson reference though.
Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. Willis still owned and the action sequences while somewhat generic from the PG-13 rating, were still shot nicely.
And let me leave you with this... the movie was mostly shot in Baltimore, standing in for Washington DC. Understandable. But why couldn't they use the REAL Baltimore when they were really in Baltimore? I didn't know 695 had a top an bottom highway bridge and I didn't know you could see the Blue Ridge Mountains from the Inner Harbor!!!
Also, it was funny to hear Woodlawn referenced so much. We all know that top-secret bases are stationed in Woodlawn... I bet they're right next to Security Mall!
I guess I should have dialed down my IQ a bit but the DH movies are usally half-way smart and this movie was just pretty silly from start to finish. Definitely the weakest of the films and didn't feel like a DH flick.

Yeah, I agree. At first I gave the movie 3.5 stars but I just saw it again last night and I'd definitely give it a 4 now. The writing was better than I had originally thought.

I saw it tonight and it was a really good movie. The action was so over the top, but it was cool because they really didn't take themselves that seriously. Half the time McClane would do this crazy stuff and was in awe that he could actually do it. Just a really fun action movie, with a lot of laughs.

Amazing. Very funny and unbelievable action too. I really think the villian was as good as Alan Rickman in the original. At first he seemed a bit stereotypical but when he started matching wits with Willis and being a complete wiseass to his own people as well I found him very entertaining. I really liked the cyberterrorism aspect, especially the video with all the Presidents mixed together and that stuff; they were just computer geeks but boy could they do some damage.
Willis, as always, was amazing. Does anyone know if they're making a fifth?

I enjoyed the movie very much and gave it a 3.5. I will say though that it did NOT feel like a Die Hard movie. Other than the name of the film and the "John McClain" name for Willis, he acted more like a superhero than he did in the first three films. Definitely a must see and a DVD purchase in three months!

Willis said he would like to do a fifth if the script is good!

I just saw it for the second time. Very good movie all though I disagree with what was said earlier about Olyphant. I couldn't stand him, and not from the persepective that he's the bad guy and you are supposed to dislike him. I just thought his acting left something to be desired. Everything else about the movie was great, from Willis to his kick ass daughter and especially Justing Long (who did a fabulous job).
There was also a scene with very bad editing where nothing of what Justin Long said matched up with what was shown. It was literally about 15 seconds long. Not sure how that slipped through their editing staff.
All in all, great, great action flick.

There were a bunch of scenes like this to re-dub the language that was used in the original version of the film which was to be rated R. After the film was finished, FOX wanted a PG-13 movie so scenes were edited to trim down the language and violence. I'd be really interested to watch the unrated version if/when it comes out on DVD because I wasn't too high on the theatrical version.

Ah I see. It was very badly noticable though lol.
