I know this organization is painfully thin on hitters and position players. But I just saw the line on Lincecum's last start:

7 IP 3 hits 0 ER 0 BB 12 K's.

I almost did a double-take.

Bear in mind Lincecum is mowing down hitters in the BIG LEAGUES, whereas Rowell, IF he ever starts hitting again, will still be a few years away from the Bigs.

I don't think he is moving down hitters in the NL. The last 2 starts have been pretty good, but then 4 starts prior too have been not so good. But he is in the ML and Rowell isn't!! Also you have to understant that Lincecum is 4 year older then Rowell. So I think we should give Rowell a break in that he still has plenty of time to develop.

San Diego and Arizona's offense (12th and 11th in runs in 2007) does not strike fear in me...

The only thing that is abundantly certain is that this topic is premature. There's a long way to go. For example, many teams worried about Lincecum's health/stamina/durability. We don't know yet.

But then again, the goal is to made the best decision based on the best info at that time. Wht happens after the fact is sorta irrelevant (other than it offers some insight into the quality of their decision making and/or information gathering).

You're killing me, Doc. How many threads a year do you start on how bad our hitting is? So we draft what many consider the best hitter in the draft last year, and now you're second-guessing it?

Like Baltimoron said, it's way too early to judge either way. Lincecum looks to me like an arm injury just waiting to happen, although I hope I'm wrong about that.

It's way too early to tell.

In 2001, Mauer was selected ahead of Prior. Prior was in the majors by 2002 and had the Cubs on the brink of the World Series in 2003. In 2003, Prior went 18-6, had a K/9 of 10.43, a K/BB of 4.90, and an era+ of 175. Meanwhile, Mauer was still in the minors, posting OPSs of .785 at A-, .807 at A+ and .853 at AA.

Who wouldn't have taken Prior at that time?

Of course nobody would trade Mauer for Prior today.

That's not to say that Lincecum will suffer arm troubles, although many are concerned about his build and his overuse in college. And we don't know how Rowell will turn out.

But I'm just saying that it's premature to say at this point in time.

His future is gonna be as a closer....sorry but you don't draft a closer in the top 10 of the draft.

But it's not premature to say the Linc is better than people thought he would be. The same can not be said for Rowell at this point, IMO.

Injuries can happen to both hitters and position players. At this point, to say that future injuries can ultimately be a huge factor in which player is better is, IMO, skirting the real issue (unless a team did not draft Linc specifically due to injury concerns).

Rowell could still turn out to be a top, top player, but I would trade Rowell for Linc in a second if given the opportunity. IMO, from that point of view, I'd have to say we should have taken Linc - though I note that there are probably half a dozen teams who picked ahead of us who should have taken Linc.

Should we have picked Chris Marrero over Rowell? He's the same age, hit .882 OPS in the Sally League, was promoted and is putting up an .824 OPS in the Carolina League.

Answer: ask me again in 5 years. Same with Lincecum.
