I didn't watch it, but here is a rundown from G4tv.com

- New light gun called the Wii Zapper ... will bef or use with most/all FPS games and will cost $19.99.

- Super Smash Bros. Brawl release date: Dec. 3rd.

- Demo of Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass.

- New Wii channel where you can send your Mii's to be evaluated and voted upon by others.

- Mario Strikers: Charged, Madden NFL 08 and FIFA 08 will "soon" be online.

- Mario Kart for the Wii ... coming in early 2008. Also comes with a Steering Wheel.

- Brain Age 2 release date: Aug. 20th.

- Super Mario Galaxy realse date: Nov. 12th.

- something called the "Wii Balance Board". A wireless, weight-sensitive mat that comes with Wii Fit. A fitness training game.

Nothing really new, but again, I didn't actually watch it. I think G4tv.com has the whole press conference archived, so I may just go back and watch it later.

The idea behind the Wii was great but so far the execution has been awful. The best game to come out for it was Wii Sports and nobody had to pay for that (aside from buying the console). Zelda was crap, as has been all Zelda games since Zelda for Super Nintendo (I know I'll be alone in that opinion, but they're all the same). Even if you disagree with me, the Wii mote was barely needed for that game. The biggest release recently is RE4, just a port from the Gamecube and again, the Wii mote didn't bring much new to the table.

The problem with the Wii is there's really only one company making games specifically with the Wii in mind and that's Nintendo. That also means that most of the best thought-out games for the Wii are going to be Mario/Zelda games or just geared towards children. Everything else can be found on a different system with superior graphics.

I thought the Wii remote was going to revolutionize console gaming (and it was what got me back into console gaming) but it's seeming more and more like the only reason to buy a Wii is for the party games, which I have no interest in whatsoever.

I have a hell of a time with the controls. It's hard for me to keep still when I'm gaming, so the game(s) camera usually winds up going haywire on me. Heh.

I think this is a problem that's going to come back and haunt them later. It's crazy that the Wii is outselling the 360 2:1, yet the 360 accounts for 2/3 of the console games being bought. It amazes me they've sold almost 2 million consoles in about 8 months, yet the number Wii games to PS3 games being sold is almost 1:1. That's just sad.

This is what I was afraid of (and why I've held off so far on getting one). For all of it's innovation, the only good Wii games are coming from Nintendo. Everyone else is just slapping on Wiimote controls to older games (Resident Evil 4, Far Cry, etc.). This is what killed Nintendo's consoles in the past and apparently, they haven't learned yet. It will be interesting to see where the Wii is around this time at next years E3. If they don't make a concerted effort to work with 3rd party companies to bring new (good) games game to the Wii, I'm not sure how long this console will last.

LOL Just read this in July's issue of Game Informer.

I could make Halo. It's not that I couldn't design that game. It's just that I choose not to. One thing about my game design is that I never try to look for what people want and then try to make that game design.

That's a quote from Shigeru Miyamoto. I couldn't help but laugh when I read this.

I'm trying to envision magic mushrooms and goombas in Halo multiplayer. Heh.

I guess it's because you really have to be creative to make an innovative game utilizing the Wii's capabilities to the fullest. And it probably also means that any game like that for the Wii, will only ever be for the Wii, and not something that they can easily port over to the other consoles. So the companies could focus on making really awesome games for the Wii that only Wii users will ever buy, thus excluding a large part of the market, or they can make a good game for all three systems.

Being innovative these days just doesn't pay off I guess.

That's probably true to an extent. But the fact that the Wii is so far outselling both of the other next gen consoles will hopefully get more third-party developers looking at the console and making games for it. Especially since once Mario comes out, maybe a new Metroid or something, the console sales will keep going. (That might be enough to get me to buy one finally.)

The Wii is more than just the same games with prettier graphics, which makes me want to see it do well. But I have to agree, there's almost no reason to rush out and get one yet. (But then I feel the same way about the PS3, and of course that costs twice as much.) Hopefully by Christmas it will be worth it.
