The new SNY Network up here is showing entire broadcasts of some of the 1969 WS games. That was about 5 yrs before I really started to follow the O's. The grainy black & white film seems more like 1949. I know this has been talked about forever, but how did that stacked team lose to the Mets? I realize NY had some great young arms, but it still amazes me.

The classic example of how anything can happen in a short series. I was 12 years old when that series was played and it sticks in my craw even now.

Brooks Robinson told me this series was the biggest disappointment of his career.

He felt this was the best team he ever played on.

Those darn Mets shocked the world that year....and it didn't just happen to us once in a matter of a year, it happened twice. Just ask the Baltimore Colts....

I was -2 in '69, so I only got to read about it later. I'm pretty sure this was the thing that made me reevaluate the idea (when I was maybe 12) that the World Series winner was really the best team. If the 109-win O's didn't win it, well, just maybe the WS isn't a perfect indicator of which team was the best.

I was 9 at the time and had just started to follow all the Baltimore teams.

What I remember most about the series, was that every time it seemed
we got a key hit, it was caught. Tommy Agee made alot of really good
plays in crucial moments. Swaboda's catch hurt.

109 wins and then lost to miracle mets. Very dissapointing.

Didn't the then-Baltimore Bullets lose to the Knicks in the NBA Finals that year, too? I have no idea how much of an upset that was, but no one should wonder why we hate New York....;)

1969 was a bad year for Baltimore sports fans. The Bullets lost to the NY Knickerbockers in the E. Div Semi Finals. The Colts and the O's lost to NY teams in the Super Bowl and the World Series. I was in Vietnam for the Super Bowl and got up at 2am local to listen to the game on the radio. It was a very bad let down to hear our Colts get beaten. I got home early in Oct and my father got tickets for game 2 of the series. It was a glorious day, weather wise. Upper deck, left field. We lost 2-1. We didn't realize it then, but the O's would lose three more in NY and the best team in O's history would lose the series to the mets. A bad year for sports in Baltimore. Never liked NY teams and still don't.

I started following the Os in 1964 thanks to my dad. Yes, losing in 1969 hurt...so did 1971. But the one that really sticks in my crawl is 1979. Willie Stargell was like 39 years old and played unbelieveably well, his OPS for the series was 1233. I never could get over how we let an old guy beat us. As I grew older I realized how great the man was.
