Why on earth would you give Young a 2/10 extension?
As rotoworld says, trade him and sign a similar player in the offseason.
Completely moronic.

Plus they already have a good first basemen in Nick Johnson (who was signed to a 3 year deal last season). If they are seriously expect Dmitri to play LF (which I assume is the plan), I hope they enjoy atrocious fielding and more injuries.
I think Bowden's drinking problem is worse than we feared

Or maybe this is fairly strong indictment of Johnson's rehab and prognosis.
Johnson visited a hip specialist in New York just before the all-star break, and he had a cortisone shot in his hip to relieve pain there last week. He has returned to taking ground balls and has taken swings in the batting cages, but still doesn't have full strength in his hip, where a rod was inserted into his leg last September.

And some people think that the Nationals have a competent-enough front office to pass the Orioles.

Not like passing the Orioles is any great feat.

That's the point.
I thought with your opinion of both Bowden and the Orioles you would get that :p

Add Nick Johnson to the list of O's possibilities next year. Yes, he's more injury prone than Dave Segui, but he's a heckuva 2-way player when healthy.

This isn't really that bad of a move. Dmitri is an instant fan-favorite in Washington, and currently their best player. For his production, 2/10 is a steal. Nick Johnson won't be back this year, probably not till the middle of next year. And Young has earned 1B until that time, at least.
There has been lots of talk of teams' reluctance to deal prospects, and I doubt the Nats could've gotten much for Young. Surely no team would give up Kearns/Lopez type players for him (the fact that Bowden pulled that off last year refutes the title of this thread handily; or just means the Reds GM should be institutionalized).
I think there are a ton of comparisons between Young and Millar right now. Both 1B are currently unlikely leaders of their teams, cheap and producing, and both seemingly should be dealt at the deadline. But I think keeping Millar far outweighs what we'd get in return (his 'leadership', currently producing, and he's just a fun guy to watch), and you could say literally the exact same thing about Dmitri.

I think the Reds are still trying to go after Bowden for misrepresenting the pitchers in that deal, so if anything it makes him more of an embarrassment.
Notice how we aren't signing Millar for two years at five million per.

How much have Millar's 1-year deals been worth?
The Reds would like to change that deal, but nothing is going to come of that. Bowden played them for chumps.
I'm not saying I'd rather have Bowden as the O's GM, but for all the complaining about the O's lack of moves, he's done the complete opposite, and for the most part it has worked.

First they fail to trade Soriano, now this.
Serioulsy, I never want to hear how much better the Nationals' FO is better than ours ever again.
This is beyond stupid.
It COLD work out for them, but it is highly unlikely.

The Nats took a chance this year on Young and he has lead the NL in batting for most of the season at the MLB min salary.
The O's handed Huff $20 million for 3 seasons. Even if Young falls completely on his face the next two years he will probably end up with better numbers than Huff at half the cost.
I hate to say it, but advantage D.C. front office.

I see both sides of this. I fully expected that the Nats would be dealing Young and possibly Belliard. It appears they've decised to hang on to a couple of fan favorites as a goodwill gesture. They aren't paying either diddly so it doesn't matter much.
Long term, though, Young is an AL kind of player. Born to DH.
The natives down there are also starting to wonder if Nick is ever going to be healthy again.
Without bringing the Oriole comparison into it, the Bowden regime seems to have yet to really chart a course. Maybe they will come fall.

LOL... the O's are about the last team you'd want to hold up as a model for not giving mid-tier, 2-3 year contracts out to middling, past-their prime vets.
The O's are paying a lot more for a lot less production than 2/10 for Young represents.

Because the Orioles do worse it's OK to do something dumb?
