I saw the theatrical trailer and i thought it looked funny, the R rated trailer made it look even better and is what I was thinking it's going to be like. This movie definitely looks good.

Saw it last night with my 16-year-old step brother who said it was the greatest movie he's ever seen. That said, I really enjoyed it too. It didn't have one of those crazy hilarious moments, but it was solid all the way through. The thing I love about the Apatow/Rogen gang is that their comedy is plausible and a most of it is in the details. It's the funny comments and looks where you really get the good laughs rather than on some absurd dream sequence where the main character is riding a unicorn through some cartoon rainbow world. Not that I don't like Anchorman, but you know what I'm saying. Anyway, it was right up there with Knocked Up for me, which is saying a lot. I'll buy it when it comes out on DVD.

Saw it today. Very funny. Not overly funny like 40 Year Old Virgin or Knocked Up, but it was very funny. I found Seth's pent-up frustrated anger to be tiresome, but Evan and McLovin were the highlights.

Lots of subtle funny lines, too many to remember.

How can something be "overly funny"?

I liked it, but didn't love it. Maybe I had set my expectations too high, but it just didn't click with me on every level. Seth in particular I found to be annoying and tiresome. I enjoyed both 40 Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up more than this.

However, it's definitely still worth checking out. I just expected more.

I'll re-post this from another board I post on...

There was a lot to like about this film, but a lot that left me cold, too.

I enjoyed the friendship angle, how Evan slowly distances himself from Seth's boorishness and finally berates Seth for holding him back - and in the end they acknowledge their love for each other again. A lot of the little one-liners were great, like Cera's lines about the terrorist video game and wishing that women were turned on by boners in public. The cock drawings, both the actual drawings and the concept itself, were unbelievably hilarious. I was in pain.

I got very little from the whole McLovin + cops storyline. McLovin's faux-cool-black-guy act was really annoying, and I don't think he added much to the story. The cops seemed to be held up as charming Peter Pan-types, but I just felt like they were idiots. I don't know what the filmmakers were trying to tell us there, but what I got from it was "These guys are losers; go to Dartmouth and don't be like them".

The girl storylines didn't do much for me, either. Becca and Evan seemed like a plausible match, but it doesn't ring true when she claims that she's wanted to get with him for a long time. It seems like they just met earlier that day, and that Evan was the one who had a crush on her, but not vice versa. Ditto for Seth and Jules; while, oddly, the match seemed plausible - despite the obvious physical differences, Jules had that serious, sober persona that could attract her to a loud, brash guy like Seth - it's tough to see the transition from initial attraction to actually wanting to be with the person. There's a lot of character and relationship development that goes undone, in favor of the pointless cop subplot. McLovin and Nicola just make no sense whatsoever.

Anyway, it was a decent movie, but I was pretty disappointed because I was expecting so much.

Also, Michael Cera rules. His was by far the most likeable character, and the kid has some serious comic chops. Hill's character got really irritating; as someone else noted, he was just complaining about stuff the entire movie. It got tiresome.

I can't argue with much of this, but I thought the point of the cops was to show that much of time, the authority figures are even more clueless and immature than the kids. I mean, the whole movie revolves around the fact that the main characters can't buy alcohol, but that brawling old guy, cops on duty, and the various ne'er-do-wells at the other party can drink as much as they want. And Seth Rogen's character supplied the line that made me laugh the hardest (although I think I was the only one in the theater laughing): "You have to go to a spin class, or farmers market, or a pumpkin patch, depending on the time of year."

It might have worked better if the cops hadn't said that they knew all along McLovin wasn't 21. Then they could just have been idiots, rather than being weird guardian angel-types. I also would have preferred if the last scene had been cut, and it had just ended with the guys in their sleeping bags. In such situations, Judd Apatow should just ask himself, "what would we have done on Freaks and Geeks?"

Speaking of which, always nice to see Martin Starr pop up again... and the menstruating fiancee was the main girl from Undeclared.

I didn't think that was really the point, and isn't that a false point anyway? In the real world, cops who drive drunk and incinerate their car will get discovered and fired, right? If they were trying to show that adults aren't always wiser than kids, they could have done a much better job of it (Beavis & Butthead and South Park come to mind).

There was a lot that just didn't work for me and too much suspension of disbelief. I liked Knocked Up because it struck a good balance between reality and slightly fantastical happenings; Superbad just didn't ring as true for me.

Maybe I should just stop thinking and laugh, but Apatow has raised the bar so high for himself with his previous work, it's impossible. I hold him to a higher standard.

I think this was the type of movie where you should just stop thinking and laugh compared to Knocked Up which was more realistic and plot driven, however not nearly as funny imo.

Superbad isn't supposed to be taken seriously. Obviously cops don't hang out all night with underaged kids and shoot their guns at stop signs. It was just supposed to be funny, which is was in spades.

As a sidenote, I actually know someone from my dorm I think sophomore year of college who had the exact same thing happen to him with the "stain" on the leg of his pants. It was disgusting then and the face and gag/dry-heaving that Seth was doing in that scene was hysterical.

I thought the funniest thing in the entire movie was the face Michael Cera makes after he accidentally punched Becca in the boob.

I thought the "bro'in out" section of Knocked Up, where Rogen and Rudd eat 'shrooms, was way funnier than anything in Superbad.

That said, again, Cera is a budding genius. He's reached the "I will watch anything he's in, without question" level, for me.

I agree with this. I hadn't seen anything on this kid before I saw this movie, but now I think I'm going to have to see anything that hes in from now on. He's absolutely hilarious. Best character of the movie to me.
