While waiting to hear the Wieters signing, I looked up a few players eligible for next year's draft. I'm pretty sure that Pedro Alverez will be gone by the time the O's pick, but I would love for them to have a shot at Brett Wallace (ASU). There is no way to predict the draft this far out, but he sure seems like an interesting player to plug into the 1B slot!!

Not arguing your selection, because he is a solid player, but how many 1B do we need? I know we can't have enough but if all pan out some one needs to be traded, I quess??

It's always fun to look ahead and Wallace is one of many fine players expected to be early picks.

I like what MLB has done with the first-round draft change, the one in which teams receive a pick in the following draft, one pick after their original number slot.

For example, if we failed to sign Wieters, who was the #5 pick in the first round, we would receive the #6 pick in the 2008 draft.

It helps knowing that in advance, and it will be curious (although unlikely) to see if teams avoid signing their pick intentionally in years when the draft is down on prime talent, to get a better prospect in a draft the following year, if said draft was heralded as a far superior one.

I know, hence the unlikely reference. :D

Greg65,

I thought that to myself as well. It would certainly be a decent strategy.....a shady one, but potentially effective.

Does MLB have a requirement that the teams enter into "good faith" negotiations with their 1st rounders to avoid this strategy? Seems to me they would have thought of this.

Just for clarification...

Say the O's don't sign Weiters and are given the 6th pick in the draft, one slot lower than where he was picked. Then they finished with the 10th worst record in baseball, they would then get the 6th and 10th (which would become the 11th) picks?

Yes, you are correct. Although I'm sure that you, me, and 95% of us don't wish to see Wieters elsewhere. =)

Agreed. I would definitely rather see Weiters in Bowie next April then us picking up Joe Prospect
