A friend of mine attended Saturday night's game and he noticed a couple of guys with a radar gun behind the plate. Several kids asked for and got their autographs. He wanted me to try to find out who they might be.
He said he thought they were connected to the Orioles and that he noticed that one of them had a long scar behind his elbow.
Any ideas are appreciated.

My guess would be they are players/pitchers who are either on the DL or starters who are not scheduled to start for a day or two. Having them do the charting and radar gun keeps them involved and is part of the learning process for them. It also helps them if they face the same team down the road. You often see the next day's pitcher doing pitching charts in the dugout as well.

Typically the day after a pitchers start he will do radar gun. On occasion they will have another player out there with them but in Bowie it seems to be just the radar guy up top and then the other person is charting in the dugout.

At Delmarva, the visiting teams always have 2 guys in street clothes behind home plate. They are the pitcher from the night before and the pitcher the next game. The Shorebirds don't seem as consistent as they sometimes have just 1 instead of always 2. What race was the guy? That may narrow it down a bit. I'd guess Bascom or Zack Clark though if it was Saturday.

I don't know if anyone remembers this or not but Bedard came to Delmarva on a rehab start a couple of years ago. There was an ML scout there. I noticed the radar at the stadium said Bedard was 96 97. I didn't think that was right on, so I went to ask the guy with the radar gun and he said right around 93 94. Sorry this had nothing to do with the topic.

Last year I was at a Wilmington Blue Rock game sitting right behind home plate. There were probably another 8-10 people in that area. First pitch is thrown a bunch of radar guns go up. The guy I was sitting next to was a scout for Mariners. They all have to have there reports finalized around the beginning of Aug. Could be what they were doing.

My friend told me the guy was white and the scar was on his left arm.

At Delmarva this year, the pitcher for the game after next mans the radar gun and last game's pitcher mans the video. A double header can mess up the radar-video schedule a little.
You mean you can't read the autographs? ;) Even the numbers? :o If there are no numbers, then it may be a former player who is a scout. Scouts are always at the games with their radar guns. If the players were from the visiting team, thet may use a different system.

Kyle Schmidt was doing radar Saturday night because he pitched on Monday (the pitchers always do radar two days before they pitch, chart in the dugout the day before they pitch, and video the day after they pitch.) Kyle has a large scar covering about 3/4 of his left arm from a car accident he had his senior year of high school (good thing he is a RHP)...mystery solved!!

I got this on my website guestbook :
"I'm Kyle Schmidt's mom. Nice site, fun to look at the West VA game, Kenny Holmberg on that team is our buddy too.
I have a favor to ask, for some reason I cannot post messages on Orioles Hangout. They posted a question and you responded about who was manning the radar gun with the long scar on the left arm Saturday night. It was my son, Kyle, the scar is from his car accident when he was a senior in high school. Would you please post it for me. The pitchers have to take turns manning the radar and posting stats for the pitchers. THANKS!"
