Sad day to see one of baseballs ambassadors pass on.
RIP Scooter, you'll be missed.
Some great stories in this obituary: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/08/14/sports/baseball/14cnd-rizzuto.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&hp&adxnnl=0&adxnnlx=1187107216-7MZ/gg6SsnuJmTJbjr+HLQ
The one Moose posted has some great ones, too.

JERRY: What is that?
GEORGE: Ahh, Steinbrenner gave 'em to us, in honor of Phil Rizzuto being
inducted into the Hall of Fame.
*squeezes the miniature head*
HEAD: Holy cow!
JERRY: They don't actually have to squeeze his head to get him to say "Holy
cow," do they?
GEORGE: Just the last few innings of a double-header.
Kramer enters. He is carrying a battered sewing machine. He comes over.
KRAMER: Hey. Look at this. I'm in the passing lane of the Arthur Berkhardt
expressway, going seventy and bam! Dragged this thing for five exits.
JERRY: Why didn't you pull over?
KRAMER: Well I was drafting behind a semi. I didn't wanna lose him. The
infrastructure, Jerry, it's crumbling.
GEORGE: *squeezes the miniature head.*
HEAD: Holy cow!
KRAMER: Well, look at that. A talking Nixon.

The Scooter is an icon! My mother went to high school in Richmond Hill, NY with him - she just passed last year at 89 also. God speed, Phil!

I always remember him from Billy Madison.

from NY Times article
colleagues were fond of recalling his scorecard notation of “W.W.,” for “Wasn’t Watching.”
That is what I remember the few times I listened to him back in the day.....
He would be telling a story (oblivious to the action on the field) and he would suddenly realize that he had misseda batter or two and say "Munson is up, Reggie is now on first base. How did he get there ? WW".
Funny if you liked his style. Annoying if you didn't.

At least he went to his grave knowing he'd made it to the Hall of Fame. I'll leave the debate about whether he deserved it for another day. RIP, Scooter.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but i remember him remaining at least a part-time announcer for the Yankees through the 1990s and then the team fired him because he chose to go to Mantle/DiMaggio's funeral rather than call the game.
Can anyone confirm this for me?

As I heard it the other day, he was told that he couldn't have the day off for Mantle's funeral in 1995, and was so disgusted with himself that he left mid-game in someplace like Toronto or Cleveland. He may have quit for the rest of the season, but Steinbrenner convinced him to come back for 1996. I'm not sure that he quit, and I'm fairly certain that he was never "fired," but he was so disillusioned with that event that he was ready to sever ties.
