Is it possible that they mishandle Erbe? Did they bring him up to fast? Should he of stayed at Delmarva for one more year? I think they might of. It's seems to me from what I have been reading and hearing is that his fastball is very straight and it's very hittable. I haven't seen him pitch this year but I will have an opportunity next homestand, so I will see for myself.
My best guess is that they fiddled with his mechanics and Erbe hasn't handled it well. He has looked closed to the same pitcher as last year at times (in May & July), although he's never looked dominant like he did last year. Some people say they aren't concerned but I'd have to check their pulse.

Did you stay at a HI Express last night? ;)

Here's my broken record:
-Erbe's 19, the rest of the league ranges from 22-27
-It's his second full season
-He's going to experience peaks and valleys
-He's admitted to losing focus when he gets behind
-His FB is getting hit for the first time
Everything will be okay. Time will tell, and we'll obviously need a third full season to really gauge his ceiling, and maybe even a fourth when he's 21. It's way too early to freak out about Brandon.

It is too soon to panic, but I don't think his year is one we shouldn't have some concern about. How many top prospects no matter how young have seasons (~6.50ish ERA) like the one Erbe is having this year? I can't think of many.

Are we sure he is healthy?

Sports Guy, I've been harping on that exact same point for over a month. His first few weeks were very good as I recall, and then we have a total collapse. Given the wonderful way that the Orioles handle pitching injuries, I don't have much confidence in them here either.

I have no problem with Erbe. He is very young, working on his pitches and getting touched up a bit.
Somewhere on OH recently, they were talking about Erbe and how our scout's and coaches were still very high on him and they thought he was learning how to pitch at this level. Seeing what types of things would work and what wouldn't work. Learning new pitches, feeling comfortable throwing them in situations, etc...
They also said sometimes he tries to be too cute and doesn't trust his stuff and then when he gets behind in the count, he throws a meatball. Once he starts to get a good feel of his pitches, and control of them, you will see results. They still said his velocity was in the mid-90's, so I don't think he is injured.
I hope I can find that info I am talking about, but I read it recently, and I believe it was on here on a thread. I am not overly worried about him even though I would love to see better surface results this year.

Loewen looked real sloppy his first year at Frederick. Made me question his potential. They moved him up to Bowie be cause of the contract anyway and he turned it on.
Erbe could of just be learning and have compelely lost his touch. I like the theory of them tinkering with his mechanics. Now he probally doesnt remember what "right" feels like anymore. He is too good to loose it forever.

i mean a guy who is 6'7" just needs to stay on top of the ball. sometimes, he doesn't throw from the same arm angle and thats when the pitches get up and get hit. i think some time with scott mcgregor might be the panacea to get his mechanics going in the right direction.
but adam is right, a guy who is 19 with that much potential can't be written off. 2007 has just merely been a bump in the road. if and when he fills out his potential, right handed hitters won't touch him. that ball gets on top of righty hitters in a hurry and he hides it very well.

I am in total agreement with people who have said it is too early.
It's certainly never GOOD that he is getting beat around.
Tells you that this guy isn't a phenom like Lincecum, but then again, not a lot of kids really are.
But this is one of those periods for him where hitters have started to get to him, and how he bounces back will be a better measure of his success, not his current numbers and performance.

Lincecum is what, 4 years older than Erbe? He gave up a lot of walks early in his career at Washington:

Isn't Erbe 6'4"?
Yeah, and that's a stretch I talked to him at a game once, and I was taller than him and I'm 6'3".

Lincecum is a bad comp. Just b/c Lincecum looks like he's 12 doesn't mean he's some kind of phenom right out of HS.
Erbe has plenty of time to figure his game out. He's got about three years before I even start to be worried.

The purpose of the comparison was to solely point out that Lincecum had never been hit hard at any level before getting to the Giants. Erbe is going through that now, because he is pitching at a high level of baseball for his age.
But I think we all agree in the end that no one should be worried about his future just yet. Let him learn.

I guess they're taking it easy with him but he had a good outting today. Only 2 IP but no hits, walks, and one K. Baby steps!

What was the injury??
I hope it is only because he is nearing his innings pitch limit for the season they have set for him and not an injury.
