The last 1st rd pick (not include sandwich picks) to not sign was Wade Townsend in 2004. So yes this is normal

Not really. We came out way ahead. We should be thankful for the Townsend failure.

Lets look at who we passed on
Jered Weaver
Billy Butler
Stephen Drew
Josh Fields
PHILLIP HUGHES
Those are all the guys who have made an impact on Major Leagues already. There are a few guys left who are good prospects on there way up to

Come on... every team can have those where passed over. In Jered Weaver's case.
SD, Detroit, NYM, TB, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Cincinnatti, Colorado, Texas and Pittsburg ALL passed on him.
Hey go back to 1988, Mike Piazza was the 1390 player drafted, in the 62nd round. There was 1395 players drafted that year.

I'm not sure what the relevance of the names you've listed are. It wasn't Townsend or any of those guys. It was Townsend or Christopher Nelson. Nelson is still a decent 22 year old prospect in A ball but the guy we ended up getting as a result of drafting and failing to sign Townsend is also pretty good prospect who will be starting for the O's tommorrow night.

Anyone who would rather have Olson over Weaver, Hughes or Drew is crazy. Olson is #3 starter at best prolly. Hughes is at least a #1. Weaver is a #2 but he does have injury problems.
Dont bring up Piazza, he was luck.
