Olson or Smith? I heard a very good discussion today about which guy makes the team. Do either make the team? Troy Smith was supposedly hand picked by Ozzie and Drew Olson is a favorite of the new OC. Then the comment was made that the team is only going to carry 2 QB's. I like them both and hope we don't have to part with either but I know that is highly unlikely.

I asked this questiona week ago, and for some of the similar reasons.
It is an interesting question, because loyalty seems to go a long way with the Ravens, plus Olsen looked pretty good last week.
More then likely, though, I think they keep Smith and drop Olsen to the practice squad. He didn't seem great throwing the ball Monday (you know, in his first professional game action ever :p) but he moved around in the pocket really well.

This is going to be a problem. I don't want to see another Derek Anderson situation arise. A 5th round pick on the practice squad, especially one that Ozzie covets, will be snatched with the quickness by Phil Savage. I like the potential in both Troy Smith and Drew Olson. Ravens fans really need to think about the future at QB and who will be part of the Ravens future. Right now, it is too early to tell. Maybe tonight will shed some light on the situation.

FWIW John Madden was saying last nite he thought the Ravens would only be keeping two QBs and if they did keep a third he thought they should have a more veteran-type.
But I don't know if he really knows much about the Ravens or if he's just filling up air-time.

I didn't hear him say that. I did hear him say that he expected that Kyle Boller would "want" to stay a Raven at the end of the season. This was in regards to the Billick statement "I don't know why he [Boller] would want to be here next year." Throughout the night Madden said he though Troy Smith would make the team.
I might be wrong though.

I would rather keep (4) QB's than let go a potentially good future starter.
We need more time to figure out Olsen vs Smith. But, we still need Boller for this year.
Here is a 53 man roster that seems to work with 4 QB's. It isn't unheard of to keep 4 QB's.
9 OL - Ogden, Terry, Gaither, Yanda, Flynn, Chester, Vincent, Grubbs, Brown
6 WR - Mason, Clayton, Williams, Figurs, Moore, Darling
3 TE - Heap, Sypniewski, Wilcox
8 DB - CMac, Rolle,Pittman, Reed, Landry, Sapp, Oglesby, Ivy (or Martin)
7 LB - Lewis, Scott, Barnes, Burgess, Smith, Stills, Haley
7 DL - Ngata, Gregg, Bannon, Ellison, Suggs, Pryce, Johnson
1 K - Stover
1 P - Koch
1 LS - Katula
4 RB - McGahee, Anderson, Smith, Sams
2 FB - McLain, Green
4 QB - McNair, Boller, Olsen, Smith
53 Players
I would rather keep 4 QB's than let one go for one of these guys (presumably who would be kept instead of Olsen/Smith). Either Olsen or Smith would be snatched up off our practice squad.
RB-Daniels, RB-Ross, LB-Cody (probably IR again anyway), DB-Winborne, DB-Martin (or Ivy)
Keep the future potential difference maker (QB) rather than a 2nd string special teamer.

Not a bad idea, but given Stover's inability to kick deep and the fact that Sammy's not really that much better leads me to believe they'll keep a kickoff specialist.
Just a hunch.

I don't see Olson being a future starter or a loss. Boller is good backup and I really think Smith brings a lot of intangibles as well as the fact he's mobile. Smith should stay, Olson can go on practice squad. No loss if he's taken in my opinion.

Many people thought losing Derek Anderson would be no loss either.
He may end up a starter in this league and has a great arm.
I don't think we can keep 4 Qbs unless Smith is going to be in the slash role.

I'd be surprised if we kept 3 QB's.
I think Smith will be the one who is kept.

I don't know that losing D.A. will end up being a great loss in the long run.
Having a great arm doesn't always translate. Just ask Boller.
Olsen would have to have an amazing couple weeks for them to expose Smith to the practice squad. He wouldn't last long.

Pure speculation by the Sun, but it looks like Olson may have been cut....
The Ravens won't announce the players who were cut to get down to the 75-player maximum (and don't have to until tomorrow), but there were several players missing from today's portion of practice open to the media, and the most glaring absence was quarterback Drew Olson. Olson was battling rookie fifth-round draft pick Troy Smith for the No. 3 position.
Other players thought to be on the bubble who were missing from practice were punter Brendan Carney, running back Greg Pruitt Jr., safety Bobby Blackshire, cornerback Terrell Maze and long snapper Nick Leeson.

I really can't see them releasing Smith.

What's working in Smith's favor is probably the fact that this is Boller's last season as a Raven. McNair's here for probably another two years and Smith can be someone who could develop as a backup, learn the system and come on the cheap. Maybe he can develop as a starter but I doubt it. He's probably worth the risk but I don't think he's the future QB of this franchise.

Troy Smith looks like the winner. Drew Olson is among the the first round of cuts...

Not shocking.
Hopefully Drew catches on somewhere. Good dude.
