According to the boston globe, Chris Carter of the DBacks (now in AAA) will be acquired by the Nats and then sent to BOS for Wily Mo Pena. This seems like a little more than what I expected BOS to get. The WPost says that WAS could send Jesus Colome to ARZ. Could we make a better offer?

As the excellent Gordon Edes wrote in Saturday's Boston Globe, he had a source with intimate knowledge of the deal say the player to be named is Chris Carter, a first baseman who has been trapped behind other talented young players in the Arizona system. But in order for that to happen, the Nationals would have to first acquire Carter.

How would this happen? Well, try out this theory: Maybe it has been delayed because Arizona wants relief help. And maybe the Nationals have offered Jesus Colome. And maybe the Diamondbacks want to know that Colome, out so long with that you-know-what, is healthy and can pitch effectively.

This is just a theory, but it's possible that if Colome comes through one or two outings in good health, Colome goes to Arizona, and Carter goes to Boston via Washington.

I can't believe ARZ would give up on this guy for 6 weeks of Colome.

Bowden is fond of Pena from his days in Cincy. Carter will likely have a career as a DH, so his possible Boston destination makes sense. He is a fine hitter with 20 HR pop and a good BA. He is an atrocious fielder however, which is why (in my opinion) his designation as a DH by the majority of scouts has made him a target of some American League teams.

Carter would have made sense from an Oriole point of view, but an unlikely option once he is sent to the Red Sox. Again, IF he is traded. :)

Where does he play in Boston though??

I don't think he's on the 40 man roster for ARZ.

However, even if he was, the thought is that Youk will move from first to 3rd once Lowell leaves this fall.

Doubtful they put the poor fielding Carter at first IMO.

He may be insurance for that though.

It looks like he was a teamate of Guthrie at Stanford.

I would be pissed if BOS got a prospect, WAS got Pena (who not much older than alot of prospects....and who just hit his 2nd HR in 3 games tonight) and all ARZ wanted was an 8th inning guy who's going to be a FA in a month.
Why can't we get in on something like this? The Nats got Lopez and Kearns for nothing as well....not to mention getting Sorianos (ie: picks) for next to nothing.

(that is, if Colome is what completes the deal)

The DBacks are getting garbage back for Carter...All of you who said Trachsel wasn't worth Carter, look at this.

See, this is the type of thing that pisses me off about the Orioles.

Here is a guy that Arizona is basically giving away...They have no use for him.

And yet, he could be a very good DH.

We can't even get a 750 OPS out of our DHs and guys like Carter are available and we do nothing to get them.

This guy could end up being a poor mans Hafner.

Never said they did...But i think they were rumored to want him and we speculated about it on the board....Many said Trax wasn't worth Carter.

Maybe we could have dealt Parrish for him???

Maybe we could send Bradford and cash for Carter and another good prospect?

We could have done something here.

Parrish for Carter? I don't think that gets it done. Trachsel, maybe, but that's if they need him. Bradford is a possibility, though.

Parrish is much better than the names that article is mentioning.

Apparently not---Carter must have huge holes in his swing or some other major problem, else a lot of us (including myself) greed over this guy.
Wasn't Sheally last year's flavor of the month?

And it's still worth a shot if all you have to give up is garbage.

Screw that, we could have gotten Wily Mo Pena for, like, Luis Hernandez or something, and been set at DH for the next 10 years.

Do you seriously want to trade the love child of Honus Wagner and Ozzie Smith?

What trait did good ol' Honus pass on down to Luey Hernandez?

Have you ever looked at his power and OPS+? Just talk to Eli, Luis is on his way.;)

How could I ever forget! Make way for Luis Hernandez, the mans on his way to Cooperstown!

Seriously though, I wish we made a crack at getting Pena. It wouldn't have taken much. Just sit him at DH every day and let him mash.

Oh well....

He's only got HRs in the last 2 games. We don't have room for someone like that.

Nope.

Better bring your glove, Wily Mo.

I do alloww for the fact that BOS may not have wanted to trade Wily Mo within the division, especially since we play them for like 7 more games (and they were already talking about sign stealing)....but what about the ARZ end of the deal? Could we have done better than Ian Desmond?

Emiliano Fruto is the player going to Arizona (according to the WPost). That seems about right. WMP and EF are both raw guys with upside.

How the Sox got Chris Carter is beyond me... The rest of the AL especially the East is probably miffed at Bowden for making that deal, but it won't hurt him at all. I'd rather have Chris Carter. The only problem is he can't play good defense so they just got another David Ortiz. My bet is he is going to be another trade chip for something else in the offseason...

Damn I wanted Chris Carter on the 08 team
