I can find a ton of references to Earl's line about "pitching, defense, and the 3 run homer"... but I can find no reference at all to *when* he said it.... What year?

Perhaps the most famous saying in modern Oriole history... and there's no knowledge of when it was said? How is this possible?

"Praise be the three-run homer!" Have you never read, "Weaver on Strategy?" He devotes chapters to pitching, fielding, and offense.

I am well aware of his views about baseball. What I'm trying to find out is when he was first reported to utter the famous phrase. I'm not even in need of a precise date. I'd be happy to know what year it was. IIRC, it was well after the dynasty years, but beyong that I don't know...

OK, if nobody knows when he first said it, what's your Best Guess about the year in which he first said it?

Do we know that he "said" it at all? Or was it just written in his book?

Good point, never thought about it that way...

Is the original pub date '84? If so, then the whole idea came out after he retired? That doesn't seem right to me... I'm thinking it was in the 70's, prolly late-ish 70's when he was winning more games than a normal guy would have... but I really don't know... which is why I'm asking...

The quote is " The key to winning baseball games is pitching, fundamentals, and three run homers"

It precedes Weaver on Strategy....no idea of date tho.
