There's almost nothing worse for me than having to get something at the deli, especially at Walmart. Picking a number gives you a rough idea of how many more days it will be until they get to you. I've seen it where there will be about 10 people in line and one of the deli people will go into the back room, seemingly to re-up on a depleted stock but it turns out they were just going on their break, leaving just one person to wait on the rest.
I'm sure it's company rules but after slicing something, they go back and put a fresh wrap on it and put it back away eating up another 5 minutes. Did the previous wrap get contaminated by the air?
Why wern't these people ever exposed to a "sense of urgency" training video? Hello people when you're backed up,you're supposed to move a little faster.
Finally when you get waited on they make a slice or two and mosey over and ask you if it's the right thickness, thereby exposing to the whole world which deli meat/cheese you prefer.
Oh and you have to make sure that when you only want a half pound of something, you have to emphasize a HALF pound,or you will get a whole one. Then you are stuck with either having to buy the whole pond or wait another ten minutes while they reweigh it and needlessly throw good food away.
And finally these people have no finger agility to close a zip lock bag.So they pull the sticker over and paste it to the side of a bag,and when you open it ,there's a nice hole in the side to let the air in.
Don't get me started on the deli bread which is closed off with tape instead of a twist tie.

I think you answered your problem there...don't go to walmart for deli meat. For that matter don't go to walmart for your groceries.

What kind of deli meat are you getting? Usually when I order some kind of meat/cheese from the deli, I'm not embarrassed by my choice.

Seriously, you get what you pay for. My ethical objections to Wal-Mart aside, I'd be scared to death about the quality of meat you might get there. :002_stongue:

I judge the quality of my deli worker with the number of teeth that they have.

What would be wrong with the quality of meat at Wal Mart?

Maybe he's getting bologna and Velveeta cheese? I don't know if they sell that at the deli counter, but I'd be embarrassed. ;)
And congratulations, Joe'sOs. I consider myself a fairly adept ranter, but I didn't know it was possible to write a multi-paragraph diatribe against delis. I'm impressed.

What's wrong with the quality of everything at Wal-Mart? They force their suppliers to cut corners in order to sell them products at impossibly cheap prices. They probably get their deli meat from some sketchy factory in China.

They don't really need red vests... all you have to do is look for whoever is white and male. ;)

Or has a walkie talkie because those make them official. I hate the new policy of having the 70 year old come up and ask to see the resit to make sure that all the items in the bags were paid for..grrr and why is the entrance so blasted hot when it rains..its 90 degrees out and these rocket scientists have the heat on to dry the carts..no its not really drying the carts because sweet is dripping on to them.

Sprawlmart does that too? I noticed they've started doing that at a K-Mart near me lately (yes I occasionally go to K-Mart... their record isn't great but it's not as bad as Wal-Mart's and I can't afford to buy everything from natural foods co-ops and fair trade boutiques). I've also noticed something else about that policy... if you're white (as I am) or Asian, they just take your receipt from you and scribble on it with a highlighter; if you're black or Latino, they hold you up while they search through all your bags. A couple of times I've had to stand in line to exit the place because they've been harassing someone for shopping while black. Lately I've been going to a Target which is further away because they don't do that.

I just don't know if it a crime deterrent to someone going to steal something if a 70 year old with a hilighter is in their way.

It's not. The whole thing is as stupid as it is obnoxious. In fact, it almost makes me want to steal from them just for the heck of it. :002_scool:

We all have our pet peeves don't we? The deli thing for me is just a microcosm of poor customer service, incompentecy and inefficency. Why do you let workers take a break when they are 10 people behind without covering for them? How much business do you lose when people don't feel like wasting 20 minutes in a line? I don't care what your job is you need to put an effort into it and you need to be polite. Walmart thinks they can get away with anything just because of their cheap prices. They don't treat thier workers or customers with any dignity. This is a top down philosophy. I have found the same thing at Lowes vs. Home Depot. Home Depot is a lot more customer friendly.
As far as walmart's meat quality, they sell name brands but that doesn't mean anything in a world of outsourcing on steroids. If they can't make safe toys and pajamas in China ,Lord only knows what kind of conditions they produce food under. I saw an article a few weeks ago where they were using sawdust as a filler in their sweet rolls over there. China denies everything and blames others for their problems. Chinese furniture imports are putting our furniture makers out of business. How can they produce and ship a sofa over here cheaper than we can do it ourselves? By cutting corners on quality and dumping at a loss.
Why is our healthcare system so overwhelmed with sick people? It has to be from the food. Amish people live in the same country and have much lower rates of heart disease ,diabetes and cancer. My guess is the way they cure and perserve their meat and eat whole organic vegatables.Processed food is killing people, especially meat. They also aren't as stressed over obsessions with modern day materialism.

Geez, how did I know you would have some agenda towards WalMart? I'm pretty sure most of the products that Walmart carries, are carried at other grocery stores.

Because they don't have to pay their workers/laborers as much. If the quality were significantly worse, it would lose out competitively and no one would buy it.

Genetics? The founder effect could have a profound impact on a group like the Amish so they probably don't have as much genetic diversity. Sometimes that works out, but in other cases, such as certain Native American tribes, that leads to high obesity rates or prevalence of other disorders.

I refuse to shop anywhere where I can buy underwear and food in the same place. That is just disgusting.

Don't think she was talking about the same exact food you can buy at any store, but the "store brand" type stuff. Or deli meat.
I, too, have to question why you'd ever go to a deli counter at a WalMart. How much are you actually saving from a standard grocery deli? Go to a Shoppers Food Warehouse or something. Saving a few cents is not worth an intestinal tract problem (to put it delicately).

I wouldn't consider buying food at Wally World, especially after all the Chinese fallout and their HUGE operations there.
I'd love to shun the evil corporation altogether, but... their prices are the best. Always.
