View Full Version : Looks like Mussina just might've just pitched himself out of the NYY rotation

This was the line Mike Mussina just put up in Detroit with his rotation spot on the line:

3.0 IP 9 H 6 ER 1 BB 0 K

How much does he have left in the tank?

Good.

:) This is good. I love seeing Mussina fail.

He was very good last year....Bad this year...Wonder what is going on with him? Injury perhaps?

I hope he has a few more decent years in him to make sure he gets into the HOF even though he should be in there anyway.

That's actually a perfect example/analogy. It appears both are tanking out, but looks like there could be just a little left to keep going. But how long can they go? Is it worth it? They should just go home :p

I always, always have felt that way too.

But watching him struggle tonight, I gotta say I felt a little bit bad for the guy.
It's tough to forget that he was the man with us, even though I kinda hate him for going to the Yankees.

Gotta be an injury. He's not that old, and he's too smart and talented to have just lost it.

Agreed. Also mention that it is so sudden. He has only gone 9 innings in his last 3 starts, but looked pretty good before that. Either the thinkingist pitcher in baseball has thought himself into a real funk, or he has some sort of an injury.

I saw Moose's postgame interview last night, and it was difficult to watch. I've rooted against him since he went to the Yankees, but if you have any compassion for your fellow humans at all, it was hard to see someone so obviously feeling beaten, confused and humbled.

As for what's wrong with him, the most reasonable analysis I heard is that he lost 5 or more mph off his fastball, then moved him arm slot more to 3/4 in search of velocity. That messed up his other pitches.

He admitted nibbling too much -"pitching backwards" in his own words- the last couple starts before last night, but yesterday he went back to attacking hitters with the fastball. Same results.

David Justice for one, seems to think Mussina is done being an effective pitcher, at least for this year. Thinks he needs a major overhaul to adjust to his diminished repertoire that can't be accomplished in a few weeks.

After the worst Yankee road loss in their history, Mussina just might have completely pitched himself off the team. Too bad the score wasn't 31-0 instead of 16-0.

Saw his post game interview yesterday...He sounds and looks like he has lost confidence.

Said he thinks this is the worse 9 innings of his career over his past 3 starts.

Said he has never gone through this before.

He will be back but it is possible that it won't be until next year.

ESPN is reporting that they may pull him out of the rotation. I'm sure he's a nice guy and a fine human being and all, but I get much joy out of the fact that he's breaking down as a player.

It still burns me up, all of those 20 win seasons in New York, and the image of him finally raising that World Series trophy.

Oh, wait a minute, that's right - neither happened...

I've heard a lot of things about Mike Mussina, but never once that he was a nice guy. I do not feel bad about enjoying that arrogant jerk's comedown.

Probably.

Said he has never gone through this before.

Poor baby!

Don't hurry back Moose. No one wants to see you drag your tired ass around like an old dog with worms.

Actually, thats not true. I love seeing you fail, Mussina. I know the chances of you reading this are very slim, but I feel awesome when I see you fail.

Yes, that might make me a pathetic human being....but if taking great joy in seeing you get shelled is wrong, then I never ever want to be right.

Mikey's officially OUT of the MFY's rotation, at least for now:

Yankees drop Mussina from rotation, youngster Kennedy to start Saturday
By MIKE FITZPATRICK, AP Baseball Writer
August 29, 2007

NEW YORK (AP) -- Mike Mussina is out. Call up another kid.

The New York Yankees dropped a struggling Mussina from their rotation Tuesday, turning to touted prospect Ian Kennedy over a pitcher with 247 major league wins -- in the middle of a pennant race....

The first one was right. The second one looks like a newer model, which Mike Mussina is not. :p

Re: Moose's personality, I remember reading/hearing about the difference between Mussina and Pat Hentgen when the latter signed with the Orioles. For one thing, Hentgen was more than willing to help any of the younger pitchers, while Moose could be *****ly even in the best of times. For another thing, the Orioles not-so-secretly rooted for Hentgen a little harder than they might other players/pitchers because he was such a great guy.

Find me any organization that doesn't actively root against players who've stiffed the home team for their hated rival. Ask "sad, spiteful" BoSox fans how they feel about Johnny Damon. As a homegrown Oriole, Mussina went to the worst possible team he could've, as far as we Bird fans are concerned. If he was having these problems with the Cubs, D-backs, Mariners, or just about any other team not in Boston or NY, we'd all probably be feeling pretty badly for him. But, no, like Clemens before him, he went for the cash and the easy ring. Thankfully, he hasn't gotten the latter, and hopefully never will.

F*** him.

Not to mention, even if we were 20 games in front in the ALE, and the Skanks were dead last, I'd still hate them with the fire of 1000 suns.

He said some unkind things when he left. Really came across as egotistical to me. I have hoped for his arm to fall off ever since.

I'm no fan of Mussina now that he's a Yankee, and yes he could have honored the Baltimore fans and gone somewhere else the way that Pettitte did when the Red Sox wanted him after he left NY, but come on. Angelos jerked him around. I can't blame him for leaving. The Yankees went hard after him and made him feel wanted. So Mussina signed with them. They promised him a shot at a ring. So I can't sit here and wish the man ill will as he struggles late in his career. The most I will do is be content that he wanted a ring with NY and didn't get one. Yet. But that's all I can do. Sorry.

I'll always hold a grudge against him for turning me away when I caught him at the age of 10 outside of an autograph signing when he was leaving and he refused to sign my ball and told me to "catch him at the ballpark"... well I never did. On the other hand, Ken Griffey Jr was at the same signing and stopped outside to give me an autograph and also had a nice conversation with a few fans outside. Good guy.

We had a member who used to work in the warehouse and worked around Mike Mussina. She told stories here one time and I haven't felt bad about Mike Mussina losing a game since.

I forget her name but I remember she went to live in Isreal.
