Shortly before the opening kickoff, Maryland announced that backup quarterback Josh Portis has been ruled ineligible for the season because of an "academic issue."

Boy, between the O's stinking, the Vikings preparing to stink, and now this, my fantastic era of fanhood continues.

Next thing to happen will be for James Gist to blow out his knee.

So do we know yet what this "academic issue" was??

Got caught cheating on a PopQuiz. This definitely stinks. Between the transfers we lost in the offseason and now this we are a little bit thin now at QB.

Apparently, he cheated on a pop quiz in the Spring. (http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/college/football/bal-portis0904,0,6688423.story)

Too bad, as I thought he was the key to the season (particularly his mobility). Fridge is now going to have to develop some Offensive Line depth in a hurry.

Are you kidding me??

The man hasn't played in a year (because of transfer rules), finally gets a chance to suit up with the team and throws it away on ... a pop quiz? Not even a real test, but a freakin' 10 question pop quiz??

I heard Josh Portis was quoted as saying "pop quizzes be making me mad!"

Well, FWIW, I am glad to see that Portis is owning up to making this mistake, and does not appear to be pointing fingers at the other student in question.

Since Portis appears to be taking ownership of the academic dishonesty, I hope that he does what he has to do to right his academic ship, so to speak, and is able to get himself back together as a student.
