Basically, I'm looking for a couple good stats to use for my OOTP online league, one for batters and one for pitchers, for a little bit more accurate shorthand stat. I generally use OPS and a combination of ERA and WHIP for batters and pitchers respectively. My main concern is that the stats I end up on using arn't to complicated - the more variables you throw at a history major like myself, the greater the certainty that I make a mistake.
From my initial investigations, I've looked at Wikipedia, so it's obviously been a cursory investigation, but I'm liking Gross Production Average so far. Mainly due to the simplicity of the formula and it's weighting of OBP. For pitchers, I've been looking at Defense-Independent Component ERA.
Basically, for those who have more knowledge with the application of sabermetrics than I am, what are the pluses and minuses of these two stats? Are there any glaring issues with either of them? Do you have any alternative suggestions might meet my needs better than GPA and DICE?
