View Full Version : Ravens @ Bengals

A little early for this game thread, but what the hell. It's Friday and I am ready for Ravens football.
There is some rain in the forecast for Monday night, although it's a 40% chance of thunderstorms. As a Ravens fan, you have to hope it stays dry. This team's record in bad weather is horrible.
Anyway, I am optimistic for the season this year, but I am still worried about the offense. The defense will be strong as always.
The Bengals offense is always strong and their defense still has problems but they can be good at times. I think the biggest thing in this game is the Ravens getting to Palmer and being able to establish the run. If we can do those 2 things, regardless of the weather, we will win.
Clear weather, Ravens 23 - Bengals 18
Bad weather. Bengals 13 - Ravens 12

I tend to agree with you, except I feel it leans Cincy's way in both sets of conditions. If this were here at M&T I'd say we'd have it, but on Monday night, the home opener, I gotta say the Bengals take it. Not like I'm rooting for that.

We're going to need some turnovers, which we didn't get in Cincy last year...and we're going to need a big special teams play to win this game. I really don't think our offense has gelled yet and our passing game will be ineffective against Cincy's underrated secondary.
30-20 Ravens, if everything goes according to my plan
20-16 Bengals, if things don't go our way

At first I was really feeling bad about this game. Home opener for Cinci on National Tv and a need to prove themselves had me feeling we probably would lose. However, the closer the game gets the better I'm feeling about our chances. I think we are the more talented team and if we are able to control the clock and keep the D rested we will win rather convincingly.

I have to agree that the Ravens tend to play bad in bad weather games. Mainly because they're defense is built primarly on speed and rain or snow tends to take away from that advantage. However, I think bad weather takes away from the Bengals as well. It takes advantages away from Johnson and T.J. Whosyourmama who rely alot on quickness to get open.
Either way, it's a tough game in Cincy. I say Ravens take it by a slight advantage 24-21.

Geez people, talk about hedging your bets.
Let's see, it'll be 23-17 if the Ravens win and 27-13 if the Bengals win.
This game is more important to the Ravens than the average Week 1 game. If they get off to a poor start it's not like they'll be able to make up for it against San Diego, New England, Indianapolis, and Seattle in the home stretch. That's just brutal.
Turnovers win the game for Baltimore. 19-13.

I'm going to say that Samari Rolle gets beat like a rented mule on some big plays. Palmer throws for 2 passing TD's, they get 3 FG's.
The Bengals defense plays well for the 1st game and we see the same old Ravens offense. 1 TD and 3 Stover FG's. Not much protection for McNair, only short passes, no big plays.
Bengals win 23-16

I hope I'm wrong, but I see 17-13 Bengals. Opening on Monday night on the road is tough way to start the season and although I don't think the Bengals defense is very good, I want the Ravens offense to prove they are not the same offense of the past.
I'll be up at 3AM to watch this game though.... Let's hope they don't dissapoint...
The Ravens could easily win this game if they perform up to their potential, but this is a tough opening night gig. I probably would feel better if McGahee and McNair had shown much during the pre season but for now, we'll need the defense to shut down the Bengals and they've had a hard time doing that to Palmer.

Didn't they prove last year that they aren't the same old offense of the past ?
They ranked middle of the pack last year (17th overall) in the NFL. With our defense- I will take that. The Ravens offense ranked tied for 12th in points scored by the offensive unit.
But, this year we have upgraded at RB and likely further development of Clayton and Williams at WR. And McNair is more comfortable with the offense.
I am not at all concerned about the Ravens offense in the preseason. NFL preseason means as much as spring training baseball. The veterans are ready to roll.
The Ravens defense (ranked #1 in 2006) will shut down the Bengals often enough.

Ravens score two long touchdowns, one caught by Clayton and the other Williams. They add a third from Heap short, and two Stover field goals.
Bengals get a long TD catch to Housyourmomma, and a couple field goals set up by Johnson receptions.
Palmer and McNair are each sacked three times, and Palmer throws a pick to Reed due to a QB pressure.
27-13 Ravens.

One of the keys to the game will be Baltimores secondary, and how they can contain both Johnson and Houshmandzadeh. If we can neutralize their recievers, we should be able to win, but it will be close.

Man I had no idea Cincy's o-line was in that bad a shape. Tons of injuries and apparently they haven't played together at all the entire pre-season.
I expect to see tons of blitzes tonight and for Suggs to be in Palmer's face for most of the game.
If McNair can pick on their secondary and Rolle can limit the damage done on his side of the field, we should be able to win.
The intangibles favor the Bengals and I sure wish the NFL had done us a favor and given the 13-3 team a home opener on MNF but oh well.
I'll go with 16-10 good guys.

Is Ogden playing tonight?
It will be a game time decision.
Aaron Wilson on WNST was speculating that Ogden will be playing since he practiced the last few days and that Billick may have held him out of the last preseason game to throw some doubt into Cincy's plans.
He was also speculating that Billick was purposely not showing ANYTHING in preseason- that the offense was the same plain vanilla from the Washington scrimmage straight through the last preseason game.

Is anyone else confused by the guys on the inactive list? Troy Smith and Edgar Jones I understand, but didn't we keep Lloyd for kickoffs and 52+ yard field goals? Isn't Figurs the backup return man, and couldn't he and Sams run plays similar to the ones used with Deion Sanders a few years ago? I thought Barnes was going to be a 3rd down pass rusher this year? And is Mike Anderson no longer our second back?

Lloyd, Barnes, M Anderson and Figurs are inactive? WTF?
Anderson has been injured, I think. He missed the last few days of practice.
Barnes was questionable already and I guess they don't think they need as many LBs today for whatever reason.
Lloyd is the one I don't get. Why keep a KOS and not use him?
Great catch by Demetrius Williams for a gain of 21 yards.
All passes so far...

The line doesn't look great to start.
McNair looks rattled by the crowd and the line.
Demetrius Williams is going to be the man.
Four passes to one run.
Good punt. Hopefully we settle down a little on offense next drive.
Defense looks good against the run, not getting much pressure on the pass though. Two dropped passes help us. Good return by Sams to get us past our own 40.

Except for egregious cases, I really don't like unnecessary roughness calls. How is the defender supposed to read the offensive player's mind of when he's going to go out of bounds? At that speed, someone can start to dive before the player goes out of bounds and end up hitting him out of bounds. Then when the defender doesn't go for a hit, the offensive player tries to cut it back inside.
Cincy field goal makes it 12-7. Do we make a go at some points here? Or do we just run the clock out like years past?

Not a bad half, overall.
As bad as the first quarter was, the second was that much better.
McNair looked like he was struggling a little, which is not good. The line played well after struggling early. McGahee had a couple good runs, and Smith managed to both have a couple good runs AND get up after the tackles.
Rolle is getting beat like a rented mule, as expected, but at least he's showing some emotion in the hits he has made. I understand the letter of the horse-collar tackle rule, but that Lewis tackle was not in that spirit. The Wilcox tackle, however, was both unsportsman-like, and frickin' awesome.
I think that, because the team worked through the first quarter struggles, they will pull away in the second half.

Neither; we're just that much more talented that we can overcome the bad play in the first quarter.
Seriously, people spend the week talking about Palmer and the Johnsons and Housyourmomma, and they forget that we have the best defense in the league.
