Post game pressers

I was going to post this in the short rants section, but I wanted to see if anyone else has a problem with this.

I really hate when a post game press conference is going on and then they get to the question and answer part of it and they don't have mics for the people asking the questions to the coach or the players.

You hear either silence or some muffled speech and then you hear an answer. So you have to try and figure out the question while they are answering and sometimes miss the entire answer figuring out the question.

Does anyone else get bothered by that?

Yes it aggervates me. It makes watching a press conference almost useless.

All the time actually. But logistically speaking, unless they suspend a bunch of condenser or shotgun style mics over the room and then give every outlet that feed (a daunting task even for pro teams conference rooms), there's not much they can do.

However, the person answering can do the whole "the question was..." bit. But you know coaches won't do that.

Bigfoot is blurry, that's the problem. That's extra scary to me. There's a large, out of focus monster roaming the country side. Get out of here, he's fuzzy.

Its funny, the longer you are here with people, the more you get to know them and the more information you get from people. What a great site!

Anyways, its pro sports, I would hope they would have enough money to do something like that though!!! Considering all the people that tune into ESPN and NFL network and things like that. They crave more information and I would think when you have something that comes straight out of the horses mouth, you want the most information on it.

Well, they could do it, it's just the budgetary restraints for a press conference. You'd need a dedicated audio professional just to mix those microphones, and baby sit the signal feeds through the press mult (which are handy freaking things in these situations).

But dammit, we want to hear what they are saying!:D

You know what I hate even more? When a station has a press conference feed they are playing, usually live, and they have a single area mic somewhere in the room. When someone asks a question, they'll open that mic wide and crank the volume, so you get this barely audible question with a ton of hiss and ambient room noise. Which to a guy like me, is more grating than not being able to make the question out at all.

Or you could just have some miscellaneous guy up there who just repeats the question for everybody, which buys a few seconds for the manager to think about how he wants to answer the usually dumb question...

Aren't all press conferences like this? Not just sports-related ones? It is annoying, and really it seems pointless to air them if we aren't going to hear it anyway.

This is part of why I hate press conferences unless I'm in person (as a journalist trainee I have yet to learn to hate them overall :p)

At work we're sometime asked to sit in on press conferences if we're available (you know, to add some extra applause in the background :D), and sometimes they can be interesting.

You'll learn to hate them. The worst press conferences are the ones done by local officials. Most of them have no public speaking practice, and they yell. Into a mic. Shudder.

Anyway, the worst press conference I've ever been to was for the Ravens... Billick is an ass. The best I've ever been to is WVU football press conferences. Food, drinks, it's like a freakin fraternity party.

Since most sports press confrences are (I assume, anyway) done in a designated space, it makes no sense to me that they haven't noticed the damned things are now being televised live, and provided proper equipment, and at least an intern to baby sit it.
But that's just me...
