Here's a trailer for Valkyrie (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809913399/video/4928963/). A Bryan Singer film that's slated for a Summer of 2008 release. Tom Cruise plays Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who placed the briefcase with a bomb in an attempt to kill Adolph Hitler. Here's (http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809913399/cast) the current cast and crew.

What's it about...

The "July 20 Plot" on Hitler's life is one of the most heroic but least known episodes of World War Two. Severely wounded in combat, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg returns from Africa to join the German Resistance and help create Operation Valkyrie, the complex plan that will allow a shadow government to replace Hitler's once he is dead. But fate and circumstance conspire to thrust Stauffenberg from one of many in the plot to a double-edged central role. Not only must he lead the coup and seize control of his nation's government... He must kill Hitler himself.

The epic batter between the awesomeness that is Bryan Singer and the utter crap that is Tom Cruise.

Why couldn't they get somebody sweet to play this role, the movie sounds like an awesome idea, and I'm sure i'll see it, but I can't stand Tom Cruise.

I agree that the idea of the film is a great idea and more than likely I'll see it once it hit the big screen. There has been some controversy in just getting the film made mainly because of the filming locations that were used most notably the Bendlerblock, a memorialized location where Stauffenberg and his comrades had plotted to assassinate Hitler. The German government initially refused permission to do so, but later changed their mind just this past September. More info on the film and it's controversies can be found at Valkyrie Film Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyrie_(film)).

And I agree, Tom Cruise would not have been my first choice to play the lead role of Stauffenberg, it was probably done to get a NAME into the movie. On second thought I see why Cruise is in the film, he's one of the Executive Producers on it... thus it was his project.

Imagine this movie with Christian Bale or Clive Owen.

Having watched Batman Begins (in HD) last night I definitely could see Christian Bale portraying Stauffenberg. It would have been a very good fit as Bale is 33 and Stauffenberg was 36 when he was killed.

A scheduling problem for Bale would have existed as they were filming The Dark Knight (http://batman-dark-knight.moviechronicles.com/) (sequel to Batman Begins) the same time as they were filming Valkyrie.
