What's next for the FA?

Regardless of how good you think they are, its clear I think that their talent should be able to produce better than this.

Problem is there aren't that many really good candidates at the moment. After Euro 2008 you have maybe (Hiddink, Scolari) or beautiful pipe dreams (Wenger, Mourinho- although Jose has said only Portugal and I think goes to a super club team).

Maybe find a caretaker to stead things until the 2010 buildup (i.e. next fall), when they reassess and look to add a big name.

I think venebales (sp) will be caretaker once Maclaren is sacked.

Gerrard and Lampard shouldn't me in the midfield together. It should be Gerrard and Gareth Barry or Lamps and Barry with Captain Fantastic on the right flank. But that wasn't all that was wrong. Neither played good at all. Wayne Bridge was awful in the left back position. Scott Carson played ok but the one obvious blunder. Madeone terrific save.
I'm not the biggest Becks fan but he should have started England needed expierience and they did not get it from SWP the 2nd goal I think it was, was basically his fault, trying to play a guy offsides which wasn't even close.
Say what you want about Crouch, I personally like him, but his goal and the ball in by Beckham was class. Top drawer. The 4-5-1 didn't cut it. Its crazy Maclaren would use that formation I don't get it. Granted they didn't have Terry, Owen, Ferdinand, Rooney, but the side never did look threating England should have enough class to beat Croatia. Hats off to them though they played well.

England won't be able to touch the likes of France, Italy, and especially Spain, let alone the South American teams in the WC with their current form. Anyone watch Spains qualifier against Sweden they were pure class, beautiful football they played.

The England team has been pathetic for years. Talent wise its possibly the finest group of players we've ever had. Take a look at some of the players

Ferdinand: World's most expensive defender
Terry: Captain of one of the strongest club sides in the world
Cole: Won best left back at the last Euro's
Neville: Captain of the British champions Man Utd
Gerrard/Lampard: Finished top 5 in World player of the year in the past
Owen/Rooney: Enough Said

The fact is, the future isn't bright. The average age of that team is perfect. 27-28. By the time 2010 rolls along, Lampard will be out and a number of players will into their 30's. There are few top class English footballers nowadays who are in their 20's
Its absolutely ridiculous they didn't qualify. I'm so pissed off yet not surprised. They never play as they should when together

As for Maclaren, he was an awful choice. A mediocre club manager does not make an International coach.

They can take several months choosing a new coach. There is no rush. I would put my money on Scolari. I hope it would be Mourinho

I think it could be Capello. Do you englishmen like him, or would you rather have a countryman. It looks like Benitez kind of put his name in the pot, as him and the owners are having a 'rift' so the special one could end up in Liverpool. I forgot about Cole as well. Is all of england not surprised by this?

Capello has had a very highly distinguished career. However he doesn't know English which makes it difficult to offer him the job

At least team members are doing their part to "get it out" in the public. :)

Fabio Capello. Who cares if he can't speak English?

The man who gave the U.S. Beckham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fabio_Capello)

I think this is an excellent choice.

I have to say I'm not a huge fan of a Juve guy coming in to coach England. I don't doubt his talent but... the language barrier, scandal, and the fact that he's Italian - - lol - - just throws me a little. I would have liked to see Mourinho get the job as he think he has a better repoir with some of the core players.

But anyone is better than that last muppet.

Merry xmas Junior!

Merry Christmas too, missed you.

I agree, Jose is probably the best coach in the world. Its my understanding Portugal is the only national job he would consider taking now, and that England was a definite no. But Capello is no slouch and has quite a torphy case. He is every bit one of the best managers in the world.

No English coach anywhere NEAR the qualifications that Fabio Capello has. The FA had no choice but to go overseas because there isn't anyone English with anything like the ability to get England out of the hole they've dug for themselves.

I like the fact he will roll up, not give a F, and make changes. Capello is known for his nonexistent tolerance of "big names" who don't perform on the pitch, and he's not going to give a flying what his players or the media thinks of him. England is going to be defensively solid enough under his tutelage.

To much ego and British media and the general perceptions of value based upon the EPL which is not the same as the international game. They can't (or at least haven't recently) play(ed) an EPL attacking style and compete(d) internationally. As far as Capello's style being "conservative" or "boring", it is. But two other adjectives that are far more important that also describe his style: "effective" and "winning".

They've got a world-class manager in charge for the first time in recent memory, and he's being given 9 full months to prepare for the start of WC qualification. Now it's up to the players.
