Pirates designated first baseman Brad Eldred for assignment.

Eldred, who hit 28 homers in the minors and 12 in the majors in 2005, had fallen well behind Steve Pearce in the Pirates' plans after missing most of 2006 and struggling to a .209/.275/.399 line in Triple-A last season. Right-handed hitters with his kind of power are hard to find, so it'd be no surprise if someone took a chance on him. However, he's probably not going to have a future as a regular.

PS. Sorry if this is in the wrong section.

Eldred, Shelton, Phelps....3 former pirates I would definitely sign to minor league deals, and try out in the majors pending the trade/ release of two of Huff/ Millar/ Gibbons

Shelton and Phelps are definitely worth a flyer, but a big ole negatory on Big Country — he's just a bushy mustache away from being Steve Balboni.

Eldred's been one of my favorite "no-name" guys for awhile, ever since he was a beast in one of my Baseball Mogul leagues. I'd definitely take a chance on him.
