This just in. Michael Vick's sentence is in and he's getting 23 months in the slammer.

Not as bad as I would have thought.

Well they were suggesting he get 12 -18 months, but once I saw his "friends" get sentences that were longer than their suggested time, I had a feeling he might get a longer sentence as well.

So, his career is probably over.
He'll be out of the league for three full seasons, and will be 30 the following training camp.
What a waste.

The getting caught smoking marijuana while awaiting sentencing had a factor into it no doubt.

Today Roch says he thinks 23 months is lenient.
Shows how much he knows about criminal justice. If someone broke into my house tonight and stole a bunch of stuff and had Vick's lack of a record, they wouldn't even sniff 23 months of jail. At most, our local judges would give them three months, if that. I could give other examples of crimes where humans are harmed, and culprits do less jail time than in this instance where animals are harmed.
The federal system is different with longer sentences, for sure. But it sure does grate me when I hear someone spouting opinions on sentences when they know not what they're talking about. 23 months is a long time for his record and this crime.

The question here is: is 23 months really 23 months, or will it wind up being something along the lines of 12?

I think I heard he could trim off three months with good behavior.

In general the feds are stingier with good behavior time anyway, and there is no parole in the federal system.
Is he still facing charges in Virginia as well?

Yes he is. And personally, I think that's a joke. His 23 months more than suffices for what he did.
In my jurisdiction, if the feds take the case, they take the case. We drop our end of it 99% of the time, knowing the feds will get a big hunk of jailtime that we wouldn't get otherwise.
The Virginia prosecutor is just piling on because that's easier than having the guts to tell the media that not pursuing state charges is the right thing. So help me, if they usually drop their prosecutions once the feds indict, they're not treating Vick fairly.

I hope not. He deserves to sweat behind bars for awhile.
