He had his best year in 1964 and probably won their MVP then, too.

Well, since he was the AL MVP that year, he was prolly the O's MVP too ;-)

Great series by the way. Props to Boom Boom. (He doesn't get enough credit around here, IMO.)

I especially liked reading about Jim Gentile. I was just a kid then, but I remember him having the most extreme 1B-stretch of anybody. My Dad always said that he was the best 1B-man on a thrown ball that he ever saw... over his head, in the dirt, off to the side... didn't matter, he'd get it... and keep his foot on the bag while he got it. Off the field, he was a flake, which AM's daddy didn't like, so he swapped him even-up for oh-so-boring Norm Siebern... both wore #4 IIRC.

He swapped him for Norm Sieburn. Sieburn batted cleanup but did little to justify it; I think he hit about 7 home runs in 1965 batting fourth. However he did have a tiny part of a great trade.I think the O's traded him to the Giants for some outfielder who was included with Pappas for Frank Robinson.
