I figured I'd start a DS thread since we started talking about it in the Xbox 360 thread. I got one for Christmas and I love the thing. It completely took me by surprise how fun and innovative it is. So far I have:
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
Brain Age
Mario Kart DS
New Super Mario Bros.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (ordered it off Ebay, but haven't played it yet)
What games does everyone else have? And what games would you guys recommend?

I was thinking about getting a portable.
So I ask, DS or PSP?

I've only played the PSP once or twice, but I vote for DS. The thing is amazing and incredibly versatile.

I've heard good things, but it's a really hard game to find. I looked on Ebay and they only had two sellers. I'm going to get it eventually though. Thanks.

I didn't have a problem when I got it about 6 months ago. What about Amazon?

It's not so much finding it as it is finding it for a reasonable price. Amazon isn't selling it directly anymore and the cheapest new one on the marketplace is $49.50. The cheapest used is $33. Ebay is running right around there too.

I've had mine for two years now (I have the old version) and I love it.
Some great games (other than those you listed):
Puzzle Quest (Surprisingly addictive)
Etrian Oddyssey (if you like punishingly difficult old school dungeon crawling RPGs, like I do)
Rune Factory (Great game in the Harvest Moon series)
Advance Wars: Dual Strike (strategy game)
Trauma Center: Under the Knife
Those are just a few. Since Christmas I have logged more time on my DS than my 360 or my Wii, partially due to the availability of televisions here at my parents' house, and partially due to it being awesome.

Oh, that sucks. It must be out of circulation, and that means it's going to become one of those games. It really was quite good, but flew under the radar. Only now does it seem like people are trying to get it which is annoying. Maybe you can luck out.
I got the first 2 Phoenix Wright games and New Super Mario Bros. with my system, but I haven't had a chance to play it yet. I don't know what Hotel Dusk is, but I'll have to look into it.

Same thing happened to me with Etrian Odyssey (which i will continue to plug as long as this thread lives) - I waited forever for the price to drop and then suddenly found it was impossible to find. The best thing to do short of overpaying on Ebay (which is what I had to do) is to periodically drop in on gamestops and check their used game shelves.
In other news - to the OP, since you are a new owner, I will impart a bit of wisdom that I learned back in the day when I was in your shoes. You will probably be very tempted to invest in a screen protector for your DS. I got one and used it for a long time, and started to find the screen hard to see through all of the scratches on the screen protector. So I took it off temporarily (to play a game that did not involve the touch screen), lost it, and have used the DS without it ever since. In about a year of use without the screen protector, my screen has remained entirely unscratched. So don't worry too much about screen protectors, because the screens are built very durably.
Oh and I remembered another great game - Meteos. Love it.

This Amazon review is pretty good to describe it so:
I'll be honest, I didn't really have high hopes for Hotel Dusk: Room 215 from the time I had heard about the game making it's way over here, but thankfully I was pleasently surprised with the results. Taking the point and click genre to different levels on the DS, Hotel Dusk makes you turn your DS sideways to play it, making it look like you're playing an open book instead of a video game. And book is the word to describe this unique game, as Hotel Dusk pays numerous odes to the crime-noir fiction of yesteryear with it's engaging story, colorful characters, and dark and mysterious atmosphere. Hotel Dusk: Room 215 puts you in the shoes of Kyle: a disgraced and grizzled former detective trying to piece together a puzzle surrounding the people staying at Hotel Dusk. There is more to the story, but revealing any more would ruin the surprises that are abound throughout this game, and the intricacy of the game's story is probably the most surprising thing of all. The character designs are wonderfully drawn and utilized, almost looking like an interactive comic book. Also, Hotel Dusk is easy to pick up and play, even for gamers who have never played a point and click type game before. If there's any drawbacks to Hotel Dusk, it's that it's slow pace will be a major turn off for many gamers. While the game is easy to pick up and play, not everyone will stick with it due to it's pacing. Also, on occasion, the game's story does suffer from some typical puzzle and adventure trappings, and does feel linear to a point. Despite all that though, Hotel Dusk: Room 215 is yet another unique and exclusive title for Nintendo's wonderous, dual screened handheld, and if you own a DS, you should definitely check this game out; you'll be pleasently surprised.

I've had mine for about a year and a half now and I can't go anywhere without it. Among the games I've enjoyed lately are, the Mario: March of the Mini's 2, Tretris DS, Final Fantasy III (although I'm totally stuck), and Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. Mario Kart ad Diddy Kong racing are pretty good as well.
That little device rocks.

Ditto that. I love how old video games tend to have a higher level of replay value than new games. I'm of the opinion that super awesome 3d graphics may be the worst thing that ever happened to video games. My most recent piece of evidence, Assassin's Creed. I logged about 4 hours playing this, slipped it back into its case, and have no doubt that it will stay there forever. Looks beautiful, awful controls and terrible game play, IMO.
But back on topic, I love the DS touch screen interface. At first it was kind of awkward to use, but now I love it. I know it has a built in mic as well, but I've never used it outside of Brain Age and a few games were you blow on it to shoot (Princess Peaches Castle, also a great game). Anybody know about any games that make extensive use of the microphone?

Thanks. That actually sounds right up my alley. I'll have to check into it.
I played a little bit of New Super Mario Bros., just like 5 levels, and I like it. Its basically Super Mario World with some tweaks so far. Very nice.
Then I tried out Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. I'm loving this game. I beat the intro case and I'm about to enter court again for the first real case. Its awesome.
So far I love the DS. I can't wait to get some more playing time in. I think I'm going to get addicted.

Yeah, when I first heard about the DS, I was like "this is the perfect opportunity to reinvigorate the point and click genre." I hope some developers jump on it and we get a new golden age of point and click adventure/mystery type games.

That would be sweet. Don't get me wrong, I love me some AAA 360 titles, but the point and click games suit me better.
I just read that they're already coming out with another Ace Attorney game soon. (New lead character.)

I got the original GBA Fire Emblem from my local gamestop as a used game, fired it up, played for about an hour, and then found out that the cartridge was defective and I couldn't save the game. So I haven't been able to work myself up to playing the other Fire Emblems because I'm too pissed off about that one still. Love that kind of game (all the way back to the original Shining Force, which changed my life) though - another great entry in that genre is the Disgaea series for PS2 (and I think they have one for PSP now, which I don't have).

The DS is a lifesaver. I ride the light rail to work, so it's handy to have something to do instead of staring out the window. Of course, it's also plenty fun enough that you'll want to set aside time to play it even when you're not just trying to kill time. It's the only video game system I own, and frankly, the only one I need.
Phoenix Wright is a fun game. I'm working on the final case now; then it's on to PW 2. I've almost beaten Picross (puzzle game) as well.
Has anyone mentioned Elite Beat Agents? That's a pretty addictive one if you like music-related games. Of course, I haven't played it in about a year. I got to the hardest difficulty setting and it kicked my ass, so it's been gathering dust since. I'll come back to it at some point. I think.

The game is simple, but it makes you think. It's all about using logic. And you get to make pretty pictures!
(Okay, that probably wasn't very helpful. I don't quite know how to describe it, though.)

It's the same idea as those puzzles they used to have in Games Magazine back in the day. I am now realizing that I am probably the only one on here who was nerdy enough to get Games Magazine back in the day, so maybe that's not helpful...
Okay, here's another try. The puzzles are called Nonograms, and I believe they are straight out of Japan. Here's the wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonogram.
I have yet to get Picross, but apparently they work extremely well on the system, as does the ability to draw your own grids and have it convert them to send to and challenge other people with.

Those magazines are worth the subscription fees for the Cryptic Crosswords alone. There is no more rewarding feeling than completing one of those things.

You guys are such Noobs. My gray original DS is awesome. When I'm outside, I can't see the screen because of glare, and it holds the charge about half as long as my girlfriend's DS Lite (which is pink, so I can't use it...) Plus, the hand cramps from the tiny tiny stylus are hardcore. Also, I can play GBA games without it sticking out the bottom, so that actually does make it awesome.
Plus, on the light rail, everyone knows I'm rocking it old school, and I didn't just get the thing to play Brain Age. :002_stongue:
Just kidding around. I am so intensely jealous of everyone who has a Lite. Even my mother bought a lite - one of the sexy black and crimson ones (she bought it in a Brain Age 2 bundle, so there you go, I was just making fun of my own mother above).

Just picked up Elite Beat Agents at CC for $9 the other day. I had heard it was good, but wasn't planning on getting it b/c I'm not much for music games. For $9 though... why not? Got to say it's pretty fun, but I suck at it. That's because I never have had and never will have any amount of rhythm.

No problem - I got it for Christmas, and my girlfriend liked it so much she HAD to have her own copy. She just informed me today that her mother, the last person you would expect to ever play a video game, tried it out, and absolutely loved it.
My only problem with the game is that it blatantly cheats. It's a good thing I'm so fricking awesome at the game that I can win anyway.
The Wedge

It so does cheat. Of course, the AI is going to know exactly what's coming anyway, so it always has that advantage.
Doesn't help that I have shaky stylus syndrome and will inadvertantly make an illegal move sometimes.

I've got the same thing - except when I do accidentally make those moves, I blame that on the computer for cheating too. It is easy to get indignant and yell and scream at the DS when it can't yell and scream back.
Baroquen131
01-12-2008, 04:54 PM
Yeah, the developer says it doesn't cheat, but it certainly seems like it. Especially how the "suggested" move almost always benefits the CPU, so I usually try and avoid it whenever possible. I actually liked this better on the PC (played the demo), but the DS version came out so long ago, and I don't usually buy a game twice.
The Wedge

The only time I take the suggested move is when I see it's 4 or 5 that I stupidely missed. That way I know I won't get an immediate screwing.

Yeah - I noticed that about the recommended moves last night.
I played it on XBL and again I liked it there - but the real nice thing about it being on the DS is that you don't lose a whole lot, and you can play it anywhere. I don't know that I would get so much utility out of it if I could only play it when sitting in front of my TV.

Yeah, I have it for XBox Live and, while fun and addicting, I find myself choosing games like Rock Band, Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty 4, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, my DS, TV, reading, etc.. over it. It seems like it would be better on a handheld.

Yeah, its weird. Whenever a game comes out, 99 times out of 100 I can walk right into my GameStop and buy the game the day it comes out. But a couple months ago, when Call of Duty 4 came out, I was in the mall the day it came out so I decided to buy it there. I went to both GameStops in the mall and both were sold out. We had to go to Best Buy after that, and they were sold out too. So on the way home, I stop at the GameStop I usually go to. "Sure, we have plenty of copies".
So I guess my point is, your best bet is usually a GameStop not located at a mall. They must load up on new releases.

After searching for more than 5 hours today, I found it at BJ's WholeSale Club in Pasadena. I hate to buy the bundle pack for $160 but what is 30 bucks more when you search from about 12-5pm...
It came with Cartoon Network Racing and Balls of Fury which I will trade in for "Fish Tycoon" as the woman wants it. Or, if anyone can think of a better game like this I will get that. How's Sim Pets?
I bought MarioKart DS (which I wanted), PW:AA (which the fiancee who HATES video games has been playing it continuously for about 2 hours) and Bust-A-Move (one of my all time faves).
I plan on getting New SMB soon when I can find it. Also, Picicross DS for the woman.
Feels good to finally have one, now I just need to pry it away from her. :D
Anyone have any other games she might dig, and is there any other PW games out there? Anyone have Point Blank?
There are 3 Phoenix Wright games. I just finished the last case of the first last night and got started on the 2nd, Justice For All. The third one is called Trials and Tribulations. And they're coming out with another Ace Attorney game in Spring, but its not centered around Phoenix Wright this time. I hope we get to play as the prosecution for a little change up.
Anyway, congrats on getting a DS.

Just out of curiousity, are you sure you beat the "final" case? There's an extra case that unlocks after the credits roll.
Also, I'm starting to see the puzzle pieces from Puzzle Quest when I close my eyes.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure. After the 4th case, the credits rolled but then a 5th case opened up. The 5th case was the longest by far, seemed like it took me forever to finish. The credits rolled again after that, so unless theres a 6th case (I wouldn't mind) then I think I finished the game. It was a great game. I hope the 2nd one is as good as the first.

Awesome! Yeah, I really hope they release more games like it. I can't say it enough, developers should use the DS to revitalize and revoloutionize the point and click genre.

Haven't played it, but I hear "Touch Detective" is a pretty good point and click game, in the vein of the Monkey Island series or Maniac Mansion/Day of the Tentacle. (oh how I miss Day of the Tentacle...)

In that case I'll have to investigate. The old LucasArt point and click adventures were awesome.
Heck, LucasArts should spend the pithy amount it would take to port those games to the DS.

Seriously... I'd pay 35 bucks for a handheld version of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Speaking of Maniac Mansion, I remember reading about some flash version of the game, or new episodes of the game world or something. However, when I googled it, there were a number of responses, and didn't have time to check them all. But if some of you really liked that game - it's out and about in the world of flash games.

I've been wanting a DS recently and can't find one anywhere. The only store within 10 miles that has them only has the pink one.

Check BJ's WholeSale Club or Costco, both of them said they had them.
I bought Hotel Dusk online last night. Pretty excited to play it.
And my girlfriend bought me some games for my birthday. She got me Pokemon Diamond (I played Blue and Yellow back in the day, I'll probably give this a shot when I'm bored), Dementium (I hadn't heard anything about it, but I'll give it a shot. It looks kind of cool.), and Jenga (I will be returning this in exchange for Picross. She mistook me saying that I thought Jenga is supposed to be one of the worst games of all time... for that I wanted it.)

Hahah, talk about a communication breakdown.
I think you'll really dig Hotel Dusk. It's not flashy or anything, and it's not even really animated much, but the story is cool and the presentation, I feel, really makes good use of the DS.

Anyone as excited as I am about the new Advance Wars coming out in a few days?:002_sdrool:

Yep, I'm looking forward to it. I'm probably going to play it before I really get into the 2nd Phoenix Wright. (I haven't been able to play my DS this week, working over 50 hours in a week sucks.)
And me and my girlfriend had a pretty good laugh after I told her what I really said. Luckily she didn't get upset that I didn't like something she got me. :)

I liked the first one alot, but I haven't played any since. I might look into it.
Finished Hotel Dusk yesterday. Great game. Plenty of twists and turns. Heres hoping more games similar to it come out for the DS.
This isn't about the DS, but I started playing Indigo Prophecy on XBL Arcade and I'm liking it. I'm looking forward to Heavy Rain for 360.

I'm glad you liked it. I hate it when I recommend games to people and they hate them, because it makes me feel like a bad person. :)

Yeah, it was definitely cool. I had a weird dream about it the night before I finished it. I was Kyle Hyde and wandering around Hotel Dusk. They should make a movie out of it.

Yeah, a movie would be awesome. They could get Keanu to play Louie. And some librarian hot woman to play Rachel. Seriously, that was one prettily drawn young woman.
Though I'd hope they wouldn't show the Bradley at the docks flashback as much as the game...

A movie of the game or your dream? :p
For anyone looking to get one, you can trade in your GBA at GameSpot now and get a DS for $99.

The game sold miserably, so that doesn't seem too likely.

The game. :D
Of course it isn't likely, but it would be cool.
And that flashback was a little redundant, I thought they would show more of it each time. But no, same thing over and over.
Also, Louie kept saying "what" instead of "that". I don't know if that was intentional or not.

I wondered about that, too. Either a weird translation error, or an intentional character quirk. Like maybe some guy back in the late 70s early 80s talked like that.
I just got "Professor Layton and the Curious Village" yesterday. Its pretty good. Addicting. Anyone else played it? I've solved 71 puzzles so far.

I will. Though I really don't have the money to putting in to games right now. I'm gonna have to make what I have kinda last for awhile...maybe I can pick one up used or something.

I thought it would be. You can always try to get a used version at Gamestop. Maybe even trade in some games you don't play anymore for some money towards it.
I guess we can be even now, since you got me into Hotel Dusk.

The review I read mentioned that it's (as usual) already a series in Japan, so it's just a matter of translating and such to get sequels over here.
Yeah, but did you have the money for it at the time? ;)
Lets just say I could have used that money elsewhere, but I just had to get that game. :D

Good for you. I just traded mine in to get some money towards Madden '09. I'm looking forward to the sequel.
Another cool thing about the game is that theres a new downloadable puzzle every week. Or at least there was, I don't know if they're still doing that. But that adds even more gameplay.

I want some new games, any suggestions? I pretty much play anything on the DS except for Pokemon style games...
