My BGE bill for the period of 12/10-1/10 is $181.76! This is for a two bedroom apartment where the thermostat is kept at 73 and the heat was off for several days. From 9/15-12/10, almost thrice the amount of time, it was only 1.5 the dollar amount: $283.64.

I'm almost certain the reason it's so high is that in December our heating unit stopped working and for about two days we used emergency heat. Our rental company has a 'satisfaction guaranteed' policy, under which they will refund one day's rent if for any reason one is not satisfied. I was not satisfied. Immediately after the heating unit was replaced I filled out and sent in the requisite form, wherein I requested a break in several days rent for having to sit at home for six hours while the unit was replaced and for the anticipated effect on our electric bill. I also mentioned that our hallway flooded the first time we used the washer, due to a hose being disconnected.

The rental office has yet to respond. I was going to let the matter drop, but this BGE bill has changed that.

Keeping your thermostat at 73 is definitely crazy... When I am in Maryland in the winter we keep it at 66. Here in Isla Vista, where UCSB is, I don't have heat, I could call the gas company to have them turn it on but I am trying to avoid that. Yes, it gets cold enough to need heat in IV, the temperature goes below 40 every night and most days, tops out at around 62-64.

To save heating costs and to reduce my carbon footprint I have invested in Plastic insulation (http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1287694), essentially plastic wrap you put over the windows. It works great as I live in an apartment in the corner of the complex so I have several windows and they are poorly insulated, and I get cross ventilation even when they are closed. Plus I live a few blocks from the ocean, so the wind can be no joke. Since adding the plastic insulation it has been noticably warmer in the apartment.

OK, thanks, I was wondering if I was crazy or not. We keep ours at 68 when we're home. 73 is high for me. We do have a fancy HVAC though that basically runs all day at a really really low speed. So it's a *constant* (and comfortable) 68. No up and down fluctuations.

But yeah, my bill last month was 325, and we'll hit the mid 400's no problem in a cold month. And this is with a top of the line ultra efficient (95%) gas furnace.

I didn't realize 73 was that high. My roommate and I must be cold blooded. I've had it about 70 before and couldn't stop shivering.
