Chris Mortenson just announced it on NFL Live.
Says they disagreed over staffing, specifically whether defensive coordinator Rob Ryan should be fired (Kiffin, yes; Davis, no), and Davis actually wrote up a letter of resignation for him to sign. Kiffin doesn't want to do so (wants to be paid for his contract).
Also suggested Davis wants Dennis Green as coach.
I hope Al Davis lives forever; the world is more interesting with him in it (mostly because I'm not a Raiders fan :p)

ESPN really values brevity, apparently.
Raiders owner Al Davis sent a letter to Lane Kiffin recently asking for the coach to resign, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports.
Kiffin has refused to resign, he told Mortensen.
The Raiders finished 4-12 in Kiffin's first season as coach.
Chris Mortensen covers the NFL for ESPN.
That's the ENTIRE story. ;)

The Raiders will never be good while Davis is the owner much like the Orioles will never be good while Angelos is the owner.
Well he's not going to resign, so Al better fire him if he wants him out.

Did Davis honestly think that would work?

Did Davis honestly think that would work?
Well, when the voices want to be, they are VERY persuasive.

Raiders are denying...

Of course, that’s what the team said a year ago, when [Adam] Schefter reported that head coach Art Shell was getting the shoe and the team called Schefter a “false rumor monger.”
Even the Orioles aren't this dysfunctional. At least not anymore.

Davis is the reason I never liked the Raiders. Well, maybe when the Snake was still there.
