"I received a call from Seattle saying that is no more playing for me and I can't do anything about that,'' Jones said. "I leave tomorrow morning...It sucks. I want to play. This is Game 4 of the finals and I really want to be there for my team, but it's something that all the guys understand. I really want to play, but I can't."

On the actual deal itself: "(Bill Bavasi) called me yesterday and told me the news. I've got to go to Baltimore tomorrow morning and handle things there. I'm the centerpiece of the deal on the Mariners side. It's an honor to get traded for such a highly talented pitcher as Bedard is. He's one of the best. Last year he finished up as an arguably one of the top candidates for the Cy Young. He's that good, so for me it's an honor. You know, I like Seattle, but if I am in Baltimore, as I think now I am, I'm going to embrace it and have the best time of my life in Major League Baseball.''

This could be a very big deal for us.

Report:Mariners to acquire Bedard for Jones

Adam Jones is flying to Baltimore for a physical on Monday, suggesting the Orioles and Mariners have agreed to an Erik Bedard trade.
Jones said he's been told the deal is done, though he doesn't know who is going with him to Baltimore. Asked by the Seattle Times tonight, George Sherrill said he had heard nothing to suggest he's being included. Jan. 27 - 7:27 pm et

If Sherrill hasnt been told of a trade than I hope that means we get Triunfel or Clement along with Tillman.

BTW, judging by his quote about Bedard, it sounds like Adam Jones really knows a thing or two about what's going on around the major leagues. As opposed to a certain recent acquisition who wasn't aware the O's are in the same division as the Yankees and Red Sox... ;)

Most likely soon. I get the feeling there is a deal in place for him depending on who we get back from Seattle. i.e. We got Jones, so don't need Pie, but Murton would be a great trade chip (Towers is on speed dial). SD has the 2B prospect we could use to replace BRob, so if that happens we don't need EPat back. Lots of dominoes to start falling.

I just hope guys like Roberts and Millar get dealt to great teams and have a shot at competing this year. (and we absolutely plunder any team we deal them to)

I know what you mean, but feel good about the fact that you just acquired one of the best pitchers in the game. Don't think '07 was just a fluke - we saw flashes of brilliance in '05 and '06 as well.

That's part of the reason it's so important to have a strong minor league system. For the M's, Bedard just may be the difference between sitting at home in October and winning the pennant.

BB dropped a nugget that it is a 4-1, so we have that going for us. Lets just hope we get 2 of Tillman/Triunfel/Wlad/Clement/Morrow, IMO that is what makes it a great deal for us as opposed to a good one.

In Safeco he will be unreal.

You will love to watch him pitch. His stuff is unreal. Every time he pitches you have to wonder if he is going to pitch a no hitter.

Trust me when I say you will not be disappointed!

From Seattle Times Blog:

UPDATE (4:47 p.m.): I just spoke to Mariners spokesman Tim Hevley, who confirmed Jones has been called back to the U.S. Hevley said he could not comment further, which more or less tells more or less tells us Jones is being traded because major league clubs do not stiff winter league teams as badly as Seattle just did without a darned good reason. If Jones was hurt, the M's would say so. Anyway, Jones himself is saying what the M's won't. The winter league team's manager, none other than Luis Sojo, has also confirmed Jones if off to Baltimore for a physical.

Yeah but we have the best C prospect in the majors coming up, so he's not really a need for us either, unless we have somewhere else to deal him.

The O's trade of Bedard would signal a major rebuilding process in which a trade of second baseman Brian Roberts would likely follow. You guys are NOT getting Pie LOL! Or Marmol LOL! You wouldn't get both of those in a deal for Bedard AND Roberts. A package around Gallagher, Murton, Cedeno, and Marshall is what you'll get. Maybe other prospects like Patterson or Colvin included but I highly doubt it.

You might be right. However, we're hoping the Mariner fans are going to find out very soon that they are giving up more than they would have thought possible. Never say never. The same could happen to you.

I haven't heard this ... Jones is supposed to be Torri Hunter.

There are quotes from scouts saying that Pie is "the best I've ever seen." And I recall one saying "he's a gold glover out there right now" when he was just 19.

Honestly I am very happy with the idea of Scott in LF. Obviously I want the best players available, but if the Cubs deal with Pie or without Pie are roughly the same, I am fine going without Pie.

If he's simply "overrated defensively" that would make him Torii Hunter.

I'm not over valueing our prospects. The fact is we are not giving you are most prized prospect and our best pitchign prospect for Brian Roberts. It just isnt happening lol. I can see Hill and Pie with a lot more for Bedard and Roberts. But Marmol and Pie and more for bedard and roberts wouldnt happen. Marmol's value is ridiculously high right now, almost as much as bedard's. He is one of the best RPs in baseball. Bedard is worth A LOT more than Roberts. You guys will get something like Gallagher, Marshall, Cedeno, and Murton for Roberts and Payton. The reason that this didn't happen yet is because you wanted to see what you'd get from the Mariners for Bedard. Now that you have Jones you wont demand Pie. And say you only get 1 SP back from them, then you guys would want 2 from us, etc....

I personally really like Kyler Burke, but he would have to be the 3rd or 4th piece in a deal for roberts, and not sure it would go to 4 players without us tossing in a player, but i think he is an awesome, young, under rated player.

To be fair, you stated that someone said he "was the best ever in CF". You can't throw quotes like that around without a decent source. SportsGuy is basically quoting out of the Baseball America 2007 handbook. I've read that both guys are excellent CF's. You assumed that Pie is the better CF. Why?

That is exactly what you are doing my friend. Marmol is completely unproven and you guys won't even name him your closer now, so how is he one of the best in the league? No one said Pie and Marmol anyway, I even think thats too much for Roberts, but I do think Pie and Gallagher is possible. Gallagher is more expendable to you than Marmol. Even though, Wood will end up as your closer and Marmol will be the set-up man, which diminishes his value.

This time they just declined to comment though, which is different than what they've been saying all offseason. Anytime there was a Roberts or Bedard rumor over the past couple months, it was almost immediately denied by MacPhail and co. Like, immediately. Now all of a sudden, it's "no comment". You have your take on our prospects and so do I. I want a fair trade for both of us as the next guy. I would love to trade Pie, Hill, Gallagher, Cedeno, Murton, Patterson, and Dempster for Bedard and Roberts but that just didn't happen. But if you guys offered us Roberts for Marmol I would hope to God that Hendry would reject that deal. Marmol is our most valuable player right now in my opinion. He could be our #2 starter next year if Piniella wanted to be creative. Pie is SUPPOSED to be a stud, but I have seen absolutely nothing from him at the major league level besides his awesome defense. But still, Hendry has a man crush on him and he is not goin anywhere for 2 years of Roberts. We have been drooling over Pie for like 4 years now, there's no way we trade him for a 2B for two years when we already have a good 2B. Take any combination of Gallagher, Marshall, Cedeno, Murton, Patterson, Veal, Dempster, Marquis. Take them ALL! But I see us giving you Gallagher, Murton, Cedeno, and maybe Marshall for Roberts and maybe Payton.

You do know he hasn't gotten any consistent playing time yet, right?

You do know he picked up baseball at age 16, and is 22 right now.

You do know that at every level, he has dominated, offensivley and defensively, winning a championship at each level.

I'd hate to see him traded...

Fontenot is not a bad player and if you want Murton, Gallagher, and Fontenot we'll give it to you. Id rather give you those 3 than Pie alone. And all you guys want Murton over Marshall..... OK lets do it. The Cubs would MUCH rather give up Murton than Marshall.
