:And no I'm not talking about Clay Buchholz.

It was August 11th 1991 and White Sox pitcher was making his 2nd career start. His name Wilson Alvarez. This was a pitcher who's only other start came 2 years prior in another teams uniform. In that start he didn't even get out of the first allowing 3runs on 3 hits, 2hr's, and 2 walks. He also had control issues in the minors walking a lot of batters. So nothing on this warm summer day would have made you think you would witness history. Now this wasn't a 'perfect' game, nothing close to it, as Alvarez did walk 5 batters-striking out 7-over 9 innings but never allowed a hit. On the mound for the O's was Dave Johnson-who only laste 1 1/3 giving up 4 runs on 8 hits. Maybe this helped Alvarez settle in? Then Todd Frohwirth came in to pitch 4 innings, Jim Poole had 2.2/3rds, and Gregg Olson pitched the 9th.

I was thinking about this and didn't realize that this was also Alvarez's 2nd start until this morning.

Anyone care to find out how many times a guy in his 2nd start has pitched a no-no? And if any other team has had 2 guys do this to them?

I don't remember the details now, but I seem to recall a play being ruled an error that I thought should have been, or at least could have been, called a hit. Can't remember the details now though.

In one of life's weird intricacies, I actually remember a snippet of the pre-game show from that day. I remember the radio announcer (not sure if it was Miller or Chuck Thompson) described Alvarez as a guy who could "throw a strawberry through the side of a battleship." Then I promptly saw (and listened to) my first no-hitter.

17 years later, why do I remember a completely meaningless comment I heard when I was 10 years old?

It was probably this one:

"...With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Ripken bounced a dribbler in front of the plate and reached safely when Karkovice’s throw went astray. The official scorer immediately ruled an error on the play, and instant replay confirmed that an on-target toss would have beaten the Iron Man to the bag..."

I was at that game, and did a complete look back at it here:
