Just because the team defense sucked doesn't mean all of the individuals suck, especially a safety.

Why do you say he's not that great?? I read reports that he indicate is quite a good coverage defender who can also double as a corner. Vikes need better cover types, so while this may be a lot of money, I have no issues with it. He is also a known quantity to the Vikes DC (Frazier). Besides, you don't have to be "great" any more to make this type of coin in the NFL.
Vikes still need a D-end, a WR, and someone to give TJack some earnest competition.

Relax NJ....source for all of your FA signing reports? In an earlier email you alluded to better sources than you have.
Just curious.
Berrian is going to be VERY expensive. Will be a real signal if the Vikes outbid everyone for hiom that the new owner means business.
Smith does not sound like anything special....

Well I look on profootballtalk.com for the info.
As for the Berrian thing, Ziggy Wilf fueled up his private jet at 3:00 am to go get Berrian in California and bring him to Minnesota. Wilf has extended the funding to the FO to get deals done that will help the team get to the Super Bowl this year. Berrian apparently is impressed enough with the Vikings full-court press that he is expected to sign before he leaves Minnesota.
Justin Smith also played for Leslie Frazier's D in Cincinnati. He is a very good pass-rusher but his stock is down a little coming off a bad year. But make no mistake that he is very good still.
After we wrap up Berrian, Smith along with Williams and Tapeh, we need to come to a meeting of minds with Heath Farwell. Can't really afford to lose him. I'd also like to retain Mewelde Moore but I'd understand if he leaves for more PT.
I'd like to see us take a flier on Billy Volek who could challenge Tavaris Jackson and at very least be a solid backup. But really nothing of note at QB that is definately better than Tavaris.
I like a receiving corps of Berrian, Wade and Rice and Andre Allison but we need to add another guy and maybe a veteran presence, perhaps Isaac Bruce. Could also use a dependable tight end, maybe Eric Johnson from the Saints or Ben Troupe who I've always thought has great talent but never "put it together". Also need more defensive depth and a right tackle.
I would look to the 2nd wave in free agency to add some depth and sit back until the draft and in the first round grab the guy that can make an immediate impact. If we fill most of our needs through free agency, I would just as soon see us take a right tackle at #17 and take a wide receiver in the 2nd round who can return kicks. In the 3rd round maybe take a developmental QB with huge upside, like the kid from Delaware if he would fall to 3rd round.

I heard DJ Hackett signed with the Redskins on NFL Network last night too.
Lot of stuff happening around the league. I can't believe Cleo Lemon got a deal like that. Not much since it's not guaranteed, but still. I guess his stock went up when he beat the Ravens last year!
It'll be interesting to see how Porter plays in JAX.
And if the Vikes get Berrian, they could be pretty good. Tavaris Jackson really needs a go to guy in MIN.

He hasn't signed with them yet. They've re-signed Todd Collins, but other than that, they haven't done anything else in FA at the moment. I'm sure you heard that speculated on NFL network because it makes sense as far as the Seattle connection with Hackett and Zorn.

I'd like that signing. I keep hoping that they will steer clear of the 2 categories of WRs that they currently like.
1) Over-priced
2) Over-aged

New England really amazes me. Noone plays the FA game better. They constantly get players to sign for below market deals. To get Moss for only $5m more guaranteed than Jax had to pony up for Joey Porter is amazing.

Well you're guaranteed a playoff berth and a shot at a ring in NE. While Jacksonville gets to the playoffs a lot, its not as sure of a thing as playing on the Patriots.
If anything Im suprised we don't see more top players(or at least ones that lack the Super Bowl Title) take "pay cuts" to play for NE.

They have a roster full of players who take less. Those who don't, no matter how good they are get let go. I'm just happy my team has a completely different approach - build from within - and doesn't have to compete w/NE for FAs.

It looks like my Vikes are very "in on" the two Javon's in the 2nd phase of FA, Javon Walker and Javon Kearse. Neither are what they once were but they are good veterans to be a very productive part of the position rotation.

The Vikings are going for it, I like it. I like seeing teams do as much as they can to make a serious run. If they get those guys, I think they could be a QB away.
I'm not much of a Vikings fan, but I like what they're doing.

Yeah, kind of suck that Walker went to Oakland but 6 years, $55 million? Who would have anticipated that? I know only $16 million is guaranteed but come on.
Kearse is in Tennessee today and if they let him leave he'll be in Minnesota on Thursday for a visit.
The Vikes signed Maurice Hicks to be a 3rd down back and kick returner and ST player to replace Mewelde Moore. Good solid signing.
Biggest needs still for the Vikings are:
Right Tackle
Another starting Wide Receiver to push Rice to 3rd and Wade to 4th.
Better Tight End that Shiancoe but unlikely to find that
Two pass rushing defensive ends
one more linebacker for 2nd team depth
defensive backfield depth
Veteran backup QB who can still start.
They will not get a starting NFL QB who is any better than Tavaris Jackson. Maybe someone to compete with him like Trent Green or Daunte (unlikely) or Losman or maybe Pennington becomes available. Drafting a developmental QB might be good if someone with good skills falls to 2nd or 3rd round.
1st round through 2nd round has to be a Defensive End, Wide Receiver or Offensive Right Tackle if those positions can't be solved through the remainder of free agency. Getting Kearse and a #2 Wide Receiver in free agency would open up a lot of options for the Vikings.
I guess if I could have a wish list of how to finish off Free Agency I would do the following:
Resign LB/ST Heath Farwell and DE Darrion Scott
Sign Javon Kearse
Sign D.J. Hackett
Sign Eric Johnson
Sign Trent Green, Daunte Culpepper or Quinn Gray to a small contract. I would sign whoever would take the smallest contract of those three.
Then go into the draft taking either the best DE or OT. I might lean to OT (Otah) and then take a DE in the 2nd round.
