I am so aggravated at hearing HOW BAD the Orioles are going to be this year. If you so called fans are so down on this team, then JUST go find another team and support them!!!!

I have supported this team since 1963. Win or LOSE I love my O's and Baby O's in the minor's. I don't whine if in spring training a player is not performing to what a so called expert says they should be doing.

I just hope and pray they have a good game and one day soon they will compete as they once did!

I am done now,
so all of you that think you know more..........please feel free to tell me why I am wrong to think the way I do.

With a bunch of questionable players out on the field it's without a doubt that a lot of people are looking onwards to next year. If you hope for the worst you'll be pleasantly surprised if a better outcome happens.

Myself? I swear up and down the team will be better than last years. But I don't see another winning season until 2010, maybe 2009.

I started w/them in 1958. It was easy to root for them in those days because they had a wonderful owner and one of the best front offices and organizations in Baseball. You knew they would make sound moves, so you didn't worry too much if the team had an off year.

Now it's different, and it's understandable why people get angry or disillusioned with the team. They have a terrible owner and, until MacPhail came along, one of the worst front offices. Until recently, they had one of the worst minor league systems.

That's like saying that when people criticize the government, if they don't love America they should just leave. That's ridiculous.

We all support this team. That's why were are here on this message board (except for the Cubs fans who are here for the Roberts trade). Nothing wrong with being realistic about our expectations for this year, and that we as fans have patience in what the front office is trying to do in rebuilding depth in the farm system. Being realistic leads to more rational and less impulsive decisions, correct?

Might this be called a "rant"?

There is a forum for rants you know! :)

We aren't going to open the can of worms again that is "what are real fans", are we?

Well, I guess I need to shut my mouth and not address my feelings and just watch the games and what happens , happens. Or, if I do I will try from now on to place a comment in the CORRECT place.

Sorry if I hit a nerve!

Two different things there. Don't assume one means the other.

One, the team will be bad. That's a fact. Bad, bad, bad. Maybe, maybe, maybe win a game or two more than last year. But guess what? That's still bad.

The second thing. This board is overwhelmingly optimistic. MacPhail coming in. The trades, the international scouting, the signing of a Boras-controlled draft pick, the stockpiling of young arms: we're all, for the first time in a long time, quite upbeat about this team and where it's headed.

That all said, keep posting your thoughts. That's why we're here. You're obviously a long-time fan from the days of Jim Gentile and Hoyt Wilhelm, and we need to hear from people who have that sort of deep history.

There's a difference between being down on the team and being realistic. And either way you can still support the team.

The national media say the Orioles are going to be bad this year.
Certain members of this board are extremely critical of the team.
In other news, the sun came up again today...
Call me when you've got something newsworthy.

Many a poster has made a thread like this since I've been apart of Orioles Hangout. I suppose there's a reason for that--it can be head scratching for O's fans to be so "down" on the team. But there's a big difference between being "down" on the team and being realistic with your expectations. I'll sleep, eat, breathe and walk Orioles this year, as I do every year. I'll root for them very hard every game, as I do every year. But I don't expect them to have a winning season. What's wrong with that?

While I can see where you're coming from, and appreciate your enthusiasm (it actually makes me a little pumped up), you have to be able to accept that some fan's can think more objectively than others. This time of year, a lot of fans are very optimistic, especially this year under AM. However, that optimism is now focused on our long term direction rather than our immediate expected results. To me it's almost more promising to have a direction for once than it is to think we may have a shot after spending aimlessly for no good reason.

Just another poster who wants to tell other fans what to say or think.

To each his own. I'm looking forward to the season even if the team does stink, which I'm not saying they will, but it certainly looks like a strong possibility.

I'm tired of overly optimistic fans (and sometimes unrealistic) acting as though they are better fans.

I have always resented when people lecture us on what a "real fan" should believe or say or do. No one owns the copyright on that term. The fact that so many people still bother to discuss a team after ten straight losing seasons says a lot about how invested they are in the team's fortunes.

In a poll I conducted recently here, over ninety percent of those that responded expect another losing season. That's a realistic expectation. However, more fans are willing to accept that we will take our lumps this year, if there is a payoff down the road with some of the players we're getting back in these trades.

I'm from Catonsville. I grew up a mere matter of feet from the city line. I consider myself a tried and true Baltimorean until the day I die. There's NO CHANCE I would ever root for another team in my lifetime.

I think the O's will be bad this year but I think they're headed in the right direction, for once.

Just curious how's it been going doing it that way ? I might try it if you're really, truly satisfied with the results.

Ah yes, another fandom relativist. I guess you're all for female circumcision because that's their culture and believe that country clubbers who read the paper during the O's game are equally good fans as the die hards who actually know the players and cheer during the game.

You liberals disgust me!

What do political views have to do with how someone cheers for their team? Why do you assume that you're a "better fan" than a country clubber? I hate when people try to rate their fandom, does it make you feel better to be a bigger fan.

So, let me get this straight... if you think there's a good reason to sacrifice some wins this year for a strong foundation in the future you're the equivalent of a way-off-the-edge-of-the-galaxy wacko extremist moral relativist who believes that anyone should be allowed to do anything no matter how disgusting.

Oh yea, I can see that. Trade Bedard and Roberts, get in bed with Charles Manson. Sure.

This gets the award for strangest post of the year.

Yea note to self, don't post when hungover and MD's losing.

Here was my intention, RZNJ was making the point that we shouldn't be having this "what makes a good fan" debate, to each his own. I was trying to humorously draw the parallel from that line of argument to cultural relativism. There is no right or wrong way to be a fan as there is no way for us to judge another's culture. The most common case brought up in response to cultural relativism is female circumcision in Africa because it's so horrific. Typically cultural relativists are very liberal hippies. In a roundabout way I was trying to call RZNJ a liberal for saying that we shouldn't judge another's fandom, which is of course, ridiculous.

I have failed in the simple task which I brought upon myself, and for that, I apologize to everyone.

Taters, I'm sorry to say, but if there was an award for the least effective use of hyperbole, this would win.

What if I had explained the parallel better in my initial post? I think the potential for humor was certainly there, the failure was in my execution. Thoughts?

I am so aggravated .

Maybe not enough fiber in your diet. If you are aggravated now, I wouldn't even watch this year.

As opening day becomes closer to reality, I become more exited about the upcoming season as I do every year. It doesn't matter to me during spring training where the team is projected to finish, that is for another day. Now I just relish each bit of news about the players, coaches, the ST games. I consider myself a fan. I've always supposed most who post here are fans as well. Why else would someone spend time reading about the O's.
Although I would love for the O's to win a pennant, and always hope they will. It's the game, and my team that has kept me loyal for over 35 years.
I will watch most games this year, and win or loose I will be glad I was here to watch, and hopefully for years to come.
