On MASN right now, it's the O's-Rangers game from May 2, 1988. Coming home after a road trip with a 1-23 record, the O's see 50,000 show up at Memorial Stadium to tell the team they still love 'em.
Pretty cool to see Pete Stanicek, Bill Ripken, Cal, Craig Worthington, Eddie... Right now the crowd is up, chanting Edd-ie, Edd-ie... Joe Angel and Jon Miller announcing. Great stuff.
Hard to believe it's 20 years ago. Amazing how many great memories of a team that was so, so bad.
Thanks! It's nice to hear Jon Miller as well.
Ahhh, a palm ball reference. Don't hear that too much any more...

Man, I'm watching this too...How cool is this?
The only thing that would get 50k at the Yard now is a Red Sox game.

The Orioles were coming off a 6th place finish and had little hope to do any better than the year before.
Six games into a winless season, buoyed by a new manager, the Orioles proceeded to lose another fifteen games
Fast forward 20 years and the Orioles are reeling... ;)

Anybody who thinks Cal was just a big guy at short who's bat carried his glove should be watching this game. There was a play in the 2nd or 3rd inning where he went 3-4 steps to the first base side of second, fielded a grounder, spun, and threw the batter out at first (although the ump called him safe). He was standing behind Bill Ripken when he threw the ball, and I don't think he was even shifted before the play - he was just playing normal short. It was astounding.

IIRC, this was also the night that the Camden Yards complex was annouced as being approved.
I wasn't there but I watched on tv. Made me proud to be an O's fan in a way....and we bounced back pretty well the next year.

I remember that game well....That is my birthday.
When the Orioles came home from their road trip before that home series, i went to the airport to greet them. I was just about to run 9 years old.
My dad and I made a big sign...Ended up getting my picture in the Washington Post holding that sign. It was like the greatest thing ever at that time.

A lot of great old names in this game...Ruben Sierra is up right now and Jay Tibbs is schooling him.
Ruben Sierra was hailed as the next Clemente. Not sure why his career went downhill like it did, but he was fun to watch in the late 80's and early 90's.
Whoa, here's Oddibe McDowell.

Sierra went downhill because at 21 he had the plate discipline of a 21-year-old. At 37 he still had the plate discipline of a 21-year-old. He had a ton of talent, but in 20 years he couldn't figure out how to lay off a pitch out of the zone.

Yeah, I looked at his stats last night, his on base percentage and bb/k ratio wasn't spectacular at all.
He truly did post some awful OBP years in his career. Like, sub .300.
