View Full Version : Opening Day with the Hangout

DrLev
03-26-2008, 01:56 PM
There are quite a few Hangouters attending Opening Day this year (judging from SilentJames' thread), and while several have made plans to meet up somewhere (generally Pickles), I think it would be a good plan to unofficially "officially" announce a general meet up time and place for any Hangouters interested in such an endeavor. Any takers? Any suggestions?

For reference, The Lady and I will be in 72, row PP.

UPDATE:

Pickles at about noon seems to be the consensus. People who've come in the past will probably recognize each other. Some people have already declared what they'll be wearing (I'll probably be wearing my Markakis jersey with the "44" on the sleeve and a 1966 cartoon bird cap). Some people have their photos in their profile, so I'm sure people will run into other Hangouters. We'll probably be the ones chattering intelligently about baseball. :)

Well I asked this in the other OD thread....but I'm sure the game will be close to a sell-out....but I feel like I could get 4-6 tickets if I go down there that day and go to the ticket window and get them.

What do you guys think?

The Wedge
03-26-2008, 04:29 PM
You know what's funny. I bought my tickets earlier today, then as I got in my car to drive home I heard a commercial for season ticket packages and they were like "the only way to get Opening Day tickets is to get in on the Early Bird packages, they aren't available on a single game basis!"

So what the heck did I just pay for, eh? Sure looks like Monday's game to me.

I can be there whenever. I will be near by, probably walking distance. I do have to pick up my tix at player will call though, which I have heard is close to 1 p.m. for a 3 p.m. game.

I don't have a pic up yet, though not hard to miss. I will be the one looking around aimlessly.

I envy you all. I am missing yet another Opening Day being down south for school. I was able to make it to the 2 during my last 2 years of HS. I would just leave school early for it. I can't wait to come home around May 4 for some games over the summer, and I would love to get together with some hangouters for a beer before some games; however, I have to wait till mid July before I can purchase one haha.

I feel you. I've missed a ton of Opening Days the past few years just because of work. And this year I thought I'd be in PA for a training school of sorts, but that fell through. Then I was asked to work the 5-35 signing event this weekend, and I was quick to ask "sure, but I'll take Monday off in exchange" and blam, The Wedge has returned to Opening Day! (huge pop)

By the way, Mrs Expecting Wedge and I will be in section 372 RU, row D, seats 14-15.

And here's an interesting question. Right after I bought these tickets, I heard a season ticket commercial. Only way you can get OD tickets is to buy the early bird plan, fans, because they aren't available on a single game basis! Really? What the heck did I just buy...date says the Mon 31st, 305 start time...CONUNDRUM!

Either they backed off that recently due to lower than expected interest, or they just flat out lie to get people to buy in to season ticket packages.

That is also when I heard the odiferous commercial. I mean, I know that's what they used to do, and then day of they'd open up for walk ups and you might get lucky and what not, but believe me, out of curiousity I hit "best seat available" and there were still some nice ones very much open to the public.

I remember when he first joined he was Rocky Mavia. I even remember when he was first starting to get big. He was in the Nation of Domination and the leader of that group was Farooq (sp). And the Rock gave him a present which was a giant self portrait. After that things just took off. If the Brahma Bull ever came back I might have to go back to watching wrestling.

No worries Dave because you wont even really be able to get into Pickels it will be so packed......they have beer stands out front and a street party...

Hope it gets up in the 50's that will make the beer go down much better. It was freaking cold standing out there last year however the strippers hanging out of the windows at sliders made it worth it! LOL

Hey, if the Red Sox were in town, we'd all be able to find each other with no problem. "We'll be the Orioles fans at Pickles!"

Last season when the Sox were in town, I was hanging around the Pickles/Sliders area, and a little girl noticed me and remarked to her father (Red Sox fan), "Daddy! Look, an Orioles fan!"

No kidding.

My buddy and I are coming in and while Pickles sounds fun, I don't know if you can beat the $1 Natty Boh's that Camden Pub offers all day every day.

Alrighty, kiddies...

Where are we meeting for BEERS tomorrow and when? Perhaps we should pick a particular place b/c "Pickles" or "Sliders" is pretty vague and there are gonna be a few patrons there, from what I understand and remember from last year...

So do we want to be more specific at all? I'll be wearing my cartoon bird hat and new Adam Jones jersey with my girlfriend. (Profile picture minus the dog)

I'm not sure. I park at the Penn Street garage which is right off Pratt Street by the UM Hospital. It's like $7.

I'll be coming from down south, from the light rail.

I'll have a 60s style cartoon bird hat. Depending on the whether, I don't know what else. Maybe my official 02 season pullover warmup. Or maybe just rain gear. :)

We should definitely try to find a good meet up place, though, one that makes it pretty clear that most people are OHers. Hard otherwise to put faces to handles.

We could pick a specific corner of the Sliders/Pickles block. Yeah, that it's going to be busy is the problem here...

At any rate, noon seems to be when most people are planning on being there.

And in terms of an update, I'll be wearing my Markakis home jersey with a '44' on the sleeve, 60's-style cartoon bird cap, and probably an Orioles pullover rain jacket either over everything or tied around my waist. I'll be with the lovely soon-to-be-missus, who will also be decked out in O's attire TBA.

Find it hard to believe we got scanned on a MASN crowd shot. Maybe it was the other pregnant O's fan... she looked about ready to deliver. Though maybe it was us in our seats... the cameras found the section later - they almost awarded Fan of the Game to the girl who's mom bought her beer during the game. (Now there's bonding, right?) Pedro did have his make-shift jersey on. But he never wandered as far over as section 318. And on the way out, Wedge, I had my coat on over my t-shirt.

Either way, it was a hell of a time from way up in Section 374!

Not too bad in 372, either.

And someone else had the exact same duct tape Jones over Tejada idea.

Was anyone at Pickles under the 98rock banner on the awning? I was there for a little bit

I was at Camden Pub. They didn't have their Natty Boh special today, though.

Because of the awesomocity of the MTA, I got to the park in enough time to get to see the opening festivities...so I never even made it out to the bars. Though I would have hated it. As I rose the escalator up and looked out over to them, I saw how madhouse they were, that's not my scene at all. I get the yips real bad around that sort of thing for some reason.

Yeah, I heard that. Some of my friends headed there for the Natty Bohs and were disappointed.

My Opening Day thoughts:

1) I think it's dumb that the larger video screen is used primarily to simply show the lineups and stats. Use that screen for replays and whatnot!

2) Given the weather, I was actually pleased with how many people were there.

3) Beer there is expensive.

4) Again, I was probably the most vocal person in my secion, often yelling out things and getting a few laughs here and there.

5) I got to downtown around 130 pm and most of the garages were already full. I ended up having to park at the Hyatt and walk all the way over to Camden Pub.

BTW, sorry I couldn't meet up with anyone, but I got there later than I thought and parking was a hassle. I barely had time to eat lunch at Camden Pub before I had to enter the Yard.

Yeah, the grand OH Opening Day Meet and Greet didn't quite happen... guess everyone will just have to clear some Saturday night time for the first Hangout Night.

Pretty much my thoughts.

I wanted to meet everyone, but Pickles/Sliders was just insane. I was too busy fighting my way into the pub ordering me and my girl two Crown & Cokes/Miller Lites a piece. It was literally insane.

Good times though.
